I really think Tyranth should look into learning to smith. He clearly has an aptitude for making things. Im sure he'd take to it quite well. Imagine being able to do builds from scratch. The sword kinda has a vampiric character to it between the dark red, fanged crossguard, and the octagonal pommel that has a cobweb vibe to it. Very cool.
I prefer the V1 handle that you went with, nice and detailed but not aggressively so whereas V2 feels like there is almost too much going on at the handle compared to everything else it really stands out
Dude, that's impressive... A basket hilt would be a real pain in the butt to make but they are one of my top 3 favorite sword hilt styles. The Venetian Schiavona is my personal favorite type of basket hilt sword.
Nice, i have always wanted a basket-hilt cutlass with a false edge (or would that make it more of a Messer?), with a longer than normal handle, that would probably be my ideal sword
Instead of having the guard and pommel milled, look into having them printed out of metal instead. Since it would be a single process and no material is wasted, it will likely be cheaper. You are more than capable of cleaning it up to get all the lines crisp and to the desired finish. There are a good amount of places that you can send them the files and they will make it and ship it to you. They are surprisingly affordable and do a good job.
I did purchase my own Honshu single-handed broadsword a few months ago and wanted to let you know the one that I received is of good quality, so they must have inconsistent manufacturing.
You should try and get shad onboard with making his own custom sword like this one! Non of that online custom sword ordering. Get him into the shop so that he can make it like you did. would love to see something like that between your 2 channels. See who can really make the best custom sword.
V1 looks the most comfortable. Make sure when you weld the allthread that after you are done you heat up and thermalcycle the end of the tang around where the weld is. The high heat from the weld will make that spot brittle and prone to snapping, air cooling thermal cycle will help restructure the steel. You did a great job you should learn bladesmithing.
It would be a bit of work, but you could fabricate a hollow steel version of that pommel and get a similar feel, I suspect. That also has some historical precedent as Tod's Workshop has pointed out.
Hey! Love the content you have made over the years here and with Shad as well; I am a custom sword smith and blade maker! You’ve gotta get me to make a sword for you man, it’s literally what I do! I also do recent build videos on this channel showing the process and my progress in the craft! God bless - Ian
V1. Adding ones personal touches on a weapon is interesting. I'd been given a cold steel master tanto some years ago by my uncle when I gifted him a knife. The rubber kraton material supposed to never rot started disintegrating over time. I took the guts out of para cord and removed the strands inside and just used the sheath of it to bind and wrap the hilt til it blended like it was made for it. Functional with character. I look forward to seeing updates on this sword.
Getting the pommel and guard design printed in 3D and then sand casted might be a cheaper solution?. It would be a really cool way to add something more rustic/less sleek and hammered looking to the build. I could imagine some work-hardened bronze would look incredible on that blade.
The reason for the handle being loose but the screws being tight is because they didn't counter sink the screws properly, so they do the opposite of the intention. It's the same thing that can happen with the tsuka on cheap katana that have two mekugi or double pegged. It is easier to have a tight tsuka with a single mekugi but that tends to require a properly friction fit tsuka. When you counter sink the second mekugi ana wrong you unbalance the "equal load" between the two mekugi, and so they actually fight each other, making your tsuka loose. Same thing with your screws.
Have you considered selling replacement fittings? Honshu blades are great and they sell them by themselves so mixing and matching fittings would be great! There used to be replacement 3rd party fittings for the Tinker-Pierce Honshu swords but they're never in stock.
I very much enjoyed this video. I'm glad I got the notification, too. The sword modifications process is so enjoyable to watch. I'm glad this channel still gets some use.
I liked the first handle design better. And I said in a reply to the pinned comment, I wonder what a diamond pattern would need to make on a cord wrap instead of the v2 pattern. If you have an angle grinder, files and some time, the pommel is doable by yourself. Same for the guard but it would probably be a lot harder to get it nice. Tho you could go from a straight piece and heat it in coal to bend it how you want, it's not too hard. Only thing you'd want to pay for is the threading of the pommel, because that's usualy where things go wrong without good equipment.
