3 FRONT ARM ATTACKS from the Philly Shell Stance

- Important offensive and defensive tactics for your front arm when using the Philly shell stance. It's common that many fighters spend too much time hiding behind the left shoulder that their left hand is never even a threat. With these tactics, your left hand can become much more of a threat even though it appears folded away or out-of-position.

takeaway tips:
1. keep ur HANDS LOOSE.
2. use BOTH SIDE TURNS
3. use FOOTWORK and WEIGHT behind the JAB.
hope it helped. excellent detailed vid.
In regards to your 1st point - Is a shell loose, or hard?
@@justseven3487depends on the situation if its calm your relaxed if ur getting flurried and punched you might tense up and be compact and backtrack
excellent tips, Johnny! I use the upper jab from that position all the time when I box and it works 100%!
Yes yes yes! It catches them so often and makes them hesitate, allowing your other punches to come in.
The older I get the more valuable this channel becomes , happy new year Jhonny
glad you appreciating these. so many nuances that make all the difference
Great video Johnny! Love them all. Johnny the latissimus dorsi muscle retracts the humerus bone. It's the pecs and delts that extend the humerus bone out to punch. Thank you so much for posting all your videos for us to learn from.
glad you like them!
Awesome video Johnny! Personally I'm not comfortable with the philly shell myself. I been boxing for over 10 years and I still feel the philly shell is a very advanced stance/style I have experimented with it and I have tried to get comfortable with it and it's just not for me. But I do like the info your teaching. Even from my conventional stance I would still use what you teach if it's possible to apply it to my stance/style. Also in this video I still learn something, like when you mentioned the philly shell fighters that only use the one way they turn and not the other, and how the opponent can easily get that position/angle behind there lead side. Now if I face a philly shell fighter in sparring or whatever ,I will look for that and take advantage of it. Therefore I still got something out of this video so I appreciate you taking the time to put this stuff out and we get to learn for free! Thank you Johnny for all you do. It is these videos and tutorials that your put out over the years that made me the boxer I am today. Even before I first walked in to a boxing gym, I learned fundamentals and basics to boxing from you, and I walked in to the boxing gym confident and comfortable because of what I have learned from you and of course I put in the practice and had partners to train and learn with. You impacted my life In the most positive way. I left a comment on another video of yours a while back explaining how your videos and boxing changed my life from a life of crime and drugs , to falling in love with boxing and you were like 1 of the only legit channels back then to learn from.and over the years you kept putting out videos and I learned and practiced. Now I'm clean and sober , out of the prison system , and my kids look up to me and see me train and box. I truly believe God puts things in our path for good reasons. I know this is a lot of writing for a comment, but I just wanted to remind you how important the things you posted and put out really are. and how you can change someone's whole life that you never met with the videos and tutorials you took the time and put out for us to learn for free. I think it's very important for you to know that too. So with all that, lol
Thank you and God bless you and yours bro
I use to box and kick box and now I teach and I wasn't taught the Shell Im self taught with the shell, and the Shell works better for me cause I'm quick and very fast, I mean the shell is mainly great for a speedy fighter than a power fighter, so if it's not meant for you don't do the style, do what's fits you.
All these are great options that you don't have to really think that much to execute except for the footwork. Another two I think work perfect with this stance is Flickers Jabs though you do get your arm close to tucking so something to be wary of. I try not to tuck it inside too much when popping them out but I have shorter arms so I can get away with it sometimes. Another Jab I love from this position mid Jab string. I love to keep my arm half extended stiff armed almost and just throw arm punches maybe with some body weight depending. This works well mid combination as a way to keep up pressure or back off safely. Since if you keep it half extended and return it to that position you can fire off jabs even faster than orthodox normally allows.
Though it saps power so you have to have a stone cold jab. Luckily I was born Southpaw but mainly fight in Orthodox Right Handed stances. And switch when desperate to confuse people since I've started to train southpaw more recently. Speaking of which I find while your not allowed to stiff arm people if you stiffen up right after a jab. Or fake jab it out and just leave it stiffen if you bait them to push forward they'll whiff unless they're strong as a bull and push through. I can also use this to pop them with a Counter Cross. Hooks and More so Uppercuts are also viable for this type of bait.
However these are advanced addons I wouldn't recommend for a new user. I could only apply these after I had decent mastery over multiple Shell Guard Styles from Peekaboo, High Guard, to Cross Guard, Low, Guard Long Guard, Thai Stance so on so forth. I find having extra tools like these are handy to have in your back pocket to frustrate people. Fencing Jabs like Lomachenko uses are another great Jab for both Defense, Offense, and Even Setups.
I find if you switch between these Jab types constantly and throw them out tirelessly it's nearly impossible to wade through and will frustrate even experienced opponents. Especially since each of these types of jabs all come at weird or odd angles from the standard. Even standard Philly Shell Jabs already pop from more below. Add more variation and it makes it ten times harder to deal with.
Great video. So much valuable information.
really glad you enjoyed this
Johhny man we love your videos !
Thank you, my friend!
Awesome tips, thanks johnny
Thanks Jonnhy! Grettins from México City, Master! Thanks for reading!😊😃
thank you! greetings from roma norte!
You are basically in and out with the footwork? That also brings everything else together? I'm still learning the Philly shell.
Great tutorial sir
Thanks and glad you like it.
Feel like this is some secret technique. appreciated that!! (as a new guy who wants totry boxing)
Thank you bro
glad you like it
Thanx!
Dope Video Man, gonna use these tips when I box for sure!! Awesome to see you filming this at Hill St Boxing Gym!!!
Question coach..
( on 4:20 left angel from slip)
do I need to step my lead foot? I felt off balanced when I try to slip to left side.
Tip toe lightly in a diagonal position. Move your foot about a half inch to the left
Nice video Johnny. From Philly if you fire the back hand you have to focus on that rear foot moving forward more, reach
Usually when I’m in Philly Shell, means my opponent is being aggressive and coming to me anyway so reach isn’t the biggest problem. IMO, if you need more reach on the right hand just square up your stance more.
So true
Man y u the best
Thank you so much, but can you get more Philly shell, I'm from Russia, sorry for my language
I’m not the expert on it, but I’ll try my best.
3:25 is how Mayweather Ko’d Hatton !
I think Malignaggi is also using Philyy shell
You've aged 10 years, Johnny, since the last time I saw you.
Yes, my friend. Time passes. And there were many years in between my shoots. I'm 38 now. :)
In this video was 35, I think.
Everyone ages from the last time you saw them...looking good, STILL giving expert tips 💯
what is the difference between the hitman boxing style and the philly shell ?
Have you seen the Mayweather vs Hatton fight?
Really great stuff, such a shame I found this video a whole year after it came out. I'll have to subscribe so that doesn't happen again 😊
glad you like it!
Here after Sean Strickland got the UFC title.
Did he do some of this stuff? I haven't watched that fight yet.
@@expertboxing Absolutely. You can find a bit of all of what you taught in this video. It was a simple looking fundamental masterclass of defensive and proficient philly shell use!
Its called flicker-jab
Where’s your gym located?
this one is long beach, CA…but i train out of multiple gyms
What you show looks more orthodox to me.....watch a Caleb Plant fight to see how the Phillyshell defense and counter really works!

手腕打痛了,一年多还没好。
😂 can we fight?
You're not shooting your jab from it's original position, you're pulling your hand back a bit and then shooting, which means that you're telegraphing your punches. This is also not a Philly Shell at all, lmao. You'd be laughed at in Philly. No offense though.
2:26 Too open. Not a shell, not a classic boxing stance. Idk what this is. I'm seriously doubting your boxing experience.
Comments like this make me doubt YOUR boxing experience more than anything.
If you actually knew the philly shell, then you know how hard it is to utilize the left hand against aggressive opponents. Rolling rights and ducking lefts ain’t gonna work all day. If you had your own experience, you’d also know why (AND HOW) my adjustments do work. Laughs on you, bud. ✌️
@@expertboxing No need to be this defensive :)
Your attitude towards criticism shows me enough on what kind of a trainer you are, though. Talk to someone from Philly, please.
No need to be defensive. :)
Your attitude towards someone with clearly more experience than you shows what kind of student you are. Talk to someone from Philly, please.
