  • Push sticks are and important accessory when it comes to table saw safety. However, the one’s that come with your new table saw may not be as good as you’d think!
In this video I’ll show you why I don’t use the cheap plastic push stick that comes with the table saw, and a very simple, but much safer alternative that you can make in just a few minutes.

I add oval hole for hands to grip. Also place to hold on wall. Love this site.

That works too if you like that style. I keep mine as simple as possible and no holes or angles so they can be used longer before needing to be replaced.

So simple & works so well! I made one using a scrap piece of 3/4" ply, super easy to make. When I used it the first time, I noticed my hand staring to slip a little while holding it, because it's sanded nice & smooth. So I just threw on some festive DuckTape around the top to give some grip. And it also helps it stand out as "this is a tool". Win win.

The stock push stick leaves a lot to be desired. If you don't have a lot of money to upgrade this is a good cheap alternative.

Hi, new sub as I just found you. I have a gripper, and I use whatever I can get my hands on for a push stick. Sometimes a pencil eraser on small parts, or a wood cut out like you describe. It looks like you have a nice shop, and I look forward to seeing more.

Especially how falsely safe the long skinny style is…we call it the chickens foot.
The BEST push stick is the one you have in your hand. Especially if you want to play the piano, clarinet, sax…

I made 2 push blocks this week for my son (I’m giving my table saw to him), one out of a 1x6 and the other out of a 2x6. They are modified versions of Jay Bates’ push block (similar to April Wilkerson’s). They’re not that much different from the whale except that they both used 2x6 lumber for even better control. The whale could use a grip hole or hand hole for a better grip like the almost identical block created by William Ng.

    • @biscuittreewoodworks
      @biscuittreewoodworks  8 месяцев назад

I’ve thought about adding a hand hole, but I prefer having my hand rest on top of the push stick. It certainly wouldn’t hurt though if that’s the style you like!

I have a question on your whale. Wooden it be a bit better to cut a hole up on top to grip and control your wood better? To prevent slip? Also I do use a wooden stick like the one that came in the box. But i use 2 of them. One at the top and one at the back. Better control i think. Anyways good channel.

If you prefer you can cut a slot for your hand. I like it without and get a good enough grip and I have more room for trimming it before I have to make a new one. I can see how two push sticks would work better than one.

As I grew up and still today, cut a "paint" stick if you will to help guide the work through the saw....
We'd grab a 2x4 scrap piece with straight grain, 16 to 20" long, square one edge and then cut off off a few strips about 5/16" thick to use as a guide just before the saw. I don't use serious pressure, just enough to to let the work slide into the saw. It wasn't a rule, but it was a thought item.." humm.. I'm going to use the paddle here too.". That's what we called it The paddle! 😅
18" long was our working length, and only used just ahead of the saw blade (1 to 2"). Odd ends, really thin material ( both ways).
I'm using a "John Heinz" style of push stick... Yeah 😆 no " renewal", but again it's scrap plywood.. 😆! I'm going to make a couple of yours, one without a grip slot, and one with, akin to a grip on a rifle stock, a slot curved with the corner. The renewal aspect is great 👍!
Good stuff! Just caught your feed... YT and their dang algorithms- where were you before!! 😆😆!

@@Caseybroocks there's no way, even if I could toss 200 bucks at a toy, I'd be able to justify spending it on one of those rather than an actual tool I'd use s lot more often, when I can make a push stick with a scrap piece of lumber, and when it's used up, toss it in the burn pile or shred it for mulch. Can't do that with freaking plastic, and less than 10% of plastic is ever recycled, but wood comes from sustainable sources and doesn't leave microplastics floating around in my bloodstream. 🙄😒
