    Hi, maybe I am too stupid, but I still can't really make sense of this. My MyHeritage ethnicity estimate has me as approxomately 38 % Scandinavian, 23 % East European, 21 % North- and West European and 18 % Balkan. Yet the three genetic groups listed additionally further down on the page are 1."England and Ireland", 2."Germany, France (Grand Est), Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Netherlands" and 3. "Germany". Now these groups have only very few geographical overlaps with my Ethnicities. How can one make sense of this?

      Thanks for watching 😊 I'm sure you aren't stupid, this is all new technology that we are learning! Groups are not the same as ethnicity, but people in your groups will share bits of your DNA. So for example, if you are 23% East European, and have genetic groups in England or Germany, it could be because some other people with East European heritage have migrated to those places. So you might share DNA with English or German people because you all descend from an Eastern European population further back in history. The groups just mean that you share common ancestry with people who live in those regions. Does that answer your question?

    I have some from Japan and Thailand from around 1650, does that mean that they were my ancestors?

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland  10 месяцев назад

      Could be! But remember to do research using records to be sure. Ethnicity estimates aren't always perfectly accurate. Thanks for watching :)

    Have you a very distant South Italian ancestor as far as you know? And are you from Scotland?

    • @VanessaBland

      As far as I know, I have no South Italian ancestry! I cannot explain why it's there. I'm from Australia but I have lots of Scottish ancestors. Thanks for the comment :)

      @@VanessaBland Well, at least your Greek result must comes from when Ancient Greeks and Celtics of Scotland met friendly in Britain and made a lot of wonderful cultural exghange and, probably, some Greek mixed with our Celtic Ancenstors! :D 🇬🇷❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🙏 so you should love so much Greece too my dear distant Greek sister! 🖤

      @@sicilian845 Yes, I'm not certain where my Greek came from either but you may be right that it's from the more ancient past. I absolutely adore Greece so I would consider myself blessed to have Greek ancestry 💙 Thanks for your lovely comment!

    I had a high confidence genetic group in Yemen but no family members who had that ethnicity it tells me that one of my ancestors was born, married or pasted away there is there a way I can find out more about this genetic group?

    • @VanessaBland

      Interesting. I don't know much about Yemen history myself but if I were you I'd just try googling and see what you might learn through blogs and websites. Good luck!

    I have a question my alleged dad is Cuban he’s white I got my results and it says I am 16.8 % Iberian, 7.1 Baltic and 8.5 Scandinavian the rest is African. Do you think he’s my dad?

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland  3 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for the comment! I don't think an ethnicity estimate will give you the answer you need. I'm not an expert on Cuba but I believe the population is quite diverse so it's possible. A DNA test from him, or one of his close relatives (does he have other children, or brothers and sisters etc) would tell you whether you match. Good luck and sorry I don't have a definite answer.

    My only high confidence group is English West Midlands, though i have no english DNA, I am a GreekCypriot with admixtures of middle eastern dna. How can this be possible?

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland  4 года назад +2

      The genetic groups are just gathering together people who are distant cousins and predicting where they might all have come from using their combined family trees. So it is probably true that you are strongly related to this cluster of people, but perhaps you are related through different branches (i.e. perhaps they also share some mediterranean or middle eastern heritage, or perhaps one of your distant relatives travelled to England at some point in time, there are many possibilities!). I hope this helps! Thanks for the comment :)

    Hi Vanessa, nice video :) I want to ask you something. I also got my results yesterday and it told me that I'm 100 % Western Asian & North African which is really not that accurate. I also do have some Middle Eastern and Greek roots. I also made a dna test from myheritage 1 year ago. Tbh I think it isn't uploaded 100 % yet. If you download your DNA and click at the Excel data, how many written rows do you have?

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland  4 года назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for the comment :) I don't have excel on my computer so it probably doesn't look the same as yours (mine loads in a notepad sort of file). Maybe just try deleting the file and starting again. It should download pretty quickly, it isn't a huge file. If you don't think the ethnicity is very accurate, I'd suggest uploading the data to other sites and comparing, GEDmatch might be a good one. Thanks for watching and good luck!

    The genetic groups are really horrible for black Americans- it can’t tell you, for some reason, anything about your European ancestry or genetic groups if you’re a multicultural black American.

    • @VanessaBland
      @VanessaBland  3 года назад +2

      Really? What do the results say?
      It may be due to how far back the line goes. These tests usually don't go further than 6 generations back. Some Black Americans have probably been in America longer than 6 generations. Could this be the problem?
