A few years ago, I was penny broke. Every month I made a big shopping haul at the Dollar Store and 99 Cent Store that would ultimately lead to an overdraft fee-but I had food for the month. Not the best food, but it was always a nice feeling having food in the fridge.
Chrissy XG Since you said this was years ago, sounds like you’re in a better financial position now. Good for you. ❤️
My mom always said " as long as you have food in your cupboard, all other problems are easy to solve"..I'm so blessed, I've always had food in my cupboard...
Probably over payed for most of it, but still if it's only place to shop in your neighbor hood understandable
Thats tuff
I had the same situation about a year ago. Hard times makes for even harder food lol. I hope you are in a better financial place now!
As someone who has been homeless, bathing in gas stations restroom sinks, sleeping in my 78 LTD...eating a “cheap meat” was a blessing.
I learned a lot from that time of my life (2000-2001).
April Manint hope you've found better times friend
i hope you’re doing better now too
April Manint sounds like you are doing better! I’m happy for you! I bet it made you a better person!
April Manint amen I was homeless for two years and anything that was edible was a blessing
Lady Lucinda I hope you’re doing really well now, respect to you and the person who made the comment 💕
I am a butcher, this looks to be actually a ribeye, however there are some cows that are better than other, most likely came from a not too well fed or taken care of cattle. Also it looks closer to the chuck cut of beef not the ribeye, as these two connect and one eventually becomes the other
Your a butcher? I bet you prolly work at Walmart
@@thepest354 prolly..... whats that? With your grammar you probably couldn't even get a job at Walmart

I grew up very poor, to the point that I can remember sleeping in our running car in the winter to stay warm because the gas for the car was cheaper than the kerosene we used for our one heater in the living room. My mom would buy these occasionally and they were an absolute treat for us. My mom always called them "minute steaks."
are you doing better now?
@@erikbest5371 I am, thank you so much for asking!
@@lindseystraley9596 that’s great to hear!
Glad to hear your doing better, thats awesome! Im still working on it lol, so for now anyways, dollar store steaks and corned beef hash are staples...
Hope everything is better now ❤️
Imagine being a cow and then being slaughtered just to be turned into a dollar store steak. What a shame.
Damn smh
you people slay me i’m having a cow 😂🤣
yea im not vegan (yet?) but it's honestly disgusting how we disrespect meat and in turn, animals too. meat is overproduced and way too cheap. that's without mentioning the gross ways it's mass produced as well
Big White Cock and it’s most likely scrap meat they don’t want to waste
It's probably just left over meats made to look like a steak using meat glue. Youd be surprised how many meat products sold in name grocery stores also use meat glue lol
You guys need to realize that even though this is $1, people are poor. And they buy this. To stay fed.
lame excuse. if you're poor buy rice and frozen chicken breasts. not dollar store ribeyes.

Exactly, a portion of my childhood we were pretty poor
buy a big bag or rice and a big bag of beans not dollar tree meat xD
This obviously was NOT a condemnation of dollar stores' usefulness to lower income families nor a reflection of homelessness in America.
It was a taste test. Not to be politicized. Just a simple taste test.
That's all.
Mike Ruslander thank you
Dollar Stores aren’t even as cheap is advertized. Most of the time when buying frozen meals and meat from the dollar store, you’re actually paying for mainly water, and salt. It doesn’t matter how poor you are, you can afford things from the supermarket, don’t think that just because you’re poor you have to settle for food, that 1. Isn’t safe to eat. and 2. is actually less meat than solution.
"NO YOU!"

I have a dollar store close to where I work and where I live. I have seen some steak in there that looks so thin it is almost see through webbing. Some items are just not a good deal but some are outstanding. We have a lot of homeless people in our area who are surviving because of the good deals they can find at the store, buns and hotdogs, six packs of fruit, jars of peanut butter and loaves of bread. All easily eaten without being able to chew as many do not have teeth that can support chewing. I was thrilled to see quarts of milk the other day in the store. God bless the dollar store, friend of families and people who are in need and savvy shoppers..
marie lynne I'm not poor but I don't have money to waste. I've been buying everything possible from dollar general. After a year of this, I'm realizing how much further my pay goes when I pay 1.00 for something that costs 2.00 or more at Kroger.

My god, being poor in a rich country is just a special kind of suckage.
MrQuijibo Being poor in a poor 3rd world shithole is worse. Let’s not turn the states into one.
Only the Rich and Powerful favors America.. The middle working class is the poorest and the most taxed.. We are slaves here for other people and the govt..
@@kysike666 no way dude
It is, however, interesting that so many people want to migrate to your country because they believe everything there is so wonderful. Soon after arriving they discover things are not as they expected but most cannot go back to their home countries and are stuck in the States. That, in turn, drives them to take jobs they would not normally take and they work hard to get out of the doldrums they have got into. Some do not and either leave or ???
'nuf sed.
ToeJam TV you gotta admit, the working class gets fucked so hard here in the us. obviously it's a better situation than probably most countries, but some people can't even afford to take a day off to tend to their sick child. oh and an 8 dollars/hour minimum wage is disgustingly low for such a rich country.
As someone who is DEATHLY ALLERGIC to pineapple, thank you for mentioning the Bromelain. I wasn't yet curious enough about this steak to buy it but it was going to happen eventually. You saved me from making a deadly mistake. (I wouldn't have looked at the ingredients thinking it's only steak...)
Imagine dying to a dollar steak
so when i was younger, my mom would buy really cheap meat, scraps and stuff from the butcher. we weren't poor, but she had grown up poor, so a lot of the creations she made came from her upbringing. she would have taken this steak (because i have noooo doubts my mom would have gotten all our food at dollar tree if there had been one around!!) and chopped it up really fine and mixed it with rice and tomato sauce and spices. She'd make that dish with any random meat she bought from the butcher. And man was it good! i never had the chance to grow up picky because she'd feed us all kinds of random things and we just thought it was totally normal!
Caylie Carter Sounds like you have an amazing Mom!!😀
Caylie Carter I was gonna say, to me that looks like perfect steak for a delicious cheesesteak!!!
Caylie Carter meat from the butcher is completely different from what this is. may from the butcher is just meat and hasn't been treated. this on the other hand has had stuff done to it to make it seem better to the average person. being able to cook with what you have is a talent the most people don't poses. I bet your mother would be able to do better if this piece of meat wasn't treated, than if it was treated with whatever they did to it.
Caylie Carter same here
Meat from the butcher is very different than prepackaged cheap steaks from a random factory.
Looks suspicious to me...

Emmy I love your food reviews! First because of your personality and second because of how you describe the color texture, flavor, etc. And not just saying its good and calling it a day!
might be "meat glue" meat. left over scraps "glued" together to mimic a particular cut.
Most likely. Meat glue is just an plant based enzyme that breaks down meat and binds them together which in THEORY does not sound bad. But you are meshing together god only knows what and odds are they dont get their meat scraps from the same place so you do not know how old all the meat is and you are binding all that weirdness together to make one piece of meat. You highly risk cross contamination cause you are taking all these random meat scraps that are god only knows how old and making a steak.
azucarmorena5000
Yeah ya right.
Cheap Cooking Channel Well, yeah. Media portrays the glue as scarier than the meat parts itself, from what ive seen.
It doesn't look like any ribeye I've seen.

I remember when I was very poor and had to come up with dinners to feed four for five and under, so I would buy two of those steaks cut them into cubes and add potatoes, carrots, celery, onion, spices (from dollar tree of course lol) and a couple of bouillon cubes with some water and make beef stew in the crockpot with those dollar store steaks. When you are poor you had to get really creative. And since I cooked it in the crockpot it was not that bad it tasted pretty good just the beef was not the main thing in the stew, more like an 'accent' but it was hearty and fed four people and cost four bucks to make. But when your poor and you need to eat you do what you gotta do. Would I eat these if I had a choice NOW...no. Because by themselves they don't taste good but if you add them in something they are not bad.
Cheap Cooking Channel u
I would do the same

I tell ya...
When your on a fixed income you will appreciate the food that comes from Dollar stores. I have ate those steaks. I wa glad to get them.
I find much better savings/quality when I purchase the foods on sale/clearance at the traditional grocery store. I think that is the point of most people here criticizing the highly overpriced $1 store steak, pumped with water and chemicals. Why wouldn't people choose cheaper and higher quality fresh meats?
Gia Barrone agree that steak is overpriced for a dollar more like 20 cents at the most
@@giabarrone7422 exactly. I buy food from Dollar Tree every week but steak is not on that list.
The dollar store seasoning and sauce make them much better.
These steaks are actually not bad when thawed and grilled. My kids ate it all up and asked for more. They even preferred them over a nice, thick ribeye.
Somebody else who did this got sick after making their taste test video for it. Hope that wasn't the case for you, too!
Ritchie those people exaggerate to make us watch and talk about their videos.
Herman Pesina I think I saw that one. It was obviously very gray and rotten, but he ate a few bites anyway. He was only a little miffed that the dollar store still thought it was okay to sell it to people even though they must have known, since the packaging is clear. He should have been more dramatic about it honestly.
omg why would he eat rotten meat?? Like, doesn't your life matter more than a piece of dead flesh?
OxygenPeople The video was about testing this item and commenting on the quality, and that is what he did. People would have complained if he didn't at least taste it. I think he was holding out hope that it wasn't really as bad as it looked.
You need to re-watch that video. He cooked the Stampede Steak and a "Regular" Thick Steak.
The regular steak was so rare, it still had blood and water in it. For all you know it was that one that got him sick.

People who judge this 1) don't understand being truly poor and 2) have high expectations from something that only costs a dollar. Some of us can only afford things like this. The general rule for really cheap cuts of meat is cook it in the oven.
If you can only afford that you should put that dollar towards something a little healthier. I grew up dirt poor, red meat was maybe once a month if we were very lucky. That money went towards cheap things like rice and beans. You should budget better and work harder. Also, if you think its a good idea to put a 1/8 inch piece of meat in the oven, you shouldn't be allowed to cook meat ever.

Your advice is amazing!!!!!! And your voice is so soft it’s like asmr I love it!!!!
Emmy, I am in vet school. I believe that this is a ribeye. It probably comes from a very old animal, either a dairy cow or a bull that was used for breeding purposes. As animals age, their muscles gain more connective tissue, which causes toughness. The age of the animal probably explains the need to tenderize the meat. For those worried about the treatment of the animals that become dollar store steaks, US law requires that animals be inspected before slaughter. Sick animals or those that are unable to walk properly are not allowed to be used for human consumption. In the US, there are many laws in place that help protect animals from the despicable people who would do them harm.
Amy, have you ever visited a slaughter house or a horse glue factory. Pretty dispiriting and cruel. You would find it definitely despicable.
@@sondar2000 Also considering we're not even allowed to film slaughter houses anymore without being criminally prosecuted and that inspections of these slaughter houses never occurs... I find it really astonishing anyone would put faith in these so called laws. Let alone a veterinarian.
I'm gonna go with meat glue.... not actually rib eye. Which is scraps mixed together and vacuumed, it would explain the variation in textures and cuts of meat in one steak.
@@myabean04 That's what I was thinking.

If it's from Canada that could be true. But in the states it would be illegal. Which is stupid as well. I'm told horse is really not that bad.
NinjaNeroRain Horse meat is a delicacy in some countries.
Jessica I have heard that. In Canada some restaurants started serving it. Customers repeat orders. Also my mother tell me in the late 60's and early 70's do to the price of beef, you could buy it half beef half horse mix in the U.S. But you know the activist. They even made a movie back then about the cruel killing of horses. Of course now a days there are so many horses out west that they just starve to death. Good job activist. Morons.
I remember a foreign exchange student when I was in high school talk about she was ready to go home so she could eat horse. I can't remember what country she was from. At one point people were accusing Jack in the Box of serving kangaroo meat in their burgers. It was good kangaroo if they were doing that.

These steaks are awesome for the price. The secret is to cook them on a lower temperature with some butter and a dash of garlic powder.
I normally buy a bunch and cook them up in the morning with some eggs and toast/biscuits.
If you buy a bunch you may as well just buy a thick cut of ribeye, price per oz will probably be the same once you get rid of the solution
@@callum3271 This is true, but that means I would have to cook the entire thing at once, where opposed I can feed myself three or four times by getting the cheap, thin ones.
The biggest reason for their price is how thin they are, but seasoning them the right way plays a lot into both their flavor and tenderness.
Their also great in salads and for when you want something different to jerky or Slim Jims.
@@freedomlover9560 slice real ribeye yourself and freeze them in separate portions, good quality frozen meat will be much better than that stuff

Hi!😃 I just wanted to share that I have bought those steaks a few times before and I un-thawed them first and rinsed them off and lightly seasoned them because they are very thin and they were actually very flavorful, just so you know that you're always suppose to let your meat sit out to room temperature before cooking because it will shock the neat and take away the flavor and the natural juice that it displays but, I never paid attention to the ingredients which is bad that I didn't but, the steaks were good with some A1 steak sauce, scrambled eggs, home fried potatoes and toast, coffee and juice but, now that you have broken it down to us, I might not purchase those anymore but, I'm still amongst the living so whatever they are it didn't kill me, (LOL) but,Thank you for sharing though. You're very brave to try these different things but just be careful.
Wow. So much ESL.
So you froze the already frozen steaks? Doesn't make much sense.
I'm not sure if that's a good idea, just in terms of hygiene. If that steak thawed for a short while during shipping there could be all kinds of germs in there and you don't really want to give them an opportunity to breed in the steak by giving them a nice, long pause at room temperature before disinfecting the thing with heat.
You shouldn’t have to put A1 on a ribeye.
Crazy Sniffable Why people feel the need to put other people down for no good reason is beyond me. She shared her experience with all of us, and regardless of your opinion on her grammar, I’m sure you understood every bit of it. Hope you feel better about yourself for your unnecessarily rude comment, then at least some good comes from it.

We shared a steak between the 4 of us, too, accompanied by a salad and 2 sides. Worked out fine. I'd share a good steak before eating dollar store "meat" from who knows where. I'm glad it didn't make you sick. 🌻
I love your "I spent 30 minutes on my bedhead hairdo" I mean it, I really do.
It's true. She looks very cute.
A $9 steak serving four people ? Not in my house
$20 steak feeds 6 people in mine
Jeffery Downs I think she eats healthily. That’s a normal sized portion in a lot of areas of the world.
$9 steak feeds 4 people. That explains why Im over weight
Joey V why on earth are you so pissed? And why aren’t you speaking proper English? Hahah i can’t even understand you. I’m saying that her portions are small. You go to Japan, France, Australia (some parts now cater to American tourists and have huge portions, but they used to all be very small portions) etc.. I’m surprised this isn’t common knowledge. Our stomachs are the size of our fist. That means our meals don’t need to be any larger than that.
Oh look, a knowledgeable response with zero swear words. Ps, swearing everywhere in your comment doesn’t make your response correct. You sound really unintelligent.
Two adults and two toddlers though not four adults
I feel bad for the cows that died to be sold for a dollar
Canh Nguyen true and it's sad cuz cows are so smart they are meant for something better
Canh Nguyen where can I get an entire cow for a dollar? Here in the US you get just the garbage cut of meat in the video, perhaps 0.1% of the cow at most by mass.
they probably died 15 years ago which is why it's so cheap
Canh Nguyen you know,it's probably not even cow lmao
yarixza mendoza cow ... Smart ... Are you .... ?
Dense , cows will walk right up to slaughter without hesitation
fingers crossed you don't get sick like the other reviewer's
Khanallie milo not as bad as tasting that 20 yrs old mre. that was really worrying.
Bricolage Fantasy2 you know what I think I agree on that because this is just frozen dollar store meat but that mre has been shelved for sooo long
+Khanallie milo I'd rather eat the mre
AMARAT101 😂😂
Khani Xia i actually eat these with no problem , I'm not sure why the other reviewers get sick ,but I've had these several different times with no ill effects
props for mentioning wolfpit!!! great video
Lmao my mom and I grilled some of these when there was a blackout for about two days..they weren’t bad.
Emmy, do you still need people to put subtitles on your videos? I would love to put on some spanish subtitles, most of the time i want to show your videos to my family but they don't understand english, so that would help a lot.
Yeah, I always need help! 😃 You can find the contributor's link in the description box of each video. There's also a general link here: ruclips.net/user/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UCzqbfYjQmf9nLQPMxVgPhiA&tab=2 Thanks!
emmymadeinjapan Thank you so much, i will work on some subtitles now, you're very sweet and i love your videos.
I'd say, as a butcher, that the grade of the beef is poor and the fact that it is sliced really thin. Plus the addition of the brine will affect the taste.
John Lucas best way to brag about bieng a butcher.
As one too that was my thought. Ungraded, wouldn't be surprised if it was lower than Standard when you get to stuff used for hamburger or even dog food. (And for those that don't know meats in these lower grades are safe for human consumption, just very low quality which is why it was reserved for lower quality products.)
If it was made out of the "meat glue" as suggested by others (or any other kind of meat) the packaging labeling would have to say so. The "meat glue" would've stood out as a long, bizarre, chemical name or some other call-out saying it's contained within it. And of all the things it's used for, I doubt a cheap food-producing company could use it to manufacture a "ribeye steak" that looks that much like one.
It's likely an end cut from a very low-grade of beef. Technically edible but just not worth eating.
I'm not a butcher but even my common senses are telling me that. This is you get what you pay for.
When I saw this recommendation, I thought it was a video from TheWolfePit at first. Pretty cool since I'm a fan of both channels.
I thought I was clicking on a Wolfe Pit video! Glad you shouted him out, lmao
people think everything from that store is bad quality just because of its name and the prices it offers... it's the company that's selling it ... not the store.
It's just a bad, potentially lethal product, the price has nothing to do with it. Ground beef costs the same, if not cheaper and no one complains about that.
The stores are pretty bad too
Emmy is the new #saltbae. LOL
C H R I S S A R A V I A: Yasss lol
😎
Made this steak today with Emmy’s ramen recipe. Fried the steak w some Montreal Steak seasoning. Then did the noodles, veggies, mushroom. The steak wasn’t bad. A inferior cut of beef. A little chewy but not bad at all. If I was hard up, I’d buy these.
I was always curious how those dollar store steaks would be, now I know.
would love to see you try a legitimate Kobe beef steak.
Armando the wanderer That would require her to source the beef from Japan.
Leah Laushway you and I both know that if anyone could she has the influence 😆
Armando the wanderer ...the odds are almost non exist that she can... there are only 10 places in the usa that acrually sell kolby beef... its ALL fake stuff and uses labels as marketing.
google it... and snoop test it... its true
I'm down
Armando the wanderer CAN'T! The USDA has never approved it for importation due to the japanese slaughtering methods! I try and tell people that there paying ridiculous prices for something in name only!
Its a ribeye. Its a thin cut from a crappy animal probably a utility grade animal. Thats why its only a dollar. Ribeyes are tender if they are choice or prime. Once you get down to good or utility, you loose a lot of tenderness.
Its really a ribeye. Its just a bad one. It might have a little chuck on it if it was cut off the end of the rib.
That could explain the difference in taste. But it probanly just a crappy steak.
If you want ribeye flavor on a budget get chuck eye. Ask you meat cutter for them. They get them off the chuck right where it meets the rib and its the same thing as a ribeye. They only get like two to four off a shoulder but they are cheaper by a bit.
metamorphicorder you hit the nail on the head. A chuck eye is known as a butchers special. A tender delicious cut of meat but is not going to break your bank
Lovely. Sometimes good cuts of meat are hiding where people just don't want to look.
Tbh this actually good if you thaw it out and season it well I recommend it to anyone especially if relying on a thin budget I had and it doesn’t taste like cardboard
em my son and i got hooked on these dollar store adventures you need to brinnnng them back. 🤦🏻♂️🤙
Emmy has a iron stomach.
The fact that an animal had to die just to be turned into a dollarstore steak
I FOUND THE VEGAN
Ashlee Bee lol
Vegan spotted
I just thinks it might come right from a laboratory, must be like a new type of plastic really.
It's not about being, i guess she meant that at less if you kill and animal be sure to do it in a good way to have quality food
That's the type of meat that has to be marinated for a bit before cooking.
I love that she always gives er inspirations a mention
I love the wolf pit, awesome to see you mention him and everything in your video.
It's cheaper to buy a medium priced steak and slice it that thin! would taste better too
ah, I love your hard times cooking vids.
The one i bought was tender. I added steak seasoning, and worcestershire sauce. Both from the dollar tree as well. It made all the diffrence for flavor and was a plesant meal. I recently bought twelve, to help shelter in place, and i think a diffrent sauce and seasoning combo will keep it fresh experiance each time i eat it.
Hey Emmy! I think the technique of frying the steak frozen has the same principle as cryo-fried steak, where they cooked the steak sou-vide style first so the inside is tender and cooked, then freeze it using liquid nitrogen and after the steak is frozen, the steak is fry in a really hot oil for several seconds/minutes just to caramelize the surface. The article you gave also shows that the frozen steak maintains the caramelization on the outside without overcooking the inside just like cryo-frying. You should search it up in RUclips, its really cool! 😊
Can you do a video eating natto. I saw that many people make it into this big meal adding egg and green onions and it looks amazing.
Natto is one of my favorite things to have for breakfast and here's an old video on how I eat it: ruclips.net/video/bf4egUzD2ZQ/видео.html
I remember being so poor as a kid, we would have to pawn things in our home, look for change in the couch and around the house, just to go buy $1 cheeseburgers at Mcdonald's. It wasn't ideal, but I had my mother and she made everything much better than what it was. Sometimes you hit hard times, and you must do what you have to. I think it's actually convenient that dollar stores have cuts of meat like this. Once again it's not ideal, but it's food.
I was waiting you to add salt in saltbae style
Erşad Kaya What style?
Phil Nolan there's this trending topic #saltbae and he's a cook from Turkey who salts his steak in an interesting way.
Angie Nguyen Strange name.
Phil Nolan that isn't his real name
Andrew Fan I assumed.
I would prob just use that steak (tiny pieces) for a veggie beef soup to make it softer while cooking in the liquid. Or not buy it at all. Lol. Thanks for the tip. 👍✌🏻
I'm with you Emmy! I actually did try it and was quite disappointed.
I am a new subscriber. I love your videos! And I have to say. You have some guts eating some of the stuff you do. Lol. I am not a picky eater. But when it comes to some of the stuff you eat. I won't think twice about even touching it. 😂😂🤣🤣
Emmy, you must have a cast-iron gut. I admire that! I won't even eat corn.
not another theatre trash channel You can't even digest it? So what's the point of eating it lol. I mean it's tasty but I see no point of eating.
Sorceress Rose
actually you digest the inside of it. the corn you see in your poop is the outer kernel. it looks whole but it's not. think about when you chew it. you don't just swallow it whole
