I really want to become an animator but after seeing open ai sora I think my dream died a little? Unfortunately it seems in only a few years ai can definitely replace animators
Well said Harvey! With how ai is working at the moment, People will use current ai tools to generate work that they already know they like but, I think, we as Animators will need to reach more into our own lived experiences in order to create more engaging animations & stories for audiences that didn't know they needed them.
I think you're absolutely spot on James. Animation is incredibly complex and it takes a lifetime to master, so I believe it will always require that human touch no matter how automated they make it. Thanks for watching and for the great comment.
out of 10 AI generations only 1 is usable, i will pass, too many tools to get 1 percent of usable result. so much time consuming ( trying numerous prompts, even same prompts give different results but you have ControlNet's but again not satisfactory results each time). i have been using all the tools from 2.5+ years and believe me they are resting and rusting on my 2tb hard drive. sometimes i thought of cleaning them completely.
in my opinion it's another tool thanks that we can make better animation, it not take job. I don't have so big imagination like human, but this is the important things in animation
Thank you so much Harvey for talking about this. This has been on my mind for quite some time as a student of animation. You cleared up my doubts about going on this journey of learning animation.
kid, step back, be realistic. You're accepting a comforting lie, and you know it. The truth, as we know, is that Ai ALREADY has taken tech jobs, (IBM) and replacing artists at small studios. So what exactly are you trying to believe from this video? the last proof I can give you that this is going to decimate jobs, and maybe animation too, is this point 5:03 "you pay more money" from work done by hand. If you've never worked in the industry, all that matters for big companies and most small ones, is the bottom dollar cost. That means less animators using Ai, to do more work, and paying for few instead of a full team, It's not going to fully happen for years, but you can bet that it will. Sorry,

That was the moment that made me do this video, the more I thought about it, the more I thought. There must be other people out there with these questions. Glad it resonates.
There are a lot of problems AI still art has right now including the inability to make existing flying vehicles and hands. The next step is quick communication and that's something AI can't do. Think of a sketch artist trying to draw a criminal. The sketch artist will be much quicker at getting a close approximation than AI. AI animation can get close, but when showing how a modern car's engine works, close is not good enough.

Hey Harvey, this is Antoine. How are you? I hope all is well. Hey, this was a very good take on this whole "AI" situation with Animation and just Art and Artists in general. As much as I hated AI, and (Railed) against it at the time because of its "Unethical and Unregulated" uses of it, but now as of late, I'm slowly starting to come around to the fact that this thing ain't going (anywhere). In any case, great topic, and I just wanted to jump on here to show my support for your channel and this topic. Anyway, keep up the great work, and thanks, bro.

Thankyou Harvy for this video. My daughter (13) had always wanted to be an animator, but seeing the rapid developement if AI in this field discouraged her a lot, so much so that she was contemplating changing her stream. I think I'll encourage her to stick to doing what she loves, but we're a little lost on as to how to proceed further. How should she proceed so that she can get into a good animations school and which one to be specific. Would really appreciate if you can take out some time to reply to my message.
Hey there, glad to know that she's interested in animation is a wonderful career. Might be best to start by following some animation tutorials either in Maya or Blender which is Free...Pierrick Picaud has some excellent tutorials for Blender that are easy to understand and quite entertaining. After she grasps the basics having a mentor/mentorship or an online class like Animation Mentor or iAnimate might suit best as she will be able to ask questions. Wishing her the best of luck in her Animation Journey
the way you describe this, make it seem like the animators work will be worth less if it makes it so much faster/easier to make animations. It also makes it seem like the skill ceiling to become a animator will become lower. Am I wrong? you think wages will not get lower because of this.
On the contrary I think AI will help you focus on the skills that truly matter, spending more time researching, taking video reference, setting up your posing...I see AI as a glorified inbetweener and a good inbetweener always saves time so the main animator can focus on what truly matters...the creativity of the animation.
AI and Automation Tools, such as motion matching, serve a purpose but it is all dependent on the the type of game you're producing. In games which require more realistic body mechanics, timings, and posing, such tech definitely makes getting animation data integrated into engine faster for functionality and proof of gameplay. However, the final product will always lack an identity. That's the beauty of animation. It creates a core memory for the player experience that lasts and that's through an artist's touch. This is applicable across all art disciplines that are required to make video games. How many times have games been released with procedural environments and entities that feel lifeless? It's as if it served no purpose but just to exist for the sake of necessity and not tell a story. This is the role of a game developer, especially the devs who are responsible for the content aspect of the game. AI should only be used as a tool to make us more efficient and allow us to create the stories we want to tell the player. This is why I am in full agreement with Harvey and many other animators across the industry that AI will never replace animators, as long as the product we are trying to make stays true to creating a unique and memorable player experience.
Incredibly well said Mikey. Thanks for the amazing comment. The future is bright for the animation industry and I’m excited to see where all these new tools take us.

If you like it, just do it. AI technology is still new to the industry, so don't worry about animators disappearing. If you're worried about financial problems, get a stable full time job, then work on animation on the side until you get good enough to do it full time. Best of luck.
2.40.. "with a mouse" you mean a Wacom right? RIGHT ?!! 😂 AI isn't there yet but it may help in the future with doing some clever stitching of clips and then providing a ragdoll overlay to add collisions against other objects... eg a drunk walkhing through streets and bumping into people before going up some stairs and falling over perhaps... good opportunity to stitch some clips together and add ragdoll collisions on top. But the end result will always likely need an animator to fine tune it up.
