  • This past week I attended a Spinning Retreat, learning more about 4 specific sheep breeds (Bond, Herdwick, Southdown, and Border Leicester), and exploring their fiber through preparing and spinning yarn. In this video I chat about the retreat, traveling there (which was part of the fun!), the spinning equipment I packed, and some of the things I bought while there.
Welcome to Storyteller Stitchery, where we explore the art of fiber crafts through knitting, spinning, and dyeing, inspired by literature and stories from nature. Join Melissa, the founder and dyer, as she shares updates on projects, inspiration behind colorways, and behind-the-scenes in the dye studio and at fiber events.

Where was this retreat and how did you hear about it? You mention San Juan Island but I wasn't clear on where you actually spent time on the retreat. Sounds like it was very enjoyable. Love the Lazy Kate too.

Hi there! The retreat is already at capacity for the next 2 years so I agreed not to share the specifics about the location. The event organizer wants to make sure that regulars that attend each year (some of them for 14 or so years!) are able to keep participating, so there just isn’t the space for new folks to join. It’s a close knit group and understandably those that like to attend regularly want to keep going. Hopefully the info I shared on equipment etc is helpful for any spinning retreat you attend. ☺️❤️

Ahhh, I understand. It does sound very nice -- I can see why they keep it to themselves! lol And yes, everything else you spoke about was very informative. Sounds like something I would enjoy as well. Thanks!@@StorytellerStitchery

Yeah, the group is very welcoming and there definitely isn't an atmosphere of not wanting to include new people, but the location for classes is at capacity with the numbers that attend and are already signed up for future events.

Where was the farm/what was it called again?

Sorry for the late reply! I just saw your comment. The farm was an arranged visit as part of the spinning retreat. I'm not sure if they are open to the public to visit, but I'll send an email now to ask and let you know 💕
