These engines sound so mean and powerful, nothing else like them. When it fired up it made me jump and then when he eventually revved it up it shot a dose of adrenaline to my heart.... Awesome engines!

I would hug mine before starting it and rub it with an oily rag afterwards !!! And let it leak oil on the carpet if it wanted !!

This is why they made smaller V12's,because they knew that the engine sounded beautiful, but couldn't fit in a standard size vehicle. When it decided to fire up though, I damn near jumped out of my skin! But I'm glad these are still around though, because that was probably a powerplant for a P51Mustang,from World war II. It's good to see a piece of history that is still in working condition.

Ther We were used in unlimited hydroplanes in the 50s , 60s and 70s before turbine engines took over. Throw one of these in a boat open cockpit . With no seat belt and race others on a 2.5 mile over doing upwards of 200mph.. Total madness.
Check out the BMW Brutus startup too. This Rolls Royce Merlin was in Spitfires, I think. The BMW V12 in Brutus was in Heinkel 111s. Two WW2 engines still kicking.

They did, in fact, use them as tank engines. Rolls Royce detuned the Merlin down to 600 HP, but 1450 ft lbs of torque for normal gasoline, and renamed it the Meteor V12.

Why are they starting this without at least a paddle prop installed, some load, from the balance of forces internal to the engine, this is a bad thing to do without a propeller.

It wasn't the P51, it was the Spitfire. P51s were powered by a Packard V-1650-7 a version of the Merlin 66...
