I've heard people say editing takes a lot of work. I've never seen anyone document the actual time it took them to edit a video. That detail helps me to value this video all the more. Thank you so much for taking your time to create and edit these wonderful videos for us to watch and enjoy for free at our leisure

I agree wholeheartedly with this suggestion. There was an amateur historian in the town I grew up in. He published a book about the town's history He lived about a block away from the house I grew up in and when my mom was looking for history about our house the head librarian gave her his name and was kind enough to introduce him to us.

omg, speaking as someone who owns a property where years ago they just "buried" all of the junk and old materials (glass! metal! bricks! Junk! People even in the front freaking yard, not even all out back or anything) now many years later the rain and time are churning it to the surface and it is a first class sucky situation, ESPECIALLY when you have pets and children. You 100% made the right decision to bring it to the dump. If you looked around my property you would never suspect all the stuff coming up all the time, and especially anytime you did a garden bed or a new path. It's so frustrating. Again: good call!

I missed the beginning of the premiere so I didn't hear your comment about "saving the house" from the developer, but the way I see it is you saved it regardless. Even if someone else had bought it without the notion to tear it down, they would have wanted to modernize it and destroy it that way anyway. So you ARE the savior just by wanting to take it back to it's glory days! Major kudos to you and Phil for being willing to put in the elbow grease...LOTS of elbow grease! But totally worth it!

Hi from Ottawa, Shannon and Phil and Canelle! For your tree stumps - I have had success ridding myself of apparently unkillable Manitoba Maple trees by cutting the stump as low as possible, then drilling many holes deep into it. I then poured rock salt in the holes. Did the salt a few times over. Within a few years, the stumps were rotted and easy to remove. It also helps to take a sawz-all to the roots! Cut them as close to the stump as you can. Hope that helps! (in your last video, you were asking for safe ways to kill the stumps...) You can also cover the stumps with whatever planter etc after drilling the holes. That can help, too. Good luck, plucky heroine!

Can’t wait for the video! I think, to the question in your title, yes, you did save your house!
And, I think you saved yourself too!
Once you get it all fixed up, you can live in half, and live comfortably! It looks like a nice, big house. And you can rent out the other half for financial stability. You can weather life’s storms more easily when you have the income from the other half to cover the cost of the house, maybe help with utilities, etc.
And, you saved a lovely old Victorian house from being razed by a developer. I wish you many years of happiness there!

Shannon, you and Phil are such a delight. You are an outstanding speaker, wasting no words and time in repeating yourself, and describing things.... Well let's say when you no longer can fly through the air with the greatest of ease, perhaps you can become a writer. And I am so amused at how you problem solve. When I see the way Phil pops you up on his shoulders so you can work on the ceiling, or see the two of you climbing trees or roofs, I just laugh and go, oh that's right! Their circus performers doing what they know and applying what they know to this project. I just love watching your videos

Yea! It's Friday! It's Shannon Makes! Short or long, I always enjoy your "program." It brings back lots of memories of renovating our first house more than 40 years ago. I fell in love with the front door (beveled glass, letter slot, carved details)! On the downside, every room was painted that 1930's Granny Green, linoleum covered the maple floors, ugly fake brick siding over the original wood, cheap aluminum "storm" windows that rattled in a breeze, drooping suspended ceiling tile, and yes, it had a smelly damp basement. Nearly every project was preceded by... "All you have to do is..." But it did have high ceilings, wide woodwork, spacious rooms, and BIG windows! We didn't get it completely finished, but yes, we saved that house. We were also fortunate to have the original blueprints and work orders from the woman who instructed it be built "in a workmanlike manner!" Thanks for the walk down memory lane complete with falling plaster, crumbling stone foundation, aged boiler & huge radiators. I still miss those big windows.
Yes, you are saving this house! Wishing you the very best with your "new" house adventures and roadside treasure finds. I'll be watching. Hug Cannelle for me.

We have been in your position since 1985. I like that you smartly had not completely moved in. We moved in fully and after many years we are still working on our home. We have moved walls, moved windows, moved doorways, 2 new roofs, tore down the chimney, new windows, new furnace, new water heater, new partial basement, new waterlines, new sewer pipes, rebuilt the kitchen, new electrical, tore down walls to insulate, and many more things. Dynamite and a new house would have been cheaper, but a lot less fun. I love our old woodwork and claw foot tub. I wish we had kept our front porch; we did not realize the roof and beams under the floor were fine and only the porch floor needed replacing. :(

Oh My Corgi Goodness! Cannelle gets SO EXCITED with her sticks. ADORABLE!!!
Whenever I see those spammy messages, I flag them, but YT still doesn't have an option for impersonating a content creator in their list of reasons for reporting.
Something you can do is go into your advanced settings and put key words or phrases that will prevent comments being posted until you can review them. This is also helpful if you don't want someone to dox you in the comments: put just part of your phone number, or just your house number, or just your street name so it won't show up publicly.
If you get the same person posting rude comments, you can block them. They'll still be able to write a comment, but it won't be public. They'll think they commented but no one has to see their blather.
I think we all know you saved your house from that developer!

      @cadileigh9948 5 месяцев назад

My mistake 'cos i abreviated my remarks. I understand about wet conditions and how to manage them as I live at the foot of a mountain in a rainforest - 10 cm / 4 " per day is normal here . As my house had been empty for 3+ years when I bought it 8 years ago the chimneys had allowed all the interior to become so wet much of the interior lime plaster needed replacing after rebuliding chimneys and installing a pellet range to run central heating and a wood burner for fun in summer. Only 1/2 acre but I have also planted trees to do their best to soak up the moisture before it enters the river besides the house as advised by Natural Resources Wales. I have no neighbours between my home and the top of the Tarren mountains ,which translates to Rocky Mountains. So I do not have other properties bringing in their water management problems.
I am fascinated to learn from your exploits what lies within the walls of these buildings which I have wondered about for some time. I lived in California for 3 1/2 years where I saw buildings being built out of chicken wite and cement to be light enough to cope with earthquakes but am surprised that buildings in such a cold climate were made of such fragile materials . Hence my fascination with the project so far. Diolch Cadi

I didn't realize how close your were to 100K! So exciting 😊
I think there's about a 100% chance you did save your house from demolition. It takes a devoted person to tackle a renovation like you are doing, and no developer is going to do that!

I enjoyed the entire video - your navigator sure is cute - and the research is fascinating. Knowing when the gutters came of should help determine how bad the water damage is and perhaps where gutters need to be. But that last bit with the quiet neighbor was a perfect ending. You might get Bambi next Spring! :D

I just discovered your renovation videos last night and I’m almost caught up! Great work and I really enjoy watching the progress! I live in the states, but went to college at STFXU in Antigonish and spent time in Halifax- so your home in NS has a piece of my heart. Nova Scotians are such great people and I miss my time there. Cheers to your adventures and PLEASE have an Alexander Keith for me❤

Actually going by what I could see in the pictures of what you did show, it was a very old house a bit like yours. I only know this as I studied aciteture at collage, because of this certain points jumped out at me even with the pictures being fuzzy.
Yes you are so right, That guy would have ripped down your home without even looking at removing any of the contents from the home, it would have been a double loss.
I am soo glad you managed to make an offer that was better than his. The best part I think is the fact you have two halves, you could keep the whole attic in one piece for your half of the house and then rent out the other half minis the attic and still get a good return that can be used towards maintenance for both halves in the future.

Unfortunately I don’t have a Victorian home, but we are refinishing our wood floors this summer (pulled up uneven tile in the foyer and discovered a totally rotted subfloor) and I am DREADING moving all of the furniture. Our house might not be “antique” but our furniture is, and it is HEAVY. Brushing up on our Tetris skills to make sure we can fit as much stuff as possible in the living room at a time. 🤞

I have so enjoyed watching your videos. I have owned two old house and can't imagine living in anything else. Our former house was a beautiful Victorian/craftsmens built in 1911. Our current home is a sweet little cottage built sometime in the later 1800s. There are certain challenges and quirks with an old house, but they have so much charm and character! BTW... I had a very sweet cardigan corgi named Raven. She would barely stick one toe in the water! 😅
