  • My home-built boathouse lift. The gear plate winch and rigging is all off the shelf, the cradle was custom built (welded) by me.

Do you have a video on how to install cables? Looks great!

Thanks. I don’t, but I have another lift to set up in the other stall of the boathouse, maybe I’ll get more of the actual installation on video next time. Installing the cables was actually fairly straightforward. Start by drill holes through the pipe, feed about half the cable you need through then run the hoist to wind a few turns (or more depending on how low the cradle needs to go). Then attach and level the cradle.

your cable clamps are on backwards, there is a saying "never saddle a dead horse" the saddle is the molded steel part and it should go on the live line which is taking the load and the u-bolt should go on the dead line. the way you have them they will slip. otherwise nice job

Dain Lanouette it’s tough to see in the video, but this is the way it’s installed.

Very Nice! I'm needing to build one very similar. Where did you buy the gear plate winch and rigging (include brand please)? Thanks

If I recall correctly, I used 4x4 square tubing with a 3/16 wall thickness.

I see the Cable run thru Drive Pole without any alum drive winder to track cable to each side roller. with the Cable going thru the pole Is the cable have any ware problems ???

No wear problems so far. As long as there is some weight on the cables there are no “birds nests”. The cradle itself is a few hundred pounds. The aluminum winders reduce the lifts capacity as the pipe diameter is increased, changing the ratio.
