R1200RT Final Drive Boot Grease

- Some R1200RT riders complain about rust on the driveshaft and the final drive splines. Keeping those splines greased is important, but as important is greasing the rubber boot which keeps water out of the area. The rubber boot itself is not enough, the edges need to be sealed with grease or else water can be driven into the area of the driveshaft.

BMW RSD clearly says, that Staburags NBU 30 PTM must be used to seal boot. But You're right - this place is important and must be sealed with special waterproof grease. I saw many videos on YT where people don't apply any grease at all - that's absolutely not acceptable.
My 2018 R1200RT has been dealer serviced throughout its life and recently, at 42K miles, had the drive shaft and final drive replaced at BMW expense as part of their programme of examination. The drive shaft had corroded so much at the final drive input they couldn't remove it without destroying the final drive itself.
I hope the BMW technicians at my dealership see this and learn something.
Wow, that's awful. Often I see that dealers don't pay attention to small details like this which would prevent a catastrophe like you describe. I mean, if you are fording streams with your bike like a GS out in the wilderness, then you'll get water in there no matter what. But for those of us riding on the road we shouldn't have rain or a wash rusting out the driveshaft.
Thanks John! Good tip!
Thank you for this tipp!
Thank you
nice 1
good attention to details with waterproof grease, alumunium complex grease or polyurea grease?
combine moly assembly paste and grease is awesome
I believe the Bel Ray product is an aluminum complex grease.
@@tinderboxarts that very good water proof grease
Did you feel that the lithium grease wasn't sealing well enough - perhaps during very inclement weather?
The lithium grease was working, as evidenced by my clean driveshaft despite plenty of rides through heavy rain. However, I had two issues with it. One, the white lithium tended to get over the outside of the boot and be difficult to clean off. Two, it doesn't have a lot of "body" to it so it did tend to wash inward under pressure over time. I think the Bel Ray grease will be more resistant to wash out, it's easier to wipe clean, and it's a grease I use elsewhere on the bike anyway. We'll see at my next service how it does.
@@tinderboxarts Great info, thanks!
I have a 2011 1200RT and looking for a shop manual. I need to remove my gear box to repair the casing around the drain plug. Any suggestions on where to find a shop manual?
There is a Haynes Manual, but it might be difficult to find now. I don't know if BMW will sell you a manual directly, but I have seen pirated copies on the interweb. Probably ebay is your best source now.
