Love this game. Great rogues gallery and gameplay. Having Felicia is great. Hawkeye and Submariner seemed like strange choices, but it made it feel like a random comic team-up. My only criticism is Spidey's walking animation. He looks depressed - like Gwen Stacy just died earlier that day.

Yeah as a kid I was confused to why Submariner and Hawkeye were both in this game, as neither have much of a connection to Spiderman. They both feel so random. Black Cat and Spiderman teaming up made sense. Looking back I'm surprised they didn't include Iceman and Firestar as the other 2 characters to tie in with Spiderman and his amazing friends. Being a Spiderman game, you'd think they could picked someone more connected to Spiderman instead of two random guys. I think that might helped make this game more popular than two lesser known characters, as I'd imagine most people wanted play as Spiderman over bulk of the cast. I know I did as a kid despite learning who rest were as I got older. I agree the villain side they did a great job of getting an all star line up, as the game looks pretty good and captures the personality of the characters well. I'd wish I saw more of the game as a kid, as I strongly disliked game where simply attacking burns up your health. Especially in Arcade games, as you just run thru quarters quickly. I'd get to second stage and that would be it for me. It's bad enough you're getting beat up by the bad guys, I am sure you'd still died plenty if the game didn't cost you health to attack. This just made me less willing spend my couple quarters I had to play a game with on this title.
Yes you would think they could've picked daredevil or maybe the punisher? I think the punisher was tied up by acclaim. I know the avengers for the most part were and also the X-Men. Sony has the Spiderman videogame license I believe. It would be great if they could work out a deal with Sega and release a collection of Sega's home and arcade Spiderman games.

@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries The sad thing is that there is test footage from the making of the movie where they had a more comics accurate Goblin costume that looked a lot better than what ended up in the final movie.
Great game, I never understood why it never had a console conversion, it would have been possible in the Megadrive a support chip or in the Mega CD and in the 32X they could have done a perfect conversion. How ironic that Hawkeye got selected to be part in this game and "Captain America and the Avengers" due to his lack of popularity making him available. The worst point of the game is the draining health, like Gauntlet no matter how good you were, at the end you had to add more quarters to keep playing.

Sega didn't think The Amazing Spiderman could be done on a Genesis?! That's interesting, I'm guessing this was before Sega dev teams began utilizing the co-processor for more than just backwards compatibility. The Zilog Z-80 co-processor was added to the Genesis at first so that one can play Master System games on it with the Powerbase converter. I don't know the first developer that began utilizing the Z-80 for 16-bit games; However, I do know it was going on in 1992. Yuzo Koshiro utilized the extra hardware for the music in SOR2. Further, I believe it was used with Road Rash 1+2+3, Thunder Force III, and I know for sure this is what made Thunder Force IV a show stopping juggernaut. I think it might have been utilized for the Strike series. Red Zone is another example of the Sega Genesis doing things on stock hardware that was simply unbelievable at the time. Not only does it do full scalling but rotation, Mode 7 type feats and polygons that are buttery smooth (for the time). This would have likely been impossible without that little 8-bit co-processor that could. I know it doesn't seem like much but it really helped with the heavy lifting when it really counted. It's a damn shame Nintendo did not go with the 10 mhz Motorola 68K when they had the chance. Had they done that Sega would have been in real trouble. Always thought Namor and Hawkeye were odd choices. I like both but they don't fit teaming up with Spidey well. They could have gone with the Sandman who was a good guy at the time and maybe others that made more sense. Daredevil would have been perfect but they might not have been able to get the rights. I'm sure they could have used Rocket Racer, Silver Sable, or the Prowler.
Always wanted this game to be ported. I thought the Sega CD Spider-man game was going to be this. Sega made a bunch of Marvel games in the 90's. They should get the rights and do a compilation set.
Best game on System32 hardware! So sad it never got ported to 32x/Saturn. Given Rad Mobile (Gale Racer) came to Saturn (and was also a System32 game) you know they could have pulled off a nice port with little to no compromise.
a local gas station had this, unfortunately the punch button didn't work. the owner never bothered to tell anyone this, and let them put in quarters all the time to try to play it.
Can You Believe Back When Stan Lee was Working at Marvel & Came up With the Concept of Spider Man with Steve Ditko. The Big Wigs at Marvel Almost Turned down the Idea.
You know would have been a couple more B-listers that would have worked better, IMHO, than Hawkeye and Namor? Daredevil and Iron Fist. That way the whole team would be 'street level' heroes. Namor can juggle elephants, he should be punching guys into paste.
@@cysper479 Yah, as a kid it always bugged me that Spidey couldn't climb w/o using up web fluid and falling... Even if he moved slowly it still would have been better.
Love Spider-man on the PS1, and dont mind Robocop2 arcade game, but somehow endless monster bashing in this seemed repetitive and like a souped up Final Fight.
Arcade games that never got ported home make the biggest argument pro-emulation I can think of. If it weren’t for ROMs, games like this would slowly disappear.
PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries absolutely! I’m realizing I missed out on a ton of stuff back then. Whatever you had access to back then was just luck of the draw. My favorite arcade memory was playing Galaxy Force (cant remember if it was 1 or 2) at Disney World and they had the full get up that rotated all around. Sadly, that would never be replicated without the original machine.
It always confused me why Submariner was in this. Why not Daredevil? He and Spider-Man worked together alot more..I think Spidey only interacted with Sub-Mariner like..maybe a handful of times?
I honestly dont get how people can call Spidermans villains as good as Batmans, a good chunk of them are losers that nobody remembers, only 1/3 of them are fully unique, and a few of them get powers form the same source as another and wind up being an Echo Fighter of another like Carnage to Venom and Hob Goblin to Green Goblin and wind up being a Variation of a past villain.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I think a larger take away from this is.....most superheros rouges galleries are kinda shity. I did a scan with a buddy after leaving that comment and we were hard pressed to find any hero be it DC, Marvel, Dark horse, ect that has a really strong roster of villains that are iconic, unique, and dont overlap......the results were kinda depressing ^^;
Wow, the Japanese SEGA execs really missed the boat when they thought Spider man would be "too creepy" as a mascot. Classic cultural misunderstanding. I wonder if they are kicking themselves now that Spiderman is a multinational icon.
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yeah seriously. When you look at that from a modern perspective, it is pretty mind blowing. Its like a Japanese record exec in the 60s not signing the beattles because "Beetles are too creepy and will never catch on."
hsatan20 If it had work out then sonic would never happened. The same whit Nintendo wanting Popeye but when that didn't workout went whit donkey kong which would lead to mario getting his own spinoff and look how that turn out?
I always thought that this would have been the perfect launch title for the Saturn, along with a new Streets of Rage. Maybe if Sega hadn't sh*t the bed and tried to "out polygon" Sony, and instead went full on ham 2D arcade style right at the start of the Saturn's life then we might have got it.
This game is very impressive on every level except one. I hate how you have to fight every character at least twice. Especially with Green Goblin, who each time has a three phase attack. So, six times technically. It feels like a cheap way to expand the game play. As for why Hawkeye... yeah, WHY Hawkeye? I don't see why they didn't use Mr. Fantastic or The Thing, as the game's main villain is Dr. Doom. Did Acclaim hold the license on the Fantastic Four, yet somehow not Submariner or Doom?
I can't really even think of a Fantastic Four video game, actually. I'm sure there are a few. All I can remember is a cameo in one of the SNES Spider-Man games.
Love this game. Great rogues gallery and gameplay. Having Felicia is great.

I'm sure they could have used Rocket Racer, Silver Sable, or the Prowler.
Dave John Sometimes you can only get what you can take. Hawk eye was fine but fish head was a poor choice.
I have the arcade pcb to this
I read the Black Cat.
I've been on the Spider-Man binge myself lately
Always wanted this game to be ported. I thought the Sega CD Spider-man game was going to be this. Sega made a bunch of Marvel games in the 90's. They should get the rights and do a compilation set.
It the O.A.P Spiderman..
I loved this game, always hated that your health would slowly degrade though.
So do I, there are other crap games that do that as well it's just so irritating
Best game on System32 hardware! So sad it never got ported to 32x/Saturn. Given Rad Mobile (Gale Racer) came to Saturn (and was also a System32 game) you know they could have pulled off a nice port with little to no compromise.
Yeah it's unfortunate it never came to any home system
Spiderman on 2600 was actually pretty good considering the hardware at the time.
It was one of my favorite 2600 games And very good for the system
a local gas station had this, unfortunately the punch button didn't work. the owner never bothered to tell anyone this, and let them put in quarters all the time to try to play it.
That's ridiculous!
The thugs you fight in this with the white masks appear to be from the Hellfire Club which were X-Men villains.
Interesting, thank you for the info
Can You Believe Back When Stan Lee was Working at Marvel & Came up With the Concept of Spider Man with Steve Ditko. The Big Wigs at Marvel Almost Turned down the Idea.
It's unbelievable that we would have missed out on all those Marvel characters
What does venom say in the first level when he gets out of the capsule
"Where's the nearest bathroom?"
Who was the exec at Sega of Japan who said spiders were too creepy?
I ADORED this game but wanted Spider-Woman, Speedball and Iceman rather than Namor and Hawkeye
That would have been a much better roster
You know would have been a couple more B-listers that would have worked better, IMHO, than Hawkeye and Namor? Daredevil and Iron Fist. That way the whole team would be 'street level' heroes. Namor can juggle elephants, he should be punching guys into paste.
I agree, daredevil would have been great
2:54 You can play Game Gear games on the Master System?
Yes, of course. Ever heard of the word adapter?
What was with the weird howl from the bad guys? Such a terrible sound effects
If I have four friends to play this game, what will I be doing as the four of them play?
Watching them have fun without you
That “ooo”! Cut through all the other noises at the arcade. I used to find it so annoying. Why did they make such a wimpy noise when they died
LOL, that's a good question
You left out Doctor Octopus!
Thanks for the correction
Peter tingle lmao
LOL :-)
WTF Green Goblin sounds like The Joker in the commercial😂LOL
:) Even Spidey somedays just can't get rid of a bomb!
@@AceD500 haha yah and even he can't finish the game and also many kids couldn't even beat the game back then😂lol
@@cysper479 Yah, as a kid it always bugged me that Spidey couldn't climb w/o using up web fluid and falling... Even if he moved slowly it still would have been better.
LOL, he does you're right. Good call
Love Spider-man on the PS1, and dont mind Robocop2 arcade game, but somehow endless monster bashing in this seemed repetitive and like a souped up Final Fight.
It is like a souped up final fight but is more of a living and breathing comic book
I still don't understand why this has never been ported.
Neither do I
1:48 Why did they not hire this guy to portray the Green Goblin in Spider-Man 1?
LOL, he was awesome in this Commercial. In a comic accurate costume to boot
He’s a great actor seems like he would do his own stunts and the way he wobbles his legs masterful.
Arcade games that never got ported home make the biggest argument pro-emulation I can think of. If it weren’t for ROMs, games like this would slowly disappear.
I agree, and Spider-Man was widespread. Just think about all the games You never got to see in the arcades. They would be lost forever
Gee, wouldn't it be nice if Arcade1up was to put this on their upcoming 4 player sega cabinet...
That would be fantastic
Id buy it!!! And the Xmen arcade game!
@@robd1329 The X-Men arcade game is coming!

@@robd1329 Are you excited?
@@Batman43221 nah...women excite me! ...not a video game console
It always confused me why Submariner was in this. Why not Daredevil? He and Spider-Man worked together alot more..I think Spidey only interacted with Sub-Mariner like..maybe a handful of times?
It doesn't make any sense to me either
I honestly dont get how people can call Spidermans villains as good as Batmans, a good chunk of them are losers that nobody remembers, only 1/3 of them are fully unique, and a few of them get powers form the same source as another and wind up being an Echo Fighter of another like Carnage to Venom and Hob Goblin to Green Goblin and wind up being a Variation of a past villain.
As a longtime fan of Spider-Man I think his rogues gallery is pretty good although nowhere near as good as Batman's
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I think a larger take away from this is.....most superheros rouges galleries are kinda shity. I did a scan with a buddy after leaving that comment and we were hard pressed to find any hero be it DC, Marvel, Dark horse, ect that has a really strong roster of villains that are iconic, unique, and dont overlap......the results were kinda depressing ^^;
What's with Spiderman's posture? 🤣 It's the same as the SNES Spiderman beat-em-up games.
The one character they should get right in the game and it doesn't look like it should.
To be honest I'd happily take Spider-Man games like this over the PS4 game. Just seems to capture the comic better. 😊
Spider-Man was really good in my opinion on the PlayStation 4 but I would much rather have a standard beat them up like this
PS3 font... I see what you did there...
Good set of eyeballs on you :-)
Wow, the Japanese SEGA execs really missed the boat when they thought Spider man would be "too creepy" as a mascot. Classic cultural misunderstanding. I wonder if they are kicking themselves now that Spiderman is a multinational icon.
It's a bit crazy when you think about it
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries Yeah seriously.
I love the game but the quarter munching aspect I hate.
You and me both my friend
I always thought that this would have been the perfect launch title for the Saturn, along with a new Streets of Rage.
Maybe if Sega hadn't sh*t the bed and tried to "out polygon" Sony, and instead went full on ham 2D arcade style right at the start of the Saturn's life then we might have got it.
Definitely. When the shiny new 32-bit systems work first coming out the shift to 3D polygons meant fewer and fewer pixel art videogames
Hawkeye helping Spider-Man I can buy, but Namor? Unlikely.
Your documentary is incomplete does included the black and white hand handle version that ran on AA 🔋 battery
And also the multitude of other games I didn't include, don't forget those
Everybody gets 1
I hated the 2600 spiderman game... could never get to the super bomb at the time. the tiger handheld game with a similar idea was easier to play.
I thought the 2600 version was great
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries The lack of not knowing what to do hurts a lot of 2600 games. I never read the manuals as a kid.
I agree, Anybody but Hawkeye would have been a better choice
I can't really even think of a Fantastic Four video game, actually. I'm sure there are a few. All I can remember is a cameo in one of the SNES Spider-Man games.
