Thanks for the beautifully detailed instruction :) However, there's a chance of simplification... Struts will slide easily without caps if the notch in the sticks is too wide for the diameter of the (stretched) string. While capping (or similar) is necessary when tendons are doubled like seen here, a slit width slightly smaller than the not tensioned string makes building much easier.

There is another way to build these tension structures. If you add holes to the strut centers your ends can be tied more directly to the strut below. I added this note with more detailed info to youtube "how to build a tensegrity icosahedron"

Well thank you! Have you made your own yet? You can extrapolatethe design to come up with some cool shapes.

the case when I first tried to do everything myself and after several hours of trying to go nowhere I decided to look at the instructions and realized that I did not have the right components for this design

Want to see the simplest 2D tensegrity model? Take a look at a kite. Want to see even 1D one? Just look at a bow. Tensegrity is magic came true. :)

Does tensegrity work in reverse? The structures I've seen so far are stable against gravity pressing down on them. Would a similar tensegrity structure be stable against centrifugal forces pulling it apart? Or would you have to rearrange the tension and compression elements to get the same effect?

That is a very good question. Statics is the course of study you want to research, in addition to basic Physics.

Yes in my experience the structures created via tensegrity can be independent semi rigid objects. If you change the direction of the forces applied it will simply change shape until all the tension and compression members balance the forces applied. So yes the structure will be fine, but no it will not look like it does under gravity.

Hardware store has dowels and a saw to cut slots. Fabric store has elastic.

i just throw bread crumbs around the house and allow yeast and fungus to grow into furniture and home decors etc,i also eat in my bed now so i dont need to buy pillows and bed sheets etc...and hopefully by the end of this year id have created a heaven for all kinds of insects, reptiles and small mammals to open up an observational centre, be self taught and earn a respectable degree in behavioral science among species and document the course of nature's transformation from a inorganic concrete structure to bio diverse zoological garden
