  • Starting in wrestling and going to BJJ can be tough because the techniques are similar but different. In this video Nick 'Chewy' Albin takes you through the moves, adaptations and mindset shifts you need to make to have a successful transition from one grappling sport to another!
Check out the episode I did with Chewy on The Strenuous Life Podcast here: www.grapplearts.com/chewjitsu/

Funny I find myself telling these same things when wrestlers show up and want to do submission grappling. The one I found the hardest though (since I was also a wrestler) was the fact people go to their backs willingly that is a total mind freak for a wrestler.

While this is true. But as an 11 year wrestler who gets FRUSTRATED at all the gi grabbing. I do respect it and am humbled because i stepped into their art. But i dont think ot translates the best into real world applications. In a street fight you pull guard and grab my shirt im punching your face and if you take away that gi 50-60% of the techniques go by by. I dont want to rely on my clothing to win. Because trust me those guys dont like it when i show up for no gi days at our gym and the dudes that get me with the pajamas on are muchhhhh more nullified without it. I find myself winning muchhh more exchanges against the same opponents without the gi

I would LOVE to see a series fir wrestlers starting out in BJJ. It's been 15 years and a couple injuries since then, but I'm about try rolling and am nervous.
Beyond the mental side of it (covered here) having some good moves that would translate easy from common wrestling ones. Examples (just ideas, never rolled before) front head lock -darce &anaconda, head n arm to arm triangle, cow catcher-gullotine. Am I the only one that wants to leverage my previous experience?

Awesome tips! wrestled all my life in Pennsylvania so I'm easily taking guys down with singles and sweeps all day in BJJ as I just started, but shit it's not long before I'm choked out or put in some sort of leg lock... so much more to learn. Lmk if you post some more vids like this!

Hi Chewy, I really like your videos, they are helping me a lot in my first month of BJJ, especially to understand what is the purpouse of rolls. I have been doing garage wrestling for years and when I had my first roll (with a white belt), something very interesting happen: We started from knee on floor position and I could see, he didnť watched his hips at all (actually I haven't met yet any BJJ who watches his/her hips). So I dived for the hips, took down and got mount. In that moment in my head I was like: "Boooom, dadadaaaa I got the mount easy as pie an now............... wait, I have no idea how to submit *cricket noise* "

I'm 41, an ex wrestler and now a one stripe white belt, yes the gi sucked, all the new grips I hated it, on my back was a huge no no, and I'd give up my back almost willingly because I should still be able to escape. How wrong I was...
Six months in, I love gi more than nogi, and I don't mind being on my back and working from there now, and once I figured out triangles from guard life got a touch easier lol...

Btw, I'm a 38 year old, previous NCAA division I wrestler for Duke who is just barely getting into BJJ. I have 4 kids so my growth will be slow since my time commitment is little, but my natural athleticism as an ex-wrestler is helping progress at least a little faster than I would have otherwise. I will say though, I echo your go-go-go statement about wrestling. My first few rolls, I was exhausted right away b/c I didn't know what I was doing and was just trying to throw energy at that problem.

Immanuel Bruno Bey™ oh I’m understanding that side of it, we have that too when training but it’s more I’m giving up my back more when attacking and using certain hold downs. Kesa-Gatame or scarf hold is one of my go to positions and it works really well against white belts and a lot of Blue belts, but higher blue and up seem to be able to get out very easily
