    And one stanza I think you should toss in as well is 76. A life with good reputation is ultimately the best thing you can have. If your descendants learn and love your story, you really succeeded in life.

    That last point is very true. Another quote that I heard that can really drive it home is this "most people die in their early 20's, they just don't get buried for a while after". There is so much emphasis in this modern world on how someone should live, how much money one needs to make, etc. Sometimes it you need to just take a step back and enjoy what you have before you can't.

    There’s a poem I really like by Jospeh Campbell that I was reminded of near the end of the video. “Suddenly your ripped into being alive. And life is pain, and life is suffering, and life is horror, but my god your alive and it’s spectacular” yes, it does hurt. But at least you are here to feel it

    Damn this is the reason why this spiritual path calls to me more than any other. The stanzas you quoted were the final confirmation I needed to know this is the right path for me, as that is exactly how I feel about how to go about life and the importance friendship. It feels so good I think I'll watch the video again 😂

    I loved this video! There is so much more to "the Vikings" than people realise (myself even). As a Dane, I can say that a lot of these statements still are a part of our culture today - I just didn't know that they were a part of the Viking era as well. I think that I definitely need to read the Poetic Edda myself! Thank you for sharing your knowledge :)

    Norse Paganism is one branch of the larger tree of nature spirituality. More generally the purpose of life is to align with the powers of nature and the Divine. By observations of these powers one get the nature virtues first written in total by the Stoic philosophers: Growth (Living Life), Balance (Moderation), and Connection (Friendship). Also we live in a spiritual/social network so what goes around comes around (law of return or attraction).

    I have always been interested in norse history/culture. But it was in 2015 that I began practicing norse paganism. I broke up with my partner and I found myself alone in a difficult period of my life. I printed a poster of the Nine Noble virtues and I began reading the Havamal daily. I began to live by those principles I cant describe how much I learned and grew as a person. That is what put me on my feet again. Forever grateful for that to the Gods and my ancestors.

    I agree 100%, the best thing about living life is preserving life as a whole. We will teach generations to come about all of these topics mentioned. Therefore they will live life and hopefully continue the same chain. There’s another stanza that in a sense allows us to live on after death (can’t remember the number) but basically all of us will die one day but the reputation of a good person will live on (paraphrased lol)

    Great video Jacob. Hávamál is definitely one of the better parts to start, but I think the rest of the Edda stories have even more to say about it.
    I really like all the (sometimes, somewhat implicit) death-rebirth cycles. One of the very few things you are guaranteed in your life is everything constantly changing, and how well you live your life is directly related to how well you manage all these changes. Usually it requires only a minor adaptation, but sometimes it requires you to "die" and be reborn again. Just like Odin had to die before he could obtain the runes. Odin went from the oral tradition of story telling, to the written one. It required something to die, so the renewed part of him could take its place. I also think that, the reason Odin hung for 9 nights, is because women are pregnant for 9 months (i.e. 9 lunar cycles). So Odin could be reborn after 9 nights. Of course, night is strongly related to the moon, reason should be self-evident. I also think that this is the reason that the number 9 seems so important in Norse mythology.

    Why do you guys care so much about vikings? They were only a small group within a larger norse culture, within a larger germanic culture, within a larger indo-european sphere of influence. Germanic paganism existed for roughly three thousand years before christianization, and the viking era was less than 500 years of that. Why do you guys care so much about that tiny group of people within that specific area germanic culture within that specific time period? If you want to practice germanic or even more specifically norse paganism why do you act like vikings are the be-all end-all of your religious beliefs? That's like Tacitus writing about the Mannerbund of various tribes and acting like that's representative of the whole tribe lmao

    • @sponge5196

      Its because they are New Age types who thinks the vikings are cool and throw a coat of paint over Christianity or, more specifically, Wicca and call it "Norse Paganism." Why do you think Norse Paganism is the most popular branch of Paganism? Even Greek paganism is in the shadow of Asatru.

      @ianharrison5758 2 года назад

      I don’t see it that way. To live life for the sake of living it is important, as is a life of generosity and moderation. But that is not all that exists in life.
      I see it like this: no one can avoid death, it is the great equalizer. If you are to die in battle, it is better to die with honor, courage, and savagery than it is to live on your knees as your new masters break your spirit.
      The Goal of most of the Norse was most likely to die peacefully. Norse paganism is not dualistic, there is no reason of punishment for the wicked or the unbelievers, only rest for weary souls who lived a long, happy life.
      For the precious, chosen few, a different fate awaits them. They show the courage, battle prowess and strength required to fight in the end times, to fulfill the will of fate and be consumed by Ragnarok. This is not a curse, this is a blessing offered only to those worthy of it. It may not be what you asked for, or expected, but it is not by chance the Valkyries carry your body away from a bloody battle. For those who see Valhalla, they Do not weep at the loss of friends or family who died peacefully in their beds.
      Instead, they drink, laugh, reflect, and prepare for the final defense of EVERYTHING they hold dear. There is no greater honor than that
