Amazing cover Earl! That's for sure not an easy groove! A demonstration of your skills! That fill around min3 is so powerful! And the best is just continue drumming after the song. So everybody can hear your kit really perfect!🤘🤘🤘
Thanks for the feedback and watching Pat! This is my 1979 Gretsch kit that I purchased in 1979. It still sounds great. I’m blessed to have a concert tom kit to play my favorite songs that dead drum sound! 👍🏻🥁🙏🏻
Sounded great to me, Earl. Pretty darm close. You got the vibe. That's the right approach. Zildjian day 1983 Chicago. Kenny demoed this fill. Pretty cool being there. Later that year, I talked to a sax player from IU who was in college with him. "Yeah, Kenny's like a real serious fusion player. And classical too." Never forgot that conversation.
Thanks for watching Jim! Yea, it’s great listening to Kenny tell his story about that drum break. It’s an awesome piece of studio magic! That drum machine is the song without that drum break section! He is an amazing all around drummer. I met one of his classmates from IU on a plane once who told me a similar story!
Finally, a song that I am familiar with. Anyway, that was awesome, as it had a bunch of parts in it starting with the hats, kick, and china before going into that great chorus, but to me, the icing on the cake was when you went from the hats to the floor toms. That was really cool, and then you used that same combination on your Earlism. Well played, my hammering friend.🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the feedback Greg! This is a classic MTV favorite. I tried to be true to the recording as much as possible! Thanks for watching my friend! 🙏🏻👍🏻🥁😊
Awesome job Earl, I had the opportunity to me KA in the 80s, what a super nice guy and awesome drummer. Loved both the part you created instead of the drum machine and the breakdown.
Excellent cover on this Earl !! To me you play every song better than the original !! I love the extended play it lets me hear how good your kit sounds without the music! You are the best! 💙👍🙏😃🥁
I heard this a ways back (maybe after lockdowns and all that crap) and I really did think of you! This seemed like a song that would fit your perfectly and damn does it ever. I forgot about the main groove too. Earl spin = excellent as always dude 💯💯
Thanks for the feedback and encouragement Trey! The funny thing about this song is you have play the breakdown close to exact, I never wanted to learn that break! But I broke down and learned it! 😊 thanks for watching!
Hi Earl. John Mellencamp was sued in civil court to stop using "John Cougar" because there already was a musician by that name. Just a fun fact that I suspect you already know. No response needed. Great drumming. I did attended a concert of his back in the 1990's. Had a great time!
I heard the story you referred to in the description told by Kenny A more than once. I have been to several of his clinics. Very nice person and great drummer. I was looking to see if you switched your rack toms like he does. The lower of the two rack toms to the left and the small one to rhe right. There is a fun story behind him switching the toms too. Great job and thanks.
D thanks for watching! I almost did switch it! Then I thought how would that effect the backwards fill in the breakdown? Did he play it that way in the studio? Then I got lazy and said this setup will do! 😁😁😂😂😂😂 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
That's a great story behind the recording of this song, and I actually saw this story via video (youtube) not that long ago, great stuff! I'm always amazed at how you can take a song (especially one so popular) and play it with YOUR spin on it?! If I really I know a song, ...what I've heard before, and how it's played, just sticks in my head and I can't get it out! 😃 Anyhow, great job, way to abuse that China! Not a huge fan of Paiste china's, they tend to not be trashy enough for me, but that was sounding sweet, for sure! Great job, Earl! P.S. Did you forget a 14 floor tom in there ?! 😜 🥁😎👍
Jeff, I tried to get it close. But the main groove is a Linn LM-1 drum machine! The drum breakdown is the song! I got it as close as I could … the last take I went HH 3 e&a FT on 4. Every other take it was snare and FT on 4! This was the only take I got the 4 trip let right! So everything just felt good and it had that Earl factor on it! I guess you can’t run from how you play! My best takes always have some of me on it it because reading a transcription chart is not me! Last week I saw KA demonstrate this fill again in video and I said … I have to do this track. Now I have! By the way I have a bunch of nasty wuhan chinas! And I had to leave you a crumb today! 😁😂 thanks for watching!
That was great…you killed it. And that extended play is pure gold!!!!
🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Thanks for the feedback John! I enjoy the Earlisms and fade out stuff … that’s how I know it’s the take!🙏🏻👍🏻🥁😊

@@earldrum was it saxophonist Bill Sears by any chance? That's whom I had played with and talked with about Kenny.
