  • This lecture provides context to Joseph Conrad's 1899 novella, The Heart of Darkness. The very techniques Conrad uses, including employing a morally unreliable narrator, give us a clear sense of the confusion among the very powers claiming to be enlightened even while they act, encouraged by social Darwinism, towards a desperate push to conquer Africa and defeat their rivals in order to demonstrate their fitness to survive.
Moral concerns are set aside in the name of a single-minded 'efficiency'.

Are you aware of Jonas Salks book, The Survival of the wisest?
He was the creator of the vaccine for something or other.
