September and the rest of the Autumn of 1982, Room 266, Hemlock Dormitory, Mansfield State College, Mansfield, Pennsylvania, USA, the college radio station WNTE, 89.5, played this all the time.
I was twenty years old and became enchanted with the melody and the lyrics and I wondered where is this mystical and magical Papeete and Marquesas?
Then I saw the video and that orange cap he wears? Ever since then to this day I call my own cap just like the one he wore in the video my Stephen Stills cap, tho' mine is my preferred color of blue.
I also decided back then in 1982 that Someday Maybe I Was going to travel to Papeete and the Marquesas. It became a quest for me to complete the journey.
Forty-two years later and here I finally am with my wife and son who, ironically is twenty years old, like I was when Ii first heard the song.
I am listening to Stephen Stills singing “Southern Cross” as I type out this comment in Papeete, 18 June 24.
This Sunday, the 23rd, we will be in the Marquesas for ten days.
All I can say is, “Wow”.
I still cannot believe I am here.
Thank you Stephen Stills for inspiring me to come here.

Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern Islands.
    Sailing a reach a'fore a following sea.
She was making for the trades on the outside,
And the downhill run to Papeete Bay
Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas.
We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making wake.
In a noisy bar in Avalon, I tried to call you,
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.
Think about how many times I have fallen.
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world, lookin' for that woman-girl
    Who knows love can endure.
    And you know it will.
When you see the Southern Cross for the first time,
You understand now why you came this way.
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small,
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day.
So I'm sailing for tomorrow. My dreams are a-dying.
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain.
I have my ship, and all her flags are a-flying.
She is all that I have left, and music is her name.
Think about how many times I have fallen.
Spirits are using me; larger voices callin'.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world, lookin' for that woman-girl
    Who knows love can endure.
    And you know it will.
    And you know it will.
So we cheated and we lied and we tested.
And we never failed to fail; it was the easiest thing to do.
    You will survive being vested.
But somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you
    In the Southern Cross.
Rip David Crosby. You will be forever remembered 💯

Thanks for posting those. All that sailing talk is a little hard to follow, but I love this song so much that I make the effort. I wish the video didn’t leave off the last stanza. Now I don’t know whether to choose the music video or the complete song for my playlist. I’m putting together a playlist of songs about sailing and the ocean. ❤

From what I gather from googling the boat is now in France and named "Southern Star". Great song, and really fun to play on acoustic guitar.

I love this song, but this video falls short of great due to the video being an "AM" radio-style cut, which doesn't give us the whole song as the whole final verse is cut out. I could understand this were it the old days where AM radio consisted of songs lasting no more than 3 1/2 minutes, but when this video was produced, even songs lasting on upwards of 8 minutes or more were on AM radio, and for me, butchering or unneeded editing of ANY song, ESPECIALLY ANY songs by this masterful trio, borders on musical sacrilege !
Yeah, it's my gripe, and it may seem pissy & petty to others, but beautiful, soul-soothing songs like "Southern Cross" are what helps me get through long days & long, less than pleasant nights, when life is not going well otherwise. Music is what I live for, and many's the time when it seems that music is what keeps me going when I'd much rather call it quits. I was very fortunate in that I knew David Crosby personally for many years, no, we weren't tight friends, but we could call one another, and we did, and we did have some really good conversations over the years, and now, with his passing, my world is a bit more empty & just that much less. Rest In Peace David, and may your new journey be one of eternal joy, You shall be truly missed & remembered.....

This is the version played on MTV. All I can think it was cut for time. When I finally heard the song in full my jaw dropped ! They cut out the best line!! “so we cheated & we lied & we tested, and we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do” Genius!!!

Southern Cross was a good song off Daylight Again, but the best songs off that album were Delta, Wasted On The Way and Song For Susan. Daylight Again, if you are asking me, is actually more of a Stephen Stills solo album than a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young album.
