- I figured I would upload a short video, going over the transmission fix for the Hyundai AWD issue. No special tools need, and the repair is surprisingly fast and easy..... after you remove the transmission from the vehicle, that is
Link to the Differential basket, OEM part. This is for the 2013-2015 Santa Fe's. Check fitment to be sure

Keen to see the spider basket disassembled and put back together
Thank you for this. My AWD light has been popping up from time to time and I think this might be the issue I’m having on my 2017 Santa Fe Sport AWD.
Although I can’t do the repairs myself, I do have a very trusted mechanic that rebuilt my engine after rod bearing failure and Hyundai’s failure to honor their lifetime warranty on them. I’m going to take it in and have him check this out to see if this is what’s causing my issue and hopefully service the transmission so I can get the full life of my rebuilt engine and car.
Again, THANK YOU!🙏🏻
Did you take it to the mechanic? If you did, what was the problem?
I have a 2017 santa fe sport, and my AWD is not working, but it's not presenting any errors in the dash.
Thanks for your update and videos . This confirms what’s wrong with my 15 Santa Fe fully loaded 2.4 swb suv. Bought the car last summer when a drunk rear ended and totaled my 12 crv. Looked like a nice car until 2 weeks after titled it I felt a hard thump when backing up. No shop could figure it so, I have been driving it carefully until the other day the car started jerking and thumping upon a quick left turn. Lifted it up and saw the drive shaft not turning even with the 4wd lock on. Body and interior are original and in great shape but with 104k on the clock and burning 3/4 quart of oil every 1000 miles I’m going to just drive it in 2wd until I can find a reliable car like a Honda or Toyota . It’s a shame I got burned and ,I know or at least I thought I knew cars ,but in my opinion it’s not worth repairing if I can can drive it in 2 wd with no catastrophic failure. Thanks again for your videos .
I appreciate the 2 videos you have on this issue.
Thank you for your videos!! I took the seized engine of my Santa Fe Sport down and discovered that I also had the exact same problem!! I didn't know that my AWD wasn't actually working.. Thank you!
Thanks for the link my dad told me it didnt work today :( ordered the part and I'll have the box out next weekend, top man 👊
Did you add any grease to the spline on reassembly?
Any specialty tools out side of a press and common tools needed? I’m an experienced tech, just mostly work on euro not Korean want to make sure there’s no special tools needed. Breakdown and re-assemble of the basket with spider gears straight forward? Need to handle this on wife’s car. Thanks so much!
Good vid mate thanks, I had torque converter repaired and replaced filter while I had case apart. I didn’t know replacing just the diff side wudv fixed this up that’s good information to know. Buying a new transfer box for 2500 deterred me from repairing it along with the diff carrier too much work n expense I thought just to get AWD back. Cars more of a family mover than something il take up a dirt road. I rate these cars they’re prob the best 7 seater iv driven plenty power economy and comfort
Thanks for the video, if its prone to happen, replacing the spare part, would it not just fail again soon? I have the same issue with 3 Tucsons.
@@DanielHernandez-v6j I pack the splines with grease during reassembly. This should help keep water out and keep the splines in good, clean condition
Perhaps a lubricant like molybdenum disulphide in that output spline?
Yep
God bless you.. greeting from Montenegro...
Hello, great video.
I have a 2014 Kia Sportage SL Awd... so the question is: I have doubt about rear wheels traction, because in mood I tried to accelerate and only front wheels spins, even with AWD LOCK button activated the rear wheels never engaged. So I lifted the car and simple set to DRIVE and made accelerations trying to Awd system to engage the rear wheels.. but nothing THE DRIVESHAFT from Transfer case to the rear differential NEVER ROTATES!!
As I understant this Awd system engage completly on the rear coupling, so I must have rotation from the transfer to drive shaft with car lifted right?
Also AWD light pop up a few seconds on dashboard when accelerate with car lifted off ground.
Yep, sounds like the same issue with the transmission. It is sometimes possible that the transfer case can break, but it seems to be pretty rare. Most of the time, it's the transmission issue as shown in the video
@@jamminmechanics thanks so much. for answer
Thanks so much for your videos on this fix, very helpful. Just wondering if the bearing on the diff basket is pressed on? Can it be removed without damaging, or should I order a new one? Thank you!
Hello, where does i found thos parts for a kia portage 2014 ???
Hello... if it is possible to show or explain about the replacement of the parts inside the transfer case oil gasoline engine theta ll 2.4 GDI car Sorento model 2015 with 2015... thanks for your help
Thanks for the video, very helpful.........can you advise the symptoms of this particular fault? I have a 2008 5 speed auto producing a clunking noise/jolt when shifting from P to R.............main dealer says transfer case "struggling to engage NSF wheel.................. but no one able to diagnose where the fault actually is.
With this vehicle, there simply was no AWD. If the front wheels slipped, the ABS and traction control lights would turn on. Sometimes when they fail, they can make a grinding noise when accelerating. Sounds like you might have a bad coupler joint on the rear driveshaft. I've seen those make pretty loud clunking noises
@@jamminmechanics Many thanks for this, brother. All joints, links, bushings, couplings and drives have been checked and appear sound. Latest mechanic is pretty sure that there is a fault within the transfer case, but the cost of removal and stripping down in itself makes for an uneconomical repair, and I can't find anyone in Ireland, north or south, who is prepared to do it. Even specialists in GB say it isn't worthwhile, and Hyundai are apparently woeful at supplying parts for these. Seems like a 2nd hand case is the only option, but that might be as bad as the one I have.............the joys of motoring.
Hey jammin mechanic do you happen to have the part numbers for the basket housing and the coupler for the pto?
I should, yes. Would need to go check. The basket is a bit of a pain to find. Dealerships don't like doing the work to look it up, they just want to replace the whole transmission
Would also like to know the part number as well, great video mate helps a lot thanks

The rear differential coupler has gone again ( 3rd time) on my AWD 2010 3.5L Santa Fe, also have a leaking seal from knuckle axel to the back wheel - dealer says the axel may be seized in knuckle - altogether an expensive fix for year & mileage (est. $ 2500). So Can I simply detach the rear drive shaft, and make the vehicle a FWD ? Any issues in doing such ? Thx
Should be able to do that, yes. Only issue I'd expect would maybe be the traction control light turning on when your front wheels slip on anything
I left from a light yesterday and got a pop and my rear wheel drive stopped working. fronts still work..can i drive it like this for a while til i get the money up to fix it?
Can you do a video about fixing the gearbox of a santafe
We’re you able to remove the transmission on the ground or is a garage ramp needed?
Easiest way is to remove the engine and transmission together out the front. The design of the vehicle makes it very easy to remove the front clip and the engine/transmission can be removed right out the front. The rear driveshaft and front CV axles will need to be removed, Which does mean you'll need to get underneath it. So having it on good, stable ramps works or have it on good jack stands. Safety first!
@@jamminmechanics am I able to remove transfer case to inspect the gear in question?
With my front wheels on the ground, vehicle in park and rear wheels off the ground I am able to rotate my driveshaft. I did this procedure this morning.
Yep, sounds like the same problem. If you can turn the driveshaft with the transmission in park, you have this failure
@@jamminmechanics would you have a list of the parts I would need to do the complete transmission repair myself.
Hello!
Can you explane how to take a parts out from the transmission. I my transmission at the table an i have opened it, but dont know how to take proken part away.
Sorry!!😂😂😂
Just have to lift it!😅😅😅
awesome! Do you happen to know anyone in Ontario Canada can take on this repair..?
Sorry, no
Cost please
Part number please?
Check the description for the link to the OEM part I used
@@jamminmechanics thanks!
Thank you i got the ix35 samething no AWD
Please can 2wd transmission convert to 4wd transmission the same A6MF2
Engine AND tranny? I'd leave the keys in it in a bad neighbourhood and hope it goes away.... or tat you are making some $$ on us watching. Thanks for the content but also what POS
Great video, however is there a problem with heat treating these components , seems that female spline may be soft?
Yes, soft cast steel. The splines on the transfer case are machined chromium/steel alloy and are perfectly fine
@@jamminmechanics thanks I thought so
Can i get a diff locker for that ?
I hope this is fixed on the newer hyundais
For the 2017 it's not. I saw one 2021 too with the same problem. I have a 2017 Santa fe sport AWD and it's not working for me. I don't know yet if that is the problem but could be.
