- The most glorious voice to ever come out of Poland, contralto Ewa Podleś singing Marquise of Birkenfeld's aria Pour Une Femme De Mon Nom in Gaetano Donizetti's 1840 opéra comique La Fille Du Régiment. The principal role of Marie is sung by Mariella Devia and Tonio is taken up by tenor Paul Austin Kelly. Filmed in 1996 in Milan, Italy with Teatro Alla Scala chorus and orchestra conduced by Donato Renzetti.

she's able to project that low Bb and I can barely project the C above that as a male (high tenor).

Ewa Podles voice is like a Hurricane,Tornado or Ryphoon,it is a force of nature,and as such you can only sit and be completely in awe of it!

She's a contralto
@@LipoMaae94 Mezzo. She said in an interview that she started off as a soprano (which you can hear in early clips) and her voice deepened to a mezzo post-pregnancy. Her tessitura sits too high to be a contralto and her voice is not nearly dark enough.
@88 Kk she’s more of a coloratura contralto. Her voice doesn’t sit low enough to be a dramatic contralto but is jut under a dramatic mezzo.
@@KajiVocals literally one of the darkest female voices in opera you could find. She sings lightly here because the style requires it but listen to her russian arias for contralto. Every now and then you could swear it's a baritone.
She has the range and has the agility to do these things but she most definitely is a contralto.
@@jodavitow Nothing that came out of her mouth has ever sounded even like a tenor. It might only sound like a low voice for an untrained ear. Having chest notes does not make you a contralto. Ghena Dimitrova’s chest voice is more masculine than Podles’ ever. And Dimitrova is a soprano. Podles is a mezzo. And every golden-age mezzo and contralto had a darker voice. I could list many, many names. Me calling Podles a mezzo has nothing to do with her range. She could have her top at C5 and I’d still call her a mezzo. Her timbre, passaggi, tessitura all scream mezzo.
And the Bb at the end is badass.

Two-and-a-half minutes' gem! As well as the entire performance. Check it out, there is a full version here on RUclips (tenor is not particularly impressive, but Podles and Devia sing wonderfully). And a great balance between singing and acting, without sacrificing vocal performance for clowning, as in some later versions.

my favorite 牛 there ever was.
She has the most breathtaking contralto voice since Marilyn Horne... In this aria she uses 3 complete "octaves" (i don't know the english word) which is exceptionnal for a singer from the very low B flat to high B flat !!!!! and I already heard her reaching a high flat D in a cadenza... Amazing !!!!

Very rarely is good performer who could make a big stand up for the Marquise, aside from the lead couple and Sulpice, Podles make the difference that this opera has 4 leading voices to hear ;) She is so great!

How does a female sing that low Bb with any sort of projection. I could never sing that low without a mic and most days the mic won't even pick it up. I am guy as well.

Simple early in her career she was called a mezzo but and she developed her voice it was obviously contralto. So effortless. No hooting!
