- ►2019 was a phenomenal year for FCP Euro and its motorsports team. Fielding two cars in the SRO TC America championship lead to a crushing manufacturers and drivers championship at seasons. Unfortunately, Volkswagen decided to leave the championship on a high note and elected to forego production of a new Mk8-based GTI touring car, or so we thought. Friend of FCP Euro and Orchid Euro owner, Jamie Orr, took a trip to VW's secret warehouse and discovered the singular functioning prototype Mk8 TCR racer unreleased by VW Motorsports.
The Mk8 TCR represents what could've been for VW and FCP Euro Motorsports, say, maybe another championship or two. Although that never happened, VW was kind enough to ship the prototype over, along with their one-of-one Golf A59, and give it to FCP Euro for a day at Lime Rock Park. With FCP Euro Motorsports Director and former driver of the #72 FCP Euro Motorsports Golf TCR Nate Vincent at the wheel, watch as we get to know the prototype and put it through its paces.

That car didn't kill VW motorsports. VW still trying to make ammends for the emissions scandal they had a few years back is what killed VW motorsports.

I feel like a more fitting title would be "the car that died with VW motorsport". Jamie Orr is an incredible person, and it was really nice to meet him on multiple occasions. I know he was busy at the L'oe Show, VAG fair, ect over the last few years- but he always made time to speak to me and my group of friends that accompanied me. Was able to see this and the A59 in person (dont tell anyone, but I touched em)- and coming from a background in mechanical engineering- they're both really impressive in person.
So glad you got a chance to see both the A59 and Mk8 TCR in the flesh...and don't worry, your secret is safe with us, and literally everyone else who watches this video 🤫😁
I love TCR I wish the US embraced it more and I know of Pilot Challenge. We run a TCR series weekly in RaceRoom.

We had an old BTCC Toledo/Leon Supercopa Hybrid built by Seat Sport UK using the spares bin with a TDi engine. Those Toledo's had the exact same Camber and Toe adjustment as the Mk8 and Gen 2 Leon TCRs in 2004ish. When you have 3 or 4 races a day you don't have time for strings! Thanks for the video, I did a much less professional version looking around our RS3 TCR!
What a splendid video and what an opportunity to learn more of the MK 8 TCR race car that never was. I really hope that VAG eventually makes it back to TCR world or a similar world-class homologated tourism racing series. In the meantime, I will keep on racing my MK 7 TCR and enjoying it every second.

I’m a massive VW Golf fan 🙌 got a MK7R with FBO’s and E85 600HP and I just absolutely love soo seeing this was amazing seen some other companies with pictures but see it and hear it so amazing thank you
Unfortunately, the Mk8 TCR is a casualty of the overall direction of the business. We were disappointed to find out it had even existed in the first place, and now after having spent time with the car even more disappointed since it is such a huge step up in competition and performance!

They killed this because of their focus on electric power. They pulled out of the TCR completely, worldwide.
Sad really because it meant Audi, Seat etc were gone too. For a few years VW won championships etc.
I think it's death knell was dieselgate.
What a thing though. I'm extremely disappointed. When I see the series in the US it is dominated by Hyundai. ...

Really sad vw mk8 tcr never got into proper production. Im so so happy with my mk8gti from Malaysia and hope to replicate that tcr brake air ducts for my time attack in sepang international circuit.

They did make a limited production Golf TCR Edition. So I am a little confused when you said that they never made a production version of the Gold TCR. what makes this prototype tcr so special?
Love the beauty of engineering. Sad they didn't go through with the project. I wonder if there's a reason for it.
There really is something magical about proper touring car engineering at its finest. A shame VW left motorsport as a whole, and this being the last glimmer of hope left behind.

What's the difference between this and the blue cars that VW South Africa was racing?
The "GTC" cars in South Africa are quite different. As quick as we can:
TCR cars are a global specification for FWD-only touring cars. They have a spec wing and splitter, as said in the video, and all make around 350hp. They are based on the factory chassis, and carry over quite a few parts from the street cars most of the time.
The GTC cars raced in South Africa are a class that is only raced in South Africa. The cars are a space-frame (aka tube fame) chassis, with a Golf body placed on top - but perhaps most interestingly, they are a longitudinal located engine (the standard GTI is transverse) and the GTC car is also rear wheel drive...and makes something like 600hp. Both very cool cars, but very different from each other.

Ya, they are some beautiful pieces of engineering as well but much different as they are GTC cars not homologated TCR's.
They need to sell these!

@@fcpeuro TCR is dead ....the name TCR will never be on a Golf again. Only the MK 7.5 was branded and sold outside the USA in a TCR Version.
VW is also thinking to stop the Golf production. Forever.

The TCR is a really cool car. What it puts down on paper definitely translates to your own hands while driving. BUT it’s expensive, and for it’s expense, there is just way more thrill to be had with a RWD platform.
TCR and GT4 race cars are about the same price and do about the same laptimes AFAIK. Given GT4s are based on more exotic cars like Caymans and AMG GTs, the running costs for things like engines and body panels are probably a bit higher.
I mean, why?
Man.... VW and their Motorsport division really, really dropped the ball. Their embrace of the illogical, unsustainable electrictrification movement is such a gut punch to those of us who love cars. Technology improving is always cool, but at the expense of the driving experience and driver control? No thank you.
Just so happy i got to buy the GTI Clubsport MK7 back in 2017 here in Europe, Sweden. Before VW decided to drop the ball for real car fans! Still own it & keep modding alittle year by year. You can check some vids on my build browsing my channel.

Our best guess is that as they are part of a much larger group, other brands (Audi, Porsche, SEAT, Lamborghini) were allowed to continue with ICE motorsport projects, but VW was moved away from this and focused on electric.
