Shigesato Itoi is a genius. no one can change my mind.
M3 deserves a standing ovation for, as you put it, having the "guts to break your heart". It made me sob and laugh and changed my life. It's always so heartwarming to hear about people's experiences with this amazing game!
I also didn't know that Tomato had released a new version of the translation patch! Can't wait to play it, guess I have new holidays plans now, hahahahaha
Mother 3 is a really great game, but honestly the last bits of story really just made the game click. Totally wasn't expecting the turns that it took, but it was well worth the time playing. As always - good stuff!
I can't wait to finish Earthbound so I can play this game (M3 is the only one I have no knowledge about)

I am still in the process of playing Mother 3 right now. Your previous videos about the other Mother games has made me finally decide to just play instead of waiting any longer for an official release. I will watch this video once I am done with the game, but after seeing your other videos, I am sure it is great as well!

Huh, I had no idea this game had that "rhythm" combat feature. Kinda makes me wish that more of the modern "retro-styled" RPGs would experiment with stuff like this.

Can I just say I LOVE all the recent Mother videos....this has been my favorite game series for most of my life and it's always nice to see it get recognition outside of the typical cult following it has

I'm certainly part of that cult following, considering EarthBound is what started me down the path I'm on, but after 100 games I really wanted to give the game the proper treatment it deserves as a sort of 100-reviews extravaganza! Feels awesome to have finally done the series properly, and revisit the nostalgic craziness of anticipating a sequel for over a decade! xD
Good news on the audio quality front: I released a hack for the game recently that cleans up a ton of the background hiss and noise!

If there's one thing we know about Nintendo it's that they love leaving money on the table. They will pay a company to make Bayonetta 2. They will pay to publish any SE rpg they can in the west. "Mother 3? What even is that?" Nintendo

@@doburu4835 I don't remember any copyright songs. That makes no sense. Japan has stricter copyright than U.S.
@@drowningin that's the weird thing about cr laws in japan. They can literally name their characters as band groups without precaution(Jojo). Most of the songs from both earthbound and mother 3 are heavily sampled. And some certain parts of the game are hard to officially localized without cutting chunks of those problamatic(?) Scenes unlike fantranslation wildwest rules.
I'm just pointing out the logistics problem.
@@doburu4835 which songs are you talking about? Also there are no problematic scenes. The people who say that are apologetic to no one who is mad. It's a silly stance to take in life to see art as problematic. That's a sure fire way to end up with the problems the west & previously communist & fascist regimes face. They are problematic because it goes against party narratives. You should never have to call or think of art as a problem. No one ever said they were offended, yet that word keeps being used
@@drowningin i don't see those as bad too in particular but the mainstream view is in collide with our views unfortunately. In reagrds with the sampled songs The bat theme in particular has some batman theme motifs in them and in some others.

Also, I played on a gba cart I bought on eBay. Someone put the English hack onto a transparent red cart. Loved playing it on gba after all these years
03:34 technically this is Earthbound 2 because Mother 1 is Earthbound 0 or beginning (so the prologue/episode 0) Mother 2 is Earthbound (1) (because it's the chapter/episode 1) so it's technically Earthbound 2 even know it is NOT directly linked to Earthbound 1
I was using the phrase "EarthBound 2" colloquially, the way some people say "Chrono Cross is not Chrono Trigger 2" despite both games having plots with ties to their predecessors. Just a faster way to give viewers the right expectations even if it's not "literally" correct. Language can be kinda fluid like that. :)

I recently bought an original Japanese copy to play on the Retron 5 with the translation patch. I might’ve bought a prepatched cart, but I couldn’t be 100% sure it would work on the Retron 5. Besides, it’s cool having a legit copy, even if it costs a bit. Anyway, the sound quality on the Retron 5 is really good at least, and the story is my favorite of the series. I actually cried at the ending, and that just doesn’t happen to me with games.

Mother 3 was the magnum opus of videogames. Sorry, folks, there's no going up from here.
Here is an Idea, you could do another "mother of summer" next year but review games with a Mother influence like "Lisa the Painful", "Omori", "moon remix RPG", "OFF by Morrtis Ghost", "Anodyne 1+2", and "Jimmy and the pulsating mass". It's just an idea so do what ever.
I was actually thinking about something like this. There are plenty of games out there inspired by Mother, I think we may have material for quite a while. :)
Are you going to play eastward? It has that eight bit RPG built into it that is based on earth balance. Have you heard about it? I’m really interested for you to check it out as well.
Mother 3 is the game that savagely kicks you in the balls, and then says "Hey buddy, you ok... Come on, it wasn't even a hard kick.... I know, lets go get some ice cream, my treat!"

I have started Earthbound probably 10x over the last 10years and never finish it. It’s really tuff to play. Random fights happen a lot making the game drag on, if you don’t die. And unless you have a walkthrough, have no idea what to do next. I want to love it so badly. What am I doing wrong?
Hey Derek. Do you think you'll play Eastward? I heard there's even an in game mini rpg that you play at an arcade strewn Across the game world that's a blatant homage to Earthbound called Earth Born. I really would advise against letting this one slip underneath the radar. Eastward is special.

Doubtful. Itoi stated he's out of ideas. He also said that Mother will live on in the players. Some have taken that literally and have started making Mother-inspired games. Check out Oddity, and Oddventure.

If you want the rhythm/combat minigame to work well you need to play on original hardware, or virtual console inject on Wii U or 3ds! Your can play the entire game without it, but it is best if you can enjoy that component as well. If you can find a way to play on a hacked Wii U the game looks beautiful upscaled on a full-sized, widescreen TV. Also, I took someone else's advice and renamed the characters after close friends and family. I recommend it! One of my favorite RPGS.
For my recent playthrough I used a repro cartridge on my GameCube's GameBoy Player and GBI homebrew. Doesn't get a whole lot more original hardware than that. I just couldn't get the hang of the beats, I think.
Yeah, it's still pretty tough to get them right! Sorry, that wasn't in reference to you. I think I remembered from another video that you use GB Player on on GameCube. Wish I still had mine!!
To anyone else reading this, GBA emulation still isn't perfect, and any lag/framerate issues throw off the rhythm mini-game. I played through the entire game without it for my first playthrough, getting in a few double and triple hits here and there. I still loved the game without it, but it is definitely satisfying to get those full 16hit combos in if you can find a way to get the game running at a stable speed.

I think if mother 3 had been released properly by Nintendo I don’t think there would had been that big of a backlash. Not even from the trans community in just my state yet alone the whole world. It’s as non sensical situation that would be the equivalent of if some one did a rant video today about hot coffe our being adopted. If your die hard fans of those two franchises our been around on RUclips long enough you know what I’m talking about.
censoring Mara hurt my soul but I guess that's to be expected
lol, censoring Mara was honestly _mostly_ done as a gag. I think the way I censored it makes it look even slightly *more* offensive than if I had left it as-is. I even added an extra "wiggle" effect to make the censor graphics shimmer for added effect! :-P

Why don't Nintendo just use this translation as their own and make all the moneys? Put a disclaimer for the bits that might offend people. Folk will understand.

lmao! My good friend, have you looked up Oddity yet? Once upon a time it was called the Mother 4 Fan Project, but rebranded and looks like it will be phenomenal.
I'm the only one who hates it. The storyline, the bosses, the combat; all of it is stupid and uncharmingly childish.
