Would you say art education is needed Mr Bush? After almost 10 years of painting and learning various techniques and tricks, information regarding color theory and how light affects objects, I feel comfortable with how I paint, I don't consider myself a master, there's so much to learn. But sometimes I just feel like I'm a collection of tips and tricks that work with what I do.Not something organized. Is there a benefit in having art education? Also, would you consider digital art and photography essential to illustration?
Great questions! The answer is different for everyone. The truth is an artist needs to eductae themselves to go pro. Some artists are able to do that on their own and find their own outsource studies and pathway. Some go to school where it's a plan you're able to follow. It really just depends on the person. I went to school, and certain aspects were really helpful. Others aspects I had to learn with my own research and studies anyway. You're absolutely right that the one problem with learning only from youtube- while you do have an endless sea of great content, artists are usually cherry picking what they like. So instead of something organized with a full arsenal of what you need, you end of with a limited bag of tricks that will only do you so good. As an illustrator, you don't have to work fully digital, but having the ability to send files digitally and be able to work within the digital world we live in (social media, etc) is essential. :)
I don't really have a method, usually just try to find colors that match or purposely separate elements if the outlining helps do that. Mostly it's for what I call pizzazz! LOL. Glad that's helping- I actually have some new Monochrome Demo videos dropping soon! :). \m/

How did you choose which pencils to use when outlining stuff in your pieces?
Also the monochrome sketch trick has been immensely helpful.
