The reason why windows in some buildings don't open has very little to do with "protecting morons". It's mainly a mix of two things: Liability (hotel doesn't want to be sued if someone does fall out of the window) and physics (very tall buildings often have windows that don't open at all, due to the pressure differential between the top and bottom floors, and the building's AC). We can thank lawyers (and lawsuit-obsessed societies) for the former and gravity for the latter.
The law actually varies a lot by state (ex., in California there is no difference in minimum wage regardless of tips), and in most states where tipping influences minimum wage, it still cannot lead to lower overall income (in other words, if the waiter receives no tips, the employer still needs to meet the minimum legal wage). There are only 7 states where tipped employees can actually be paid less.
I worked in a Pub this summer as a way to be able to afford to go out whilst at uni. I loved the job and everybody that came in and ate gave at least £2 tip. It's optional! You don't have to give a tip! However if you do, you make a lot of people very happy because they know they have done a good job. Phil also mentioned it shouldn't be shared but it should. I worked out back. I did the washing up and helped with the clearing of tables, setting the tables when people left so of course I should receive some of that tip. It's not all about the waiter! He could not serve that table on his own.
Just wondering, do toothbrush packages in the UK not have cardboard on the back? Because here they just have plastic round the front and the cardboard on the back is a perforated place to pull the back off with. Takes 5 seconds max. Not a funny or negative comment, just genuinely curious.
And writing books and being a journalist and appearing on panel shows before she met David and presenting Only Connect and probably more I can't think of right at the moment.
If it is compelled, it is NOT a tip. If anyone pulled that stunt on me, I would inform them that they just GUARANTEED that I would NEVER return to their establishment. Bottom line, if I don't tip, it's because the service was deplorable!!
tipping in north america is stupid. you shouldn't be forced to tip or expected to. it should be given as an extra bonus if the customer feels they want to because they liked the service. that would lead to better service too because people would actually have to be good in order to get tips.
Stop tipping and get them to pay their workers, why must I as a customer worry about your workers getting a fair wage. Provide your service and factor in the cost of your labour.
Victoria should have taken that last round. We, as a species, need to stop tailoring the world to meet the needs of the incompetent. Let parents be responsible for their children, let the morons fend for themselves, and let the rest of us live our lives in peace.
Hey, in the West Indies the fans used to come out and give a player money if he scored a century! That is definitely a tip for a good cricket performance, so Phil can shut it.
First of all, waiters do NOT typically chase customers down the street in pursuit of a tip in the US. Second, wages in America are abysmally low, especially if you are a waiter; employers are allowed to pay less than minimum wage if you work for tips, so if you don't get that tip, you're fucked. You don't know what it's like, so don't you dare judge. Take a job as a waiter in the states sometime and see what a wonderful thing it is, working twice as hard as a British waiter for half the pay.
Or David is a male version of her. She hasn't been as visible but she's been around doing her own smart rant stuff for awhile. Just want to give her her due. : )
But of course this show is made in Britain, where the mimimum wage is the actual minimum so we're not used to the idea. Plus, as you said, it's ridiculous
Victoria was always like this. Apparently ranting is a new form of "comedy". I can`t be doing with her or her husband. They both seem a couple of stuck up toffs.
i never said they did. and i work in a restaurant in canada and have since i was a kid so actually i do know what it's like. most servers i know are lazy as fuck and expect big tips for minimal service and get pissed when they only tip 15%. the other reason tipping in north america is stupid is because the ones who ARE good and work hard often don't get the tips they deserve. they should be paid a proper wage IMO
Cheers Frank Skinner for making the English even worse tippers then they already were! No suprise that ex cricket captain doesnt understand how tips can make minimum wage enough to live on. A little detached from the common folk are we?
phil apparently doesn't realize that in america servers get paid servers wage which is half minimum wage. you can leave cash which makes sure that your server gets it and also most places these days when you give tips on your card it goes directly to your servers wage for the day because they're the one who rings you.
Despite him taking a knighthood and working in England so long, my patriotism still kicks in when English people call Terry Wogan a "national treasure"...
Well, in the US, the minimum wage is lower than Britain to start with; and if you're a waiter, your employer is allowed to pay you LESS than minimum wage and force you to make up the difference from tips. Americans need tips not to get ahead, but just to keep from falling further behind.
LOVED the show, up until the travesty that was the END! Victoria should've been the victor in the last round. In America tips ARE THE WAGE, THEY AREN'T EXTRA. often comprising 80% of a person's salary. It is terrible form for them to have run out after him, and demanded a tip. However, he's a tool for not having tipped in the first place. And it doesn't matter that he didn't intend to stay long. They still had to do all the work of serving him.
"All you're doing is reinforcing your image as an unsophisticated lout."
Terry Wogan is a genius.
Yup, Victoria and David Mitchell really are made for each other :)
thanks for putting this up!
so glad you are back. Thanks BlackHoleBowl Mark 2
FYI if it's not voluntary, it's NOT a tip, it's a fee or surcharge, and a sure fire way to guarantee absolutely no return patronage from me.

I pressed "like" when I saw Victoria CM was in it. Terry Wogan almost managed to spoil it though.

I hate tipping here in Mexico. Extra Money for simply doing your job...as you are supposed to do. Reward for turning up.
She was like this before she ever met him--must be one of the reasons they're married now!
She was ranting before she ever met David Mitchell. She's a smarty.
She's a delight to listen to.

Gotta love Sir Tel.
They probably chased that cricketer because he hadn't realized there was tax to be paid.
Victoria is just so ineffably wonderful, how does she exist?
until someone offers her English breakfast tea
Yep I love David too. After the changing room, thing. I see why they hit it off .
Victoria is turning into David Mitchell
thought my computer was shutting down suddenly during that windows joke :P

Right, get a better paying job you pratts.

Tipping is only an American thing and you obviously are one and forget that there are other countries…so get your dumb head out of your a*se!!

Thanks thou, who hath risen from being bannedh!
PS: Quite funny, but I still miss a first format of r101 a bit...
People who serve the public should be paid more. not have to rely on strong arming people for money.

3 words Tufffers: Not good enough
Wow, she really is a female version of David Mitchell.
