- (HD) EMD Diesel in Hungary hauls a railfan charter from Debrecen to Karcag. The F like EMD was one of 20 built by Nydqvist och Holm Aktiebolag (NOHAB) of Sweden in 1963/1964 using GM parts and power plants. They were well respected by Hungarian railroaders.
Today 3 M61's are preserved by NOHAB/GM Foundation, a Hungary rail preservation group dedicated to the preservation of the Class 61 EMD's. May 2017.
As stated above, the M61 was a GM design built under licence by NOHAB in Sweden. It is also found in Norway as Class Di3, Denmark as three types MV, MX and MY, Belgium as Classes 52, 53 and 54, Luxembourg as Class 1600. A total of six M61s are still operational in Hungary out of the original 20 locos. Hungarian operator Karpat Vasut has also bought two MYs from Denmark.
Vic, thanks for the info.
nothing like the sound of an emd567 - brings back memories as a kid living near the rail line, NSW Australia
John, couldn't agree more. I used to see the EMD E units as a kid, with two 567's in each locomotive!
I used to have a newspaper route which ended near a Boston and Maine Railroad yard. It was neat to watch their old Bluebird GP9s switch the yard.
Eventually I joined the railroad and became an engineer. This gave me many opportunities to run early 567 powered locomotives before they were all retired from main line service.
Those are beautiful locos. The DSB had similar ones built by NOHAB-ABB when I visited Denmark.
James, I agree, they are beautiful locomotives. The paint scheme reminds me of the Texas Special American streamliner.
Is it a skill or an addiction if I can tell from just sound with 80% accuracy what notch the throttle is in?
