Heath is a veritable artist when he's working. The detailed explanations and footage of the different steps in the repair of these really pay off in this video. Sort of like listening to a walking encyclopedia when he speaks. Another great video guys.
Trenton & Heath, great work! I actually had a few Tecovas specific questions. Is it possible to resole them with a synthetic sole something similar to dainite? Also, does JR make a slightly thicker sole that could be used? I’m asking because my ropers get used mostly for dancing and going out, where a leather sole is nice. I’m thinking of getting a “Jackson” square toe which would be used more for causal use and light work. In that case rubber or synthetic would work better for me.
I've owned a few pair of western boots and just received a pair for Christmas from my fiancé. I could tell instantly the level of quality, far surpassing their price, but to watch you deconstruct the boot and point out that literally every facet of the boot is 100% traditional (excluding the seat, which is an acceptable swap), makes me even happier. You are also an artist and will be getting boots of mine to resole. (I just don't trust a Chicago cobbler to understand the intricacies of western boot's unique features).
I have to say that in my review of the Tecovas boots I have seen a few videos on resoling them. You by far are the best I have seen when it comes to resoling the boots. You take the steps and time to put the boots back in original shape. I appreciate the work and craftsmanship you put into the process. Thanks for the video.
I had been lookign at the ostrich forever and the wife noticed as she bought me a pair for xmas last year. Most comfortable boot ive ever owned. So much so that i bought a pair of ropers for work and theyre also amazingly comfortable, even standing on a ladder.
Wow! You are an artist! Great video! I now understand a lot more about cowboy boots than, "Hey! Those are cute!" I never considered just how complex the construction of a boot really was. How you can rip that all apart and resemble it with new parts is simply amazing. I thought when you first begin, 'well, good luck.' Thank you for teaching me something new.
Hello Chris, I got a question for you since you own a couple of tecovas boots. I got a pair of the Jacksons in the black color and when I first walked on a wet surface (puddle), I noticed the paint started to kind of wipe off the sole. is this normal for new boots or is it a manufacturer mistake? thanks,
Wow, you sir are an artist! I've always bought Lucchese - absolutely love them, however, now I'm 75 y.o. lady living on social security and can no longer afford them. I've been looking for a good boot without the big price tag. I've been spoiled by having such comfortable good quality boots. I'm sold on Tecova and am ordering a pair. Your video was amazing. Thanks for putting this up. Again, you are an artist!
So glad I found this channel since I simply love to watch a true craftsman perform his craft. Very, very nice work and as one who grew up wearing cowboy boots, I learned a lot. BTW - very nice camera and sound work as well.
That looks like a well made boot! So glad your doing cowboy boots. I’m British but lived in Canada for many years where my love of cowboy boots really took off, my best pair are a pair of vintage Justin’s in black full quill ostrich, beautiful comfortable boots that I found in the thrift store unused for $50! Justin were fantastic as I sent them the serial numbers and they told me they were a custom order back in 1986! What is it with Luchesse and Alden. I always thought them the pinnacle of US mass made brands but they both cheap out in various ways but don’t pass that on to the customer!
ianmedium Wow...great find! I have a pair of ostrich boots as well and love them. Lucchese’s, as a whole, are good boots. We refurbish a lot of them. I’m not sure if they’re trying to keep it very traditional and old school without the cork, but it surprise us. I do think Alden and Lucchese are both very overpriced.
Well, that does it! I've been looking at Tecovas for about a year and actually just went to the Lucchese store to buy some boots. Needless to say, I didn't purchase Lucchese, but Tecovas, The Cole, in Chocolate Caiman!
@@mikeholley5662 I agree...I returned the Tecovas I purchased because my left boot was a half size smaller than the right boot. You definitely get what you pay for!
Tecovas are considerably cheaper than Lucchese from what I can tell. Tecova lizards are $300ish and Lucchese are $1000. Alligator $500 vs $5000. Its not really about hipsters and kids but value. I guess if you can afford it grab the best boots possible but id rather just replace when worn out. I will agree Ive had considerable QC issues but I expected it.

I've been obsessed with their Shane ropers since I saw them. Not the biggest fan of the roper style, but that shape and the granite suede is just fantastic!!! I'm in the Austin area where they're based, so I will be heading in to their store to try them on! Thanks for the video!
My buddy just got a pair of exotic skin Tevocas boots you mentioned in the end of the video. They are really nice. You guys keep surprising me with different shoes. I really enjoy watching this channel. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thanks, Roger! We appreciate you watching. We have really been impressed by Tecovas. May have to put a pair of those exotic skinned ones on my Christmas list this year.
I'm convinced!! I'll go ahead and purchase my first pair and pray you're still in business should mine ever need your artistry!!! Thank you for your integrity!
Love Tecovas! Also Mikoleon is Guatemalan made and amazing. Full grain, Goodyear welt, etc. Mainly for women and children but they do have men’s occasionally.
In the market for a good boot. Something to remember my dad+ with. He used to get his boots custom made in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. This vid sold me. Thanx.
On 5 August, I received my Tecovas Harpers. I haven't ever been as happy with a pair of boots as I am with these! However, I have a problem: For the life of me, I can't find a pair of hook backed shoe trees for cowboy boots! I can find trees for cowboy boots, but not hook backed. The others don't keep the heels in proper shape. *HELP!!!* EDIT: Found them!!
My Tecovas boot collection includes ostrich, alligator, caiman, and suede. Best boots I’ve ever owned. Excellent customer service too. Anyway, this video was terrific and informative. Thanks 👍🏻
Outstanding craftsmanship! Loved watching and being educated at the same time. Yes, Tecovas makes a great boot. I own a few pair and they are well made, not to mention a beautiful boot.
I remember when I was an undergrad, I saved up for 6 months to buy a pair of Lucchese boots. My buddy and I both saved up some money and bought a pair. they were about $350 a pair. Everyone told us that you buy expensive boots because they don't wear out and you can resole them. Both our Lucchese boots fell apart in short order after getting wet once. Ill never buy another pair of those. I miss the days when Dan Post and J. Chisolm made good boots.
Get yourself some Tecovas! Watch this video a second time! They're well made, and less than over-priced. Check out their website. It's very informative. Why am I trying to sell you on a pair? I ordered a pair of Harpers on 31 July. I put them on for the first time on the morning of 5 August. I'm in love!! They were $275!!
You’ve convinced me! I’ve been eying Tacovas for almost 2 years now and they just opened up a Tacova Store here in Fort Worth Texas where I live a few months ago so I’ll be heading there tomorrow to purchase myself a pair!!
I was surprised to see the cork in the tecovas. I was assuming they would of skipped that step in manufacture. So that was nice to see. This was a great video and you did an excellent job on the resole as usual. But I would of loved to see the upper work, as they needed some serious attention. As those boots had alot of scuffs, discoloration, stains etc. That's one of my favourite parts to watch in these type of videos.
Thanks guys! I greatly appreciate your video on this company's boots. It's what led me to buy a pair of their smooth ostrich Justin's. I had a set of Vibram sole savers put on by a local shop in PA as well. They're honestly one of the most comfortable pairs I own
Thanks for reviewing the Tecovas as you repaired them. I’ve been looking at them for my next boot purchase and they look like a good quality boot for the price. Love your channel, but then again, I love shoes😉
WOW... I truly enjoyed your video. VERY informative. I learned allot through your process of rebuilding a boot. AND, the review of Techovas as a brand. THANK YOU so much. Great video !
I have two categories for my shoes - staples and accents. My staples consist of those shoes which have a longer lifespan and often (but not necessarily) a higher price point. These include Church's, Allen Edmonds, Cheaney, Wolverine, and Crockett & Jones. These shoes are kept in regular rotation and, with minimal care at home and the occasional re-sole, will (and have) lasted me for years. My accents are those brands that I buy with the intent of occasional wear. Banana Republic, Thursday Boots, Jack Erwin, and Aldo are some of my favorites. These come out every so often and while I do take care of them so far as cleaning and shining, I would have strong reservations investing the money to have them re-soled. For the record, I am not disparaging these brands; the construction of the shoe runs in line with the price point and I would not expect a $135 pair of shoes to last a lifetime of regular wear. That said, I think they are a steal given the fact that I wear them 4 or 5 times a year so they do last for years. (I tend to buy a simple, basic shoe and nothing too 'trendy" - I can wear them for years without fashion regrets) One exception is Doc Martens. I have worn these for years and I have yet to purchase a pair that not only broke in very quickly but also gave me years of consistent wear. For $140 I think that they are a great bargain and one of the few brands that actually look pretty cool if you aren't the most disciplined when it comes to regular shoe shining.
I'd been seeing Ad's for Tecovas boots for a while now (I think I even randomly got a catalog in the mail) and had been wondering if they really where the quality they where claiming. Glad to see this video and get a informed answer from someone who can really tell the quality. Probably going to really consider Tecovas for my next pair of boots.
Great video and very informative! I have been back and forth trying to decide between several brands and you sold me on the Tecovas. Just ordered a pair of Banderas!
I have a pair of Tecovas, in fact the same ones shown. I like them just fine and am glad to see they are of high quality. Have worn Tony Lamas for a long time and I think these compare in quality.
This upcoming weekend I'm going to go purchase me a pear of Tecovas boots. 255 bux it expensive to me but this video helped make up my mined even more.
I got a pair of ropers in calf leather from the "defect" sale they held in Houston and I can't find the defect, they look beautiful, and they are super comfortable. Probably the most comfortable shoes that I own.
I stand by my Tecovas...unbelievable quality and are right up there with more expensive boots. Customer service wise...they go outta their way to make sure you are Satisfied. Great video btw.
This is so cool to watch! I don't know how I got started watching your channel but boy am I happy. What a cool thing! I'm super interested in this now!!!
You do some excellent work. I'm from around the Elk River, Minnesota area where our local boot store closed shop, the Boot Mender, due to health reasons after 40 some years in the trade. Purchased and had boots repaired there. Gonna mis him and his shop. Good to see how other brand of boots n shoes are constructed. I'm in the way of wanting a new pair of western boots. These Tecovas look to be the ticket.
i am in the market for a pair of cowboy boots. i haven't had a pair in 12 years . your video gives a lot of info. i too have been thinking of a tecovas. im glad to hear your opinion, that tecovas is a pretty good boot, constructed well. - you are a professional - good job, thanks. JDS/CT 12-5-19
I bought my 1st 2 pair of boots to small.....I ordered the 3rd pair" wide" OMG what a difference////I called the company and ask for a discount if I bought the other 2 as a "wide"....To may amazement.....i returned those small boots after of wear from a year and they sent me 2 brand new pairs....I am a lifer for ever now
Damn this is frustrating I have three cobblers in my area and none of which will do this kind of work the only thing they will do is a half sole they have all told me they don't mess with pegs or re nailing a sole it's frustrating cobbling is a dying craft and the services some of them offer is diminishing I want a good cobbler
Living in a part of Los Angeles heavily represented by Latino immigrants, has provided access to coblers with old world expertise in a modern sprawl. Most large American cities have a concentration of immigrants with skills, sometimes, lost to the modern urban reality.
I just bought The Jackson and waiting for them to arrive. Happy to hear they are made well. I did just discover a brand that may be better, but they have a limited selection; Chisos might be worth checking out! They are a little more expensive than Tecovas but still less than popular brands like Luchesse. Maybe you can give them a review.
From 18:55 to 19:15 I would have thought that the new heals would have had opposing right and left rear tread. These boots appear to have two left heals to my eye. Maybe the vibrim heal only comes one way. Other than that, they look fantastic! Great work!
I love boots. Ropers, etc, but I do not like high heals at all. Makes me feel like I'm walking down hill. I like a 1 inch heal max. Maybe 1 1/4". 1st think I do when I get a pair of boots I like the feel of....I take them to the cobbler and have the heals lowered. Then I feel like I'm walking flat and it's better on my spine. Lol Like those tacovas, they still make the heals a bit high even on there roper style which I way I haven't got a pair yet. Usually I get wedge sole boots now. My back hurts way way less 😁 As usual, great vid y'all
I tell you... Please don't let that little piece of plastic ruin it for you. I have two pairs - and they rival my Luccassee boots in looks and comfort. The CORK, I had no idea they did that, and they "walk" like house slippers. Give them a try - don't worry about that plastic bit. :)
@@cantiflas777 I own a pair and couldn't be happier! You can pay a lot more and get a lot less boot! The morning I ordered mine I ran across a similar boot. They were bragging about their eighty step hand made process. Tecovas have a two hundred step hand made process. My Tecovas cost $275. The others were asking $750!!
This video is 2 yrs old and yet it sold another pair of Tecovas. I don't wear cowboy boots but their chelsea boot model "Chance" looked interesting. Roughout Rust suede ordered. Also planning to send you my Thursday Cavalier chelsea for resole. Sent you guys pics via email.
Thanks for this video! I'm considering buy a pair of the tecovas. I'm looking at the "cartwright" ,it's a calf leather traditional boot. It's nice to see how they are put together.
This Tecovas are crafted in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, this is the most important city leather wise in Mexico. Some other great shoe brands are produced there, like Cuadra, Varonte, or Duque Di Galliano.
And the stacked leather heels on tecovas boots appear to be made of uniform thickness layers instead of one or more angular upper layers as in most traditional cowboy high heel boots, which give the heel a slight slant instead of an abrupt step. Another reason Cuero's seem to be more traditional. A detail most wouldn't notice or know of. But I've only had the Cuero's for 2 days. I'll see how they hold up.
👍Good stuff. I’m ignorant, just found your channel & it’s really something to watch! So many things I don’t understand. Nails in bottom of shoes??!! How do they not end up working through to the foot??? Thanks for the videos. Hope I get an answer. 👍✌️🇺🇸
Really enjoy your videos & reviews of shoes and boots. Just watched and agree with your review of the shoes to NOT buy in 2020 but now I'd like to see your review of some affordable, quality shoes that we should buy, it would be very helpful. I like my Allen Edmonds but have given up on Cole Haan, Florsheim, Johnson & Murphy and especially some of the less expensive shoes which I've had and consider uncomfortable junk.
Great video! Getting to see you take the boot apart and talk about it was very informative. Have you ever worked on a Cuero boot? I've been told they are mimicking the Tecovas but at a cheaper price point. I've seen reviewers that have held each and said they seem to be equal quality, but I've been wondering if they are constructed as good or if they are an inferior boot when taken apart. Thanks!
Believe me, they are! I put mine on on 5 August, and, aside from my bedroom slippers, I haven't worn anything else! I should probably give them a break, one of these days!
This is just what I wanted to see, thank you! I'm glad to know my Tecovas boots are well-made. Honestly, mine will be due for a resole pretty soon. What do you charge for a JR resole on cowboy boots, by the way?
I've had good luck with Los Altos. Los Altos has cork. I wear the square toes but they are still cut with a little more style and flare and very comfortable. I'm curious what a professional Cobbler thinks of them.
I have a set of tecovas and they are solid very good quality boots, but the issue is they are solely a boutique brand. They don't make a pair of boots I could work in without shedding a tear. I'm sure they would hold up but they are just either styled inappropriately or too nice to scratch.
I don't know what the hell you are doing, but man it's awesome! I came across this because I'm considering a pair of Tecovas. I haven't worn boots for 30 years and I want a good boot, but don't wan t to spend a fortune.
I stumbled upon a local Austin brand called Alvies. They are a sell direct like Tecovas but way better quality. I own two pairs and they built like a tank. They are good value for your money.

Really like your work. I’m a tecovas boot wearer and really like my boots (ropers). When the time comes for repair work I’ll be looking your shop up.
This man in my not so humble opinion is an artisan, I learn a lot about shoes and boots from him
Pure artistry. Thanks for the vid.
Thank you, Brett! We really appreciate it.
Outstanding I was wondering about Tacova boots. Thank from San Antonio
(I tend to buy a simple, basic shoe and nothing too 'trendy" - I can wear them for years without fashion regrets)
One exception is Doc Martens.
I have worn these for years and I have yet to purchase a pair that not only broke in very quickly but also gave me years of consistent wear. For $140 I think that they are a great bargain and one of the few brands that actually look pretty cool if you aren't the most disciplined when it comes to regular shoe shining.
12:37 so thats what they were doing to the Droids in Jabbas palace in Return of the Jedi...
Great insight! I always wondered about that😁
😂😂😂
That is a nice resole job!!! When my Tecova's need some work I may send them to you...
21 people didn't like this review? What more do those people want?
I'd been seeing Ad's for Tecovas boots for a while now (I think I even randomly got a catalog in the mail) and had been wondering if they really where the quality they where claiming. Glad to see this video and get a informed answer from someone who can really tell the quality. Probably going to really consider Tecovas for my next pair of boots.
I own a pair of suede Tacovas they fet like house shoes right out the box. had mine about 2 years now and they are awesome.
Very cool. Love my pair, sadly they had an issue with the shank so I'm getting a new pair.
Once I put my Anderson Beans on I havent taken them off. Never had anything fit on my foot so well. Oh and they are damn good lookin.
you should air them out.
This upcoming weekend I'm going to go purchase me a pear of Tecovas boots. 255 bux it expensive to me but this video helped make up my mined even more.
You are very skilled...I can appreciate what you do
I can't decide if I want to get Tecova's or Montana's it's nice to know the Tecova's are a quality boot if that's what I decide on.
Tecovas are mass-produced junk.
Everything nowadays is mass produced moron
@@oscaru5342 Yeah, that's why I own three pair of custom boots. Right. You don't know shit about boots, son.
@@mikeholley5662 No, they’re not
I got a pair of ropers in calf leather from the "defect" sale they held in Houston and I can't find the defect, they look beautiful, and they are super comfortable. Probably the most comfortable shoes that I own.
I stand by my Tecovas...unbelievable quality and are right up there with more expensive boots. Customer service wise...they go outta their way to make sure you are Satisfied. Great video btw.
Same!
I have a pair of pecan full quill ostrich. Love them.
i am in the market for a pair of cowboy boots. i haven't had a pair in 12 years . your video gives a lot of info. i too have been thinking of a tecovas. im glad to hear your opinion, that tecovas is a pretty good boot, constructed well. - you are a professional - good job, thanks. JDS/CT 12-5-19
I bought my 1st 2 pair of boots to small.....I ordered the 3rd pair" wide" OMG what a difference////I called the company and ask for a discount if I bought the other 2 as a "wide"....To may amazement.....i returned those small boots after of wear from a year and they sent me 2 brand new pairs....I am a lifer for ever now
I'd love to see a tear down of Cuero boots and how they compare.
Love the craftsmanship. It is art.
I just got a nice used pair of Tony lamas for $7 at savers lol. They're so comfortable.
Damn this is frustrating I have three cobblers in my area and none of which will do this kind of work the only thing they will do is a half sole they have all told me they don't mess with pegs or re nailing a sole it's frustrating cobbling is a dying craft and the services some of them offer is diminishing
I want a good cobbler
Living in a part of Los Angeles heavily represented by Latino immigrants, has provided access to coblers with old world expertise in a modern sprawl. Most large American cities have a concentration of immigrants with skills, sometimes, lost to the modern urban reality.

Great video and visited your website and found out you’re in my backyard - Nashville is the place to be - hope to be your customer one day soon
Great work!
Very impressed with your work! Craftsmanship, the only way to describe what you do.. thank you man; nicely done!
Frank from Boulder, Colorado
I love boots. Ropers, etc, but I do not like high heals at all. Makes me feel like I'm walking down hill. I like a 1 inch heal max. Maybe 1 1/4". 1st think I do when I get a pair of boots I like the feel of....I take them to the cobbler and have the heals lowered. Then I feel like I'm walking flat and it's better on my spine. Lol
Like those tacovas, they still make the heals a bit high even on there roper style which I way I haven't got a pair yet. Usually I get wedge sole boots now. My back hurts way way less 😁
As usual, great vid y'all
So sad they use plastic, I wanted to buy some, I should probably buy Montana boots better, thank you it was a very helpful review!
I tell you... Please don't let that little piece of plastic ruin it for you. I have two pairs - and they rival my Luccassee boots in looks and comfort. The CORK, I had no idea they did that, and they "walk" like house slippers. Give them a try - don't worry about that plastic bit. :)
@@rl4795 thank you very much!
its waterproofs the main sole
I’d like to see you guys repair some ariat boots as well ..repairing work boots would be a good segment
Ariats are cheep crap mostly made in Red China... do yourself a favor and throw them out and get yourself some Mexican or American made boots
This Tecovas are crafted in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, this is the most important city leather wise in Mexico. Some other great shoe brands are produced there, like Cuadra, Varonte, or Duque Di Galliano.
I just got their Banderas in Chocolate Bison great boots. They are 3/4 or 270 Goodyear welted.
I recently found your channel. Love the awesome content you're putting together. Another great video guys! 😊
They definitely do seem well made, if I didn't prefer a normal traditional work boot style I might try some.
Love your channel guys, I’ll be sending y’all a pair of my cowboy boots to get re-soled soon!
I just picked up a pair of tacova Docs in Bison when I was in Austin. I'm hoping I made the right decision.
Really enjoy your video(s), I found it very informative and entertaining for footwear aficionados like me, keep up the good work guys, thanks!
Budi Permana Thank you very much! We really appreciate you watching.
Love the video......I’m convinced on tacova quality now...thanks so much!
I bought the alligators midnight black, I’m going back for that belt.
I have 3 pair, with number 4 on order. Great boots!
Thanks!
Bought my first pair today, hope they're as good as everyone and their mother says they are
Believe me, they are! I put mine on on 5 August, and, aside from my bedroom slippers, I haven't worn anything else! I should probably give them a break, one of these days!
Mine came in yesterday I wore them around the house. I love them!!
I just bought my second pair 2 days ago if that tells you how I feel.
@@TXbeats62 Did you get the free belt?
Sure did
This is just what I wanted to see, thank you! I'm glad to know my Tecovas boots are well-made. Honestly, mine will be due for a resole pretty soon. What do you charge for a JR resole on cowboy boots, by the way?
We have boot options on our website now. Www.potterandsons.com
Is this boots works for Indias shepherds??plzz tell me sir
alexander krishnadevaraya yes dude
I've had good luck with Los Altos. Los Altos has cork. I wear the square toes but they are still cut with a little more style and flare and very comfortable. I'm curious what a professional Cobbler thinks of them.
I have a set of tecovas and they are solid very good quality boots, but the issue is they are solely a boutique brand. They don't make a pair of boots I could work in without shedding a tear. I'm sure they would hold up but they are just either styled inappropriately or too nice to scratch.
Fantastic video. Really informative. What is the cost of a resole ?
Used to buy these boots at the flea market on 290 tween Austin and Manor!
I don't know what the hell you are doing, but man it's awesome! I came across this because I'm considering a pair of Tecovas. I haven't worn boots for 30 years and I want a good boot, but don't wan t to spend a fortune.
Have a pair myself. Outstanding boots!
I stumbled upon a local Austin brand called Alvies. They are a sell direct like Tecovas but way better quality. I own two pairs and they built like a tank. They are good value for your money.
