Formula E, especially the Gen 1 cars, has/had some big constraints on circuit design - you need lots of big stops for regeneration, and the straights can't be too long because long striaghts show up the cars' lack of top speed - and when you plug those factors into a very long, very thin plot footprint like they were working with here, they pretty much got as good as they could get out of it - plus it did look cool with beach and the sea and so on
That's why I think this circuit was as good as it was, when you take into account the car's technological boundaries the track designers had to deal with.
This track sounds really bad on paper but the races here were somehow quite good. There was a great race-long duel between Vergne and DiGrassi for the lead that remains one of the best FE battles I've ever seen, as well as some daring overtakes on the high-speed sections.
Im actually from Uruguay and whilst I didn't understand a lot of the racing terms that you used in the video I found it really interesting, a large part of the track is still there unused (from the start until turn 8 I think) and people use it to park or bike, I never went to the races but I remember that the times it happened it definetly was the biggest racing event of the year in Uruguay. Today they announced that the El Pinar track (closer to Montevideo and a more traditional track) will have a TCR South America race in August so that is nice. I found your channel because I didnt know about the TCR and saw your video about the WTC, it was also really good.
Thanks for the information on the circuit... post being a circuit. Glad you found both videos interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the international stars of touring car racing will fair in that country/continent.
From what I remember the 2014 race especially was super fun. Vergne's FE debut straight after leaving F1, plus poor Matty Brabham ending it in the wall. A fun track in spite of the layout because Gen1 FE was just awesome.
My biggest memory of the Punta del Este ePrix is how fragile the Gen 1 cars were. You just look at a sausage curb wrong, and you would break your suspension.
It was one of my favourite tracks of Formula e) Some new suggestions: West Palm Beach, Columbus, Del Mar Fairgrounds, Meadowlands, New Orleans Shanghai - 2 different circuits (Shanghai Super Prix - non-championship race for DTM in 2004 & points race in 2010) Boavista (Porto, grand prix circuit in 50's-60's and WTCC track in 2000's-10's
I currently have an enormous list of tracks that have been requested by people. Whilst that's really good, it's always a bit tricky which track I should do next..... and when Baltimore will appear in this series.
2:10 - I once saw (on TV) a US development series race on an oval with a chicane at turn one. But the chicane was only used on lap 2 or the lap after restarts. On the laps where the field went green, they used the full oval primarily for safety. 3:05 - Montreal's Gilles Villeneuve circuit is less than 5km and has five chicanes and a hairpin. How they are used and whether they're conducive to racing makes all the difference.
I wish Formula E would quit using street circuits, or at least use less of them. Why not race on the Brands Hatch "Indy circuit", the club circuit at Silverstone, or Yas Marina's North Corkscrew circuit (2.29km)?
The ALMS had a number of tracks that did that; Texas Motor Speedway and Baltimore (which surely is going to end up on this series, right?) both did first the lap chicane skip, for differing reasons.
buenos aires had 2 street circuit "failures" the first one for TC2000 in 2013, the track had the first sector in av. 9 de julio(the widest street in the world) and around the obelisk the second one was the formula e track in puerto madero, one of the richest zones of the city
Loving the series, looking forward to seeing what other tracks are included. My suggestion would be the Street Circuit in Baku (early-mid 2010s) that was used for FIA GT and Blancpain GT. Recall there being a claustrophobic looking chicane being included in the initial layout and am intrigued to hear your thoughts.
True, I forgot about that. Although, that was more that they used a different section of the track, whilst the TC2000 track was more how they re-profiled an existing corner mid race.
Skipping a chicane, which this was, at the start of a race isn't that uncommon, if it could cause issues. WTCC did the same at Porto, although there it was the final chicane just before S/F straight. Similarly in the Brazilian Stock Car series, can't remember the name of the track, though. Also Baltimore Street circuit skipped the chicane at the start.
This is great content, and i do enjoy your voice. Please continue with whatever you wish and find enjoyment in. You are going to grow quickly! don't forget yourself in all the numbers! Best wishes from Denmark.
Thanks for the very kind words. I don't think I'll ever be any different no matter what number of followers I have. I feel like the quality will suffer if I try to be somebody I'm not.
One circuit that came to my mind, that you haven't covered so far is the Shanghai street circuit used by DTM. I heard strories that manhole-covers came lose during practise
In my opinion, the Punta Del Este E-Prix circuit was one of my favourites circuit in Formula E history and I love watching these cars flying through the chicanes on the back straight but I accept that the Uruguayan government has decided to not fund the Punta Del Este E-Prix because it was to expensive but instead we had an incredible Extreme E Energy X-Prix in 2022 not to far away from the city and TyDye in the subject of others Formula E street tracks failures there’s a lot: Montreal, Miami, Bern, Zurich, Paris, Moscow, Buenos Aires, Beijing, Sanya, Hong Kong, Santiago of Chile and others you need to cover in your next videos.
Punta Del Este was one of my favourite Formula E tracks. Would be cool to see the Gen3 cars race there, but don't think it would work as well. All of those tracks have been requested before, some of which will more than likely feature in this series.
I attended the 2018 ePrix and the on track action was great! Fun to experience the sound of the electric cars. Well, believe it or not this track made its racing return two weeks ago when it hosted a round of the National Karting Championship. It proved successful as more than 200 drivers entered the event across many categories. If you manage to get some footage, you should check the Piriapolis Street Circuit in which Southamerican F3 and the national uruguayan categories raced in between 1994 and 2011. A pretty good track imo, I also attended some races there
Please talk about the Formula E Montréal track! It only hosted one race and no-one came to see it because of the price of the tickets. It is now a running gag in Montréal.
Punta Del Este was as good as it could be, given the limitations it was designed under - both geographical, and vehicular. Still produced a couple of the better races in FE at the time. As for the changing turn 1 configuration, that's been used at several circuits over the years. The Rockingham (UK) Oval had a road course that did the same thing, round the oval at the start, thru the chicane thereafter. Katherine Legge flipped her car going through it back in her F3 days...
That flip with Katherine Legge was quite something. The track did have loads of chicanes, although I know it was done to help give the cars better brake energy regeneration.
Im happy your growing in subs I was here when you had 1k subs, now i dont comment much but your growing and im happy to be part of the journey to 100k subs, I know you can do it. Also In my opinion i would love to see this track then Dirayh, although has a porsche fan in all motorsports, the track isnt as good, there is only overtaking zone but its hard becuase there is high speed left and rights that give cars behind aero wash that hurts them getting close to making a move into turn 18-19, Also since there is a energy deployment if they are close the car infront can easily just deploy away and still wont be losing the postion
Biggest Street Track Failure of Formula E was Bern imho; nobody there wanted a race anyway and the start was right in front of a super tight single file chicane, with the expected result at the start of the race... You should make a video about this one!
50/50 on it. I do understand your point about the chicanes, although they didn't had a choice with the Gen1 cars back in the day.. One would wonder how it would fit in now with the Gen3 regs. But it seems to me that they did get a fairly limited section to work with, if I understood you correctly. Though, when I remember the last race on it vividly, couldn't say it was a real bad track either :) If you look further in this section, maybe Paris? They say they will come back during COVID, but at the moment I don't see how that's possible. Plus it was... small
You could do a street track successes series where you talk about the true home of the Canadian Grand Prix... No, not that one, and not that one either. The GP3R. We have a fascinating city street track in the city of Trois-Rivières, Québec (Three Rivers) which is in a fairground district, which runs through a historic archway that's barely a car width wide, at fairly high speeds. It also checks the 90° street circuit corner box. It is also used in winter for a NitroRX rallycross. Many of the people who race there are personal friends of mine who I talk to relatively often. Then there's Toronto's Honda Indy layout... IndyCar series cars reaching nearly 200 mph on a city street circuit is pretty cool. The rest of the layout is actually rather flowing, though I think it does check the 90° corner box at one point. Ironically, I know the GP3R layout better, despite having walked around the Honda Indy layout. On the topic of failed city street circuits, the city of Barrie, Ontario had major karting championships on its city streets. Also, if you ever do a series on under-appreciated national rallies, Rally of the Tall Pines in Bancroft, Ontario is glorious. The rally is the most challenging, grueling test of car control that I can think of, when the roads are a mix of mud, snow, wood (iron bridge has wooden floor) ice, gravel, and tarmac, every single year, it's brilliant.
I could do a series on successful street tracks. Cool to hear that you've walked on the Toronto Street Track. GP3R is heavily underrated in my opinion. The national rally series is unlikely to be something I do on this channel. However, I'll definitely look that up though. Sounds very interesting and difficult.
Some extra info about the track: As of 2020, it looks like there was some sort of street karting event which was done at the track area (you can see some of the painted areas for the Formula E track in this onboard) loruclips.net/video/HziwS0v55L0/видео.html Also, I found some footage for the track used in the 80's, though it looks like some sort of amateur recording of the race ruclips.net/video/sZMLUpXI8so/видео.html
Thanks for the added information. Cool to see that the place still has a passion for racing. The 80's track footage has been linked by a few other people. I'm annoyed at myself for not including that in the video.
Kuala Lumpur had street circuit done for V8 Supercars and in 2015, 5 cars do a showcase event with a round being starting the following year with by memory a 6 year deal done that never came to fruition due to money I believe.
Newcastle I believe will be the first round of the Australian Supercars this year. Albeit I could be wrong. Zurich is a good contender at being featured in this series.
Well, the track made a return two weeks ago to host a round of the National Karting Championship. It proved to be a success venture, more than 200 drivers raced at PDE
Punta del Leste deserved another chance with Formula E. I wonder how much it costs to host this race. Certainly much less than the Football World Cup they want to host in 2030. I hope this race comes back one day, it's a great place to host races.
Gosh, at 5:57, that's why sausage curbs should just be deleted from racing as a whole. (Currently binge watching the playlist.) We've had enough reasons as to why in modern times that they're bad (Peroni's 2019 Monza crash, Abbie Eaton's COTA 2022 injury, the #33 Aston Martin flip at Monza in 2022, and SIlverstone's 2022 F2 what-could-have-been-fatal crash with Nissany), and yet no one saw how bad these were when Sam Bird's session was ended and mechanics had to go to work just because he lost rear grip, hit the curb that launched him into the air, and ended up in the wall?? There's a line between losing rear grip and hitting a wall to cause race ending damage, but not in a CHICANE.
Boi do I want to see Punta del Este back with current Gen3 cars, imagine how scary it would be to try to nail those chicanes with lightweight Gen3 equipped with 350kW motor on full tap.... Also imagine expecting no punterino on an FE race 😂
That's why I feel this track will never return to Formula E, unless it's revised, which probably means less of the chicanes. This track has the Jimmy Broadbent seal of approval...... maybe.
If they got rid of the T5-T6 chicane, I think the circuit would have been better, with a long run to the next braking zone, for better overtaking. Still a good Formula E circuit, and a great location. I'd like to see it back again.
The later version of this circuit was specifically designed with Formula E in mind, which requires lots of braking zones in quick succession to recharge the batteries, which is why there's so many chicanes. Not a great circuit imo, too stop-start and narrow, like most FE circuits.
PDE was such a good circuit (especially by Formula E standards), I hope it comes back some day just maybe with a couple of chicanes removed for Gen 3 😂
Punta del Este surely would be a better track if it was designed for Gen 3 cars in mind. At least Formula E returns to SA real soon with São Paulo! (btw im from Brasil so im extra happy for this, last time they raced here was Santiago in early 2020)
@@tydyeracinggaming4742 Not really. I know he's a bit off-topic, but I couldn't think of a better name to illustrate that blend of glossy modern presentation versus trying anything once because you just don't give a fuck.

They racing on full layout of monaco is already a huge achievement
Long straights also shed more energy to drag, which means less can be regenerated.
That's why I think this circuit was as good as it was, when you take into account the car's technological boundaries the track designers had to deal with.
These cars actually look good though, unlike today’s rolling abortions.

Punta Del Este was my absolute favourite Formula E track. Far from perfect, but always fun!
The races were really entertaining to watch back. The track seemed to work really well on the most part.

It would've been interesting to see what the Gen2 cars would've raced like on that track in real life.
Sam Bird reacting to his own car crashing at 6:00 😂

"The Monaco of..." Can be interpreted as both a compliment and an insult in racing.
In this case I meant the scenery, although how it's interpreted is up to the viewer to decide.
The last race there was an absolute blast. Probably one of the best FE races.
The race in 2018 was awesome to watch.
buenos aires had 2 street circuit "failures"
the first one for TC2000 in 2013, the track had the first sector in av. 9 de julio(the widest street in the world) and around the obelisk

I believe that's the first time someone's requested the TC2000 Buenos Aires track. Both tracks could very much feature in this series.

We've had enough reasons as to why in modern times that they're bad (Peroni's 2019 Monza crash, Abbie Eaton's COTA 2022 injury, the #33 Aston Martin flip at Monza in 2022, and SIlverstone's 2022 F2 what-could-have-been-fatal crash with Nissany), and yet no one saw how bad these were when Sam Bird's session was ended and mechanics had to go to work just because he lost rear grip, hit the curb that launched him into the air, and ended up in the wall??
I think that would make for a better track passing wise. It would be cool to see it return.
I rather enjoyed this track in its Formula E layout. Reminded me of the old CART Surfer's Paradise street course from the mid 1990s.
The later version of this circuit was specifically designed with Formula E in mind, which requires lots of braking zones in quick succession to recharge the batteries, which is why there's so many chicanes. Not a great circuit imo, too stop-start and narrow, like most FE circuits.
I think it produced great races and was a challenge, although I wish there were less chicanes.
Saudi Arabia took notes before building the F1 GP Layout
Congrets to 10k 🎉
This Entire series is: "I couldn't find an official reason', but i'll have a guess why.
You could add the Alemannenring to the series
This track will more than likely feature in this series.
This was a cool track. It would be ridiculous with the Gen 3 cars and the general lack of grip those cars have and the dusty nature of the circuit.
I think it would be cool to see the Gen3 cars race round there, however I'm not sure it would work quite as well with these cars as the Gen1 or Gen2.
Hey if you ever want to take a look at Boston's street race fiasco I'm more than happy to help you out.
I appreciate the offer. I'll see whether a video on Boston's attempted street race is something people would be interested in seeing.
PDE was such a good circuit (especially by Formula E standards), I hope it comes back some day just maybe with a couple of chicanes removed for Gen 3 😂
I think that track with a few less chicanes would work pretty well for Formula E's Gen3 car. Would be cool to see the track return though.
Punta del Este surely would be a better track if it was designed for Gen 3 cars in mind. At least Formula E returns to SA real soon with São Paulo! (btw im from Brasil so im extra happy for this, last time they raced here was Santiago in early 2020)
I'm developing a real taste for Formula E. It's like if modern racing was run by Roger Corman.
That's certainly not a name I thought I would see in the comment section of this video. Is it bad that I had to search up who he was?
@@tydyeracinggaming4742 Not really. I know he's a bit off-topic, but I couldn't think of a better name to illustrate that blend of glossy modern presentation versus trying anything once because you just don't give a fuck.
🙋👉Could you do A video Talking about ARGENTINIAN ACTC Cars?
And how they are COMPLETELY different from the rest of the world
I can certainly look at doing a video on that if people would be interested.
Plz do baku city challenge
That track's been requested a few times before. Will more than likely feature in this series.
Plz no punterino, TyDye
Please no Punterino!
Why do people still watch FE, there's so much wrong with it
Dear TyDye RacingGaming and anyone reading i hope all is well. I just want to say that Jesus Christ loves and cares for you. If you haven't done so please accept Him as your savior and Lord. And remember to enjoy and cherish all that is good and right in life for we only get one life and we don't know what tomorrow will bring.
Having watched all of your Sweet Track videos in a row, may I suggest one on the "Allemannring" in Singen, Germany, where DTM raced in the 90´s? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alemannenring
That track has been requested more and more recently. I imagine that'll become a future episode.
