    Thank you for a clear, concise video on making a very useful tool. You do a good job of explaining clearly and then demonstrating what you are talking about.. Please make more videos! From a novice would be machinist.

      Hi Colin, Many thanks, I would have done a video this weekend, but I have been waiting for some new lights for the workshop, they didn't arrive on time. I have just fitted a new wood roof and done some alterations inside to make it easier to do the videos. I hope to do one later this week.....Regards Steve

    I actually like this guy. Shows you can do things without high dollar tooling and spending half an hour making sure stuff is dead on. I make stuff like this. Sometimes par is good enough. You don't have to be dead on nuts accurate. Sometime dead on nuts perfection is a waste of time..... time costs money. Some customers don't want to pay for absolute presision and don't need it.

    its been suggested to use bolts from the front instead of stud,s. I would also thread and counter sink two small bolts into the back plate to keep it always centered to the V groove. Thank you for these great ideas.

    Enjoyed your videos. Wonder if you thought of using a counter sink-headed screw instead of threaded rods to hold the two plates together?
    If front plate was drilled with a bevel to flush mount the counter sink-headed screw you might not need the extender for the center drill. Bit cleaner look and you could get the chuck closer to the front disc of the center drill adapter? Also could have couple extra longer counter sink-headed bolts/screws for larger diameter stock you are drilling?

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  8 лет назад

      +jster1963 Thanks. I didn't explain it in the video, but if you want a hole in an exact position in a piece of bar or a component you are making. You leave the length of the work piece long, use the adaptor to do drilling and tapping, if you need to. Then face off each end until you achieve the hole position that you require. I have done this on items like where you have to line up a small threaded screw hole with an indent on a spindle, you drill and tap the piece so that the depth from the hole to the face is long. Then face off the item gradually until the holes line up. Its a very useful tool and has the ability to achieve great accuracy.

    This + your design for a collet/mini-jacobs in the quick-change are both brilliant. Simple but incredibly useful. Also re-using old iron weights and bars is quite quite clever. Innovative stuff.. Question: for the tapping jig, you wouldn't happen to know where to source one online for someone in the States would you?
    I noticed you had some radial slippage as the 2MT was retained in the tail stock, but the two bolted plates and work spun in unison as the load on your motor/spindle changed (seemed, at least, to be near the starts and stops of the cuts). Not a problem for center drilling, but in the long run your 2MT will get marred up. Also any operation that is axial or collinear, rather than radial, may have issues. An easy fix would be adding a woodruff key on the non-threaded plate/2MT mating surfaces, which will act as a locating and positive retention to take up that play.

    I've just noticed that you made a modification for the spindle lubrication. You have both an oil drip feeder and a wick feed? Can you tell more about this, please?

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  8 лет назад +1

      +Nick Prionas Hi Nick, Yes, I was wondered if anyone would notice them.:-) I made them half way through making this video. At the beginning of the video it shows the normal set-up, but has been changed by the end!
      I made these because of the drip oilers are so unpredictable. I thought it would be a good idea to have both the oil cups and the drip feed. I use the cup to give a shot of oil just at the beginning of a session on the lathe so I can be 100% sure that the bearing is well lubricated and also spend less time adjusting the drip feed.
      My drip feed oilers can be set to work perfectly and left in that setting, but the next day I have to adjust them again to get them to work properly. I find it quite time consuming! I have heard other people saying the same thing, so I presume they are all like this?
      I will do a video next to show how I made and positioned then on the lathe.

    The round mild steel discs are expensive for what they are! I get my metal from metalsupermarket a lot cheaper! If I cut a piece roughly round, put a bar in the chuck with a thread at the end holding the piece (that is already got a centre hole) in place with a nut, would that be a safe way to round it? Hope that made sense? Thanks

      No problem. I am in the process of mounting a flexy drive drill on my cross slide so as long as i can get my work into my lathe chuck i should be able to drill accurately with that. Keep up the good work on the videos. All the best.

    A lot of forums I've read frown at putting drill bits straight in the chuck, have you had any issues? Damaging drill bit, chuck? Runout? Slipping? Thanks

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  7 лет назад

      Hi Shaun, It would be better to use a collet chuck but I have used drills straight in the 3-Jaw chuck ever since I started engineering with no problems. Obviously I always use a centre drill first. Regards Steve.

    what size tooling are you using on your RDG tool post? are you able to get below centre height. I just picked up a tool post but yet to get tooling. for a myford ml7
    thanks for the video :D

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  8 лет назад

      Hi thanks. I use mainly 8mm square turning tools. When I first got the Myford and put the quick change toolpost on I was quite surprised at how small the tools had to be to get the centre height especially the turning tools. I think the biggest boring bar I use is 10mm.

    THE LARGER CROSS DRILLING OR TAILSTOCK ADAPTOR PART TO BE MODIFIED CAN BE BOUGHT FROM www.rdgtool.co.uk OR ON THEIR EBAY SITE. YOU CAN GET IT WITH A 2MT TAPER OR A 1MT TAPER. IF YOU CAN"T GET HOLD OF THE 2MT ADAPTOR YOU CAN BUY THE 1MT VERSION AND USE IT WITH A (2MT to 1MT TAPERED SLEEVE) FOR USE IN THE MYFORD OR CHINESE MINI LATHE TAIL-STOCK. THE STEEL DISCS AND THREADED BAR CAN BE OBTAINED FROM OTHER SELLERS ON EBAY.

    It is "much"' easier to center the part up on a mill or drill press, than to go through that rig-a-ma-ro.

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  Год назад

      I only have a low-cost bench drill and no milling machine, so I do it this way. It's better than the workpiece snatching. Also. I show things like this so that others who don't have mills, etc can see an alternative method.

    high Steve I bought one of the larger cross drilling adaptors but it won't as I thought from your video fit in the mini lathe so I think I have just wasted the cost of the part any ideas? cheers in anticipation Graham

    • @SteveJordan
      @SteveJordan  7 лет назад

      Hi Graham...If its a 2MT taper it will fit. You may have to wind the tail-stock out further or you can shorten the taper. The mini lathe is very limited on tail-stock travel if you fit a full length taper. You can cut the smaller end off enough until it seats in the quill taper....Regards Steve
