Metal O-ring and copper headgaskets should be on ALL the big boy drag cars I.E. Ruby, Leroy, and Mullett tbh...they save blocks and make headrepairs easier and seal so much better
Top fuel hoops and dry deck the block and heads. Biggest studs you can get.
These cars are fun to watch develop and are a big part of the channel, but they are not near "big boy drag cars"! A Drag Week" car that runs in the sixes is a rare bird. There are very few running right now. If they want "mullet" to be one of those it will take a full-time effort. This is a busy operation! Garrett has a lot going on. A dedicated team and shop may be the next move.
Forsure I didn’t know they didn’t have hoops already.
@Paul Copeland and drag week only proves it more too what kinda cars they are as well. It’s hard to build a reliable fast drag car that can street drive.
The original engine for Leroy had the top fuel hoops on it. That's how they were able to run it even when it blew out the head gaskets. They drained the coolant and then ran a 7.86
I figured they were still running those on all the high horsepower engines.
Kevin: Decel is a lot of load on a motor
Cleet: sick, still keeps her in gear in decel 🤣
Freaking love that Sam is becoming a "regular" on the channel! The man's out there just living his best life with Cleeter and the boys!
Sam merch when??
Really liked seeing and hearing everyones input on getting mullet to get down track . I like hearing all the tech talk .
Agreed. Commented almost the exact same thing at the same time haha
Only problem with that is now there’s multiple people trying to make decisions on the car how cleet mentioned in a different video so it can be a gift and a curse
I like that you add more of the discussion and team thoughts/problem solving inbetween runs now. It's like a short more natural behind the scenes conversation of getting the cars dialed to go down the track
At least the transmission holds together long enough to find the engine problem. You'll get the bugs worked out, it's still a pretty fresh build.
I ain't even mad that Mullet didn't end up as a jet car. He's a full send rager now YeeYee!!!!!!!!
Hey brother I love how you have brought life back to the Race track. In a time when so many people wanna see the car lifestyle/culture change in ways that takes away the freedoms to it. Thanks for bringing back so FREEDOM!!!!
I've been hoping he could do that so some of us could enjoy racing there too.
So glad to hear Kevin recommend neutraling on the shut down. Steve Morris has pointed out premature failures for this very reason, people that let the engine do the braking. Very stressful on a engine.
You can damage the transmission if it doesn’t actually have a clean neutral.
Could also make your tranny grenade.. it's all about compromise.. this for that.
@@Racing11gt yeah it's gotta be a free neutral but this trannny shouldn't be a problem.
@@SouthernSpeedVideos guess it depends on which part costs more, engine or transmission... LOL
and yet cleetus never did it on the passes in this video lol
Funny the issues there are the same ones you run into with a 4l80e, shifting earlier etc
I love how all this started in Leroy and it’s landed cleet here. Such a great group of guys even when it was just cleet and cooper. I’ve been watching since I was 15 (I’m now 19) and I’ve learned so much and had so much entertainment watching cleet take off.
That is incredible Kevin has the tech genius to think to program a safety protocol to protect the engine if it detects a abnormal coolant pressure .
Its all them sensors.. More data the better
Sensors are amazing. If I was building a car, I'd definitely go hog wild with sensors because the stuff that is out there and the amount of inputs these ECUs can take is staggering. I feel like sensors are the main reason forced induction has become so "easy" compared to say in the 70s and 80s.
If he was the first guy to come up with it sure but I don't think it's a secret if you think head gasket might be an issue it's probably standard practices
I think he just saved mullet
Never wondered why they have almost a hundred sensors on an F1 car? Every bit of data counts. I'm not sure about Holley but with Motec you can write any logic you want to modify the engine in the even of change.
Kevin "deccel is a lot of load on the engine, especially locked up."
Cleetus thinking about the end of every 1/4 mile pass in Leroy ever "okay"
My heart goes out to you boys...a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get into those sixes.... but the whole community is right behind you all.. great team effort. Cmon Mullet....
Gotta love Kevin for all the safeties he builds in.
So.. The blazer has an evergreen wheelie bar now.
Man it’s cool seeing your team of friends all having their part. Love how everyone gets along and doesn’t step on each others shoes, every oke knows their purpose, what a great team you got man. Would be a dream of mine to be on a team like that.

I love this channel so much the amazing amount of work that goes into a super sick drag car is just fascinating. The testing the tuning this content is definitely my favourite part of this channel!!!!
Kevin looked soo gutted you could almost feel his pain
When you have a vehicle that is staked on your reputation and it’s constantly having problems on a National platform I’m sure it can be stressful. Granted head gaskets and transmissions aren’t really his fault but after a while I’m sure it gets old fast. But the man clearly understands something that is constantly being tested with new parts and suspension set ups is just going to have trials and tribulations. They got spoiled with Ruby just a work horse and a combo that has just worked for them…Mullett is definitely making them work for it
@@maxxphat87 they're taking a much bigger step with this one. Going from 7s to 6s is harder on everything.
@@ryanlamfers8692 that's for sure and a LOT of these fans don't quite understand how fast 6's are and the stress too all the components it takes. They don't have 3 spare blocks and 10 sets of heads on standby after every pass for top fuel cars for the fun of it.... this car will be in the 6's by the end of February 2k22 and then struggle again with new issues. It is a very expensive milestone to maintain. Everyone talks about big chief and look at where his pro mod went in the quarter..... best was a3.38- 5.42 I believe and the times the talk about on the show with the "I remeber when I had a 4.40 car" they are talking about to the eighth.... 🤷🏽♂️🙃✌🏼
Tough break fellas!
Luckily it doesn't seem too terrible.
And Kevin might be on to something with those "topfuel hoops" he mentioned.... it might be that time for ya'll. Plus look at how well they hold up, just ask Kyle and Brent.
It’s called a fire ring
@@jonathanedwards8913 they have different versions a top fuel hoops is what they are talking about TKM does it to there engines all the time it's a solid machined in piece fire ring is just copper with split at the end same concept kinda but the hoops are way better having no gap and being machined to engine
I think what that T400 really needs is a nice SMX to complement everything. TSP 427's are awesome and all, but Morris's stuff is on another level entirely.
Yes yes it is
But this was the last transmission he ever had to buy
Cleeter is sitting on a SM 540 BBC. Said it was for the ramp truck at the FF. But it's been so long who knows what the plan is
If he has to turn the LS down to not blow the tires off, an SMX or other Pro Mod type motor is the last thing he needs
@@randomguy9635 I think he would also put big tires on it.
"We barely got started"..... more like just hit your stride! Mullet is going to EAT when it is dialed. What a weapon.

No matter how many times you break a car, or miss out on events, we’ll still be here until you run with the big boys and stay on top consistently!
As a person who tractor pulls and builds Pro Stock pulling tractor engines with turbos in excess of 150mm. C-rings and no head gaskets or fire rings and copper head gaskets. But all the Pro Stock engines are c-rings and head directly on block.
I feel like copper gaskets and a fire ring are the way to go!
Kevin killing it as always
literally saved the engine thank to having set up safety features properly
It's always fun when we get to have Keven at the track days. He works so well with the Cleetus team.
Need more of these type of videos. Love them and this group of guys and gals!
James and that leaf blower had me absolutely dying!
I still wouldn't shut the engine off on the big end at high speed even with the safe neutral. That is one of two very important rules of the TH400. The other being always start your burnout in 2nd gear.
why would the gearbox matter if you neutral it ?
Not sure but engine off no transfluid pump?
@@Nebbia_affaraccimiei Because with a TH400 putting the trans in Neutral at high speed will cause the direct drum to double in RPM and could explode from over spinning it.
@@1nitrousmustang yes never shift a t350 or 400 to neutral the drums accelerate to huge speeds and tend to fragment like a frag grenade let alone the wear on parts

I used to own an AA/FC and this video really makes me feel old. Damn El Camino running times that would win top fuel events just a few years ago! Most of our tuning between rounds was an educated guess at best. We had years of set ups from when we ran the track before, but so many variables. To my crew chiefs credit we only destroyed one engine in fifteen years of racing. I really appreciate you sharing some of the tuning decisions as they are being implemented. Do it for Dale 100%
Time to o-ring the block and run copper head gaskets for sure.
I figured they already would have had the o rings on it. I swear that leroy had them at some point

Need to have TKM performance do their top fuel hoops like Kevin said. John Doc is running more power and more boost with them and never has an issue.
9:40 - Cleetus decels in gear after being told by Kevin to start putting it in neutral at the end of a run. C’mon Cleeter!
I wonder if Kevin can program it so that the air shifter pops it into neutral automatically when the chute is thrown.
@@garrettstevens2232 Im sure Kevin could figure it out, dude doesn't seem to have " can't, won't, don't, or doesn't" in his vocabulary. Seems if he doesn't know how to do something, he's quick to learn it. One hell of a racer/tuner/builder/guy in my hmo.
Yeah he ended up.doing it just must have forgot
What Kevin said about the big guys putting the ring in the head is the best way to hold big power it’s worth doing Cletus
Is this the same concept as Fire Rings in the Performance Diesel world?
No, people do O-ringed heads in the diesel world too. O-ringed heads have a stainless ring that protrudes out of a groove machined in the head that puts extra pressure on the gasket around the combustion chamber. Fire rings completely eliminate the fire ring on the head gasket and are your only seal for combustion, they hold more boost but tend to leak over time so they’re not good for street vehicles.
I’m with Kevin, needs top fuel hoops at the hps that y’all are getting into. The hoops require the block and heads to be machined, TKM has mini hoops that they make in house I think, they only require the block or the heads to be machined for the hoop, and they’re bigger than an o-ring set up.
A really tough break hopefully no significant damage. And I totally understand the frustration with all the coin that you have thrown at that race car you would think it would be a lot easier to achieve your goals of being in a six second arena. As always really enjoy the content in the video! keep your heads up you guys will get there. We need more moonshine videos too. Dr Tune them all.
TKM Black Sheep for mullet Texas Speed builds nice street engines but when you get to this caliber I think TKM is the go to for LS.
I agree but I think he needs to go to a Steve Morris SMX engine. Look at what Tom Baily does at his power levels!!!
@@wbr7869 tom Baily doesn't have an LS
@@ninaallen7849 Yup exactly!!! Not knocking a ls but for big power you need something like the SMK engine. That engine can take the power!!!
I just said this lol
@@wbr7869 I don’t think cleetus wants an engine he has to check valve lash on every day twice a day to make sure it’s not eating itself, like Tom does. A hydraulic roller LS can more than achieve his goal.
Time for a big boy motor Texas speed has given it everything lol
Not the most exciting days, but I'm so glad to see you guys doing some hardcore testing days. Mullet is absolutely itching to fly 6's, but gotta get the little issues sorted out first.

PLZ!!!!!!!!!! More of the banter in-between runs! Makes me the viewer feel more apart of what's going on! tytyty
Love these test and tunes. The knowledge is pretty impressive
I've been asking for months and months if Cleetus was having Texas Speed to put Top Fuel Hoops in the block and heads because they work up to 60 lbs of boost and go up to 90lbs because all the TKM cars have them and thats where I learn about them. John Doc ran a 4.15 e/t with a TKM hydraulic lifter LS
It was already hurt,, those fumes that Kevin spent time on resolving was actually a ring or two not seating. Back to Texas Speed!!
That engine to Corner of shop and a Steve morris or proline power plant between the rails needs to happen
Even though we aren't there in person to see this action, it's still really cool to watch on video. Definitely a lot of fun to watch the team working together to tweak Mullet. I'm not a drag racer but from what I can tell this new tranny is much much smoother. It really gets the power to wheels and power to the ground in a much smoother manner than the previous tranny. I would assume that means it has much more control of what the motor is putting out.
This is the content that I've been waiting for! Thank you!
Buddy, you’ve been going this fast without O-Rings. Now that’s some ambitious bald eagles right there
What a wealth of knowledge this crew you guys have assembled, mullet going low 7’s high 6’s soon
Holy Turbo Batman!! Mullet is my favorite car in the fleet!!
I love that sound shoes make on the grip surface! I need that sound as a notification!
I think it's less that you all go for too much and then have to back down, it's that you've had a lot of upgrades that have provided so much more power than expected, so your old tune ends up making so much more power. You've had it happen back to back to back.
Finally some spicy shifts and mind blowing 60 ft’s!
"mind blowing"?? Nope, not yet. I am sure they are looking for a couple of tenths somewhere.
Kevin nailed it on the head sounds like you need to have TKM go over it and install some top fuel hoops or just get Black Sheep engine from them problem solved

I say this with the BEST of intentions. I love yall and ONLY want the best for everyone involved with this channel, and The Freedom Factory.
Cleetus needs to build another good habit besides putting the new trans in neutral at the end of the run - putting that helmet visor down EVERY run. Even more so when doing testing with new changes involved and running methanol.
It may sound elementary, but attach a small check list to the dash and go over it before every run before your burnout and as you are getting in the zone. Once the habit is established it will just be muscle memory.
God forbid he ever have a significant cabin fire with it up like he sometimes does. It can happen, and only takes one oversight. It would be terrible for Garrett and a big setback for the entire team.
I hate that Mullet is being so challenging to get dialed in, but I'm sure it will happen, hopefully soon, Good Lord Willing.
