Bhimbetka rock shelters which has been declared a world cultural heritage of the world by UNESCO in 2003 is a ancient hot spot of prehistoric culture. Bhimbetka caves paintings manifests prehistoric lifestyle in a very sober manner. Auditorium rock, turtle rock, zoo rock and boar rock are some of the prominent paintings which represents human culture of that period in a very emphatic manner. About 24 km from bhimbetka is a town called Bhojpur. Here is a shiva temple built by Parmara King Bhoj in 11th century. Bhojpur Shiva temple has one of the largest Shivalinga. "Bhim" = It is not " Bhim " of the Mahabharata. It is "Bhim Gond Tribe of Madhya Pradesh ". They
are also known as " Bhima Gond" / "Bhimma Gond " Tribe in
different states of India.
"Betka" is the corruption of
"Betkhe" = Foot , its extended
meaning is " foot hill" or at the foot of (Satpura Hills of the Bindhya Range ). This word comes from "Mantsu of Compounding Group"
Hence, the meaning of " Bhim Betkhe " (= actual pronunciation)
is " the village or residence ( rock- shelter) of the Bhim Gond
Tribe of Madhya Pradesh at the
foot of Satpura Hills of the Vindhya Range."
