Yeah female idols are held to a way higher standard. It's not necissarily due to the companies regarding whats expected of them, but more so due to the fans. Korea has a culture of bullying, especially against women by women. So when fan wars are blazing the female idols get it much worse. But it is all the time, someone is always out there trying to find a reason to hate on a female idol, so while male idols pull their shirts off and grind the floor on average without anyone batting an eye, a female idol can barely show cleavage without being called out for being too suggestive. A recent example is Giselle from the group Aespa, she legit got so much hate just for rolling her eyes back in a pose since it was considered "too sexual". Though it's not limited to purity standards, the idol Seulgi from Red Velvet recently had to apologize because people gave her so much hate for changing shoes with her manager at the airport, even though the manager is the one that wanted to help her since her feet hurt from dance practice. She had to write an apology letter "to the masses" for daring to subject her poor manager whom she has worked with for like 15 years to wear her shoes at the airport. These are "scandals" involving female idols from the last 2 weeks, theres so much more all the time.
I totally agree it’s a given that western artists are not held to the same standard performanc-wise as kpop idols for example, however I believe it’s because the market is different,, western culture prioritizes authenticity such as the artist writing their own lyrics or having a heavy hand in production or the music video etc. whereas in the east performance and aesthetics are prioritized, it’s an added bonus if a kpop idol can compose but it’s expected for a company to give the idols a song to record, plan out their choreo, concept, etc. whereas in the west we can compromise our favorite artists being able to command a stage as well if their music has emotion behind it. Now there are idols/artists that are exceptions obviously in both markets but i find it really intriguing how
I've really enjoyed following you guys along on Eric's Babymonster journey. I have to admit, when this series first started I wasn't the biggest fan of Babymonster and only really tuned in for Eric and Janci. However, not only have I thoroughly enjoyed this series but I have also found myself leaving with a much greater appreciation for BM as a group. I am highly looking forward to future Kpop reactions, keep up the great work Eric, Janci, and Flynn!
Thank you Janci for highlighting how much pressure these Idols deal with from fans being over critical. Especially to the female idols. It's gotten so bad nowadays even minors like Ahyeon who are rookies get it bad. It's a rough industry and I hope she doesn't lose her spark.

i’m excited for the kpop101! i think introducing eric to groups from all the different companies will really give him perspective on the different training styles each company focuses on, and even the different standards girl and boy groups are held to by fans. beware of the crazy fans though as you start diving into bigger groups (armys and blinks) bc the are ruthless sometimes to people critiquing their favorite groups! please do sprinkle in some XG! there is an ongoing argument of whether XG are k-pop or not. but regardless i think it’s a good perspective for you guys of a “non k-pop” group respecting and utilizing the k-pop training style and techniques to impact not just k-pop but internationally. they even have a documentary that brings light to how tough training actually is and the controversial aspect of who gets selected and training idols so young.

You can't compare BTS who has been around for a decade already with 60 million fans. Baby Monster is a debut group with 6 million fans and is out there fighting for a fan base. If you compare Treasure with Baby Monster, both YG groups and have gone through the same training regime, Baby Monster certainly is getting the views that Treasure struggles to get. Baby Monster has to work a lot harder because they also do get the views and the company will invest alot more in showing off the girls.

That said, some of the criticism I've heard talks about Babymonster being Blackpink 2.0 and they're just a copy of Blackpink. Everyone has an opinion and unfortunately, expresses it on social media, no matter how hurtful or damaging it may be. If those negative Nellies would just chill and let these girls develop they might see what we see in them...versatility and talent. Just my 2 cents. I love the dynamic you bring to your reactions. Itzy is a girl group who had dance choreography similar to male groups (in their beginning years) and it destroyed them physically. Also, YG groups choreo is designed different because it is designed for them to still be able to sing while doing it live where most groups lipsync because it is impossible to do their choreo while singing. The line dance of this is awesome. Everglow i another girl group who uses alot of male group choreographers and is awesome. Don't know if you reacted to them yet, but you should because they are awesome and at that same level of overall talent with Blackpink and BabyMonster and have a similar musical style and video style as tBlackpink & BabyMonster to the point that they should be another YG group. If Everglow was with a company who knew what marketing is (please move to YG) they would be as big as Blackpink. Six sweet girls with elite level talent in everything - visuals, singing, dance, rap, stage presents, musicality, with different vocal tones like YG style.
