I'm so very glad that you're outputing stuff like 6:46 so your channel can visually compete with dudes like Peter McKinnon and look like it was filmed in 2017. I think you're one of the most talented people on RUclips and I'm glad to see the presentation start to slowly get out of that 2005 era vibe.
I have been trying to make a decision and wasn't able to until I saw this video. Also, I have to add that I've been following you guys since the very beginning and I love how far you guys have come. Totally impressed but not surprised. Thanks for all the videos.
Film Riot is my favorite show on RUclips, I've been watching you guys for years! You guys always know how to make great content while being informative and professional! Thank you all for what you do and please don't stop!
Sweet camera... Also, I almost dropped my drink when you used the wansui song, I've been working on a video for weeks to that song. Love it, and Artlist.io is bad ass... Needs more songs, but its a good service.
@@filmriot speaking of sponsor time, it should be called max audio time. Why not balance the audio in such a way that people don't have to crank the audio to hear you talk, then get blown out by the music?
There's something about the Canon image that I just really like. Good review; love how you always film people in interior and exterior environments. Too many camera reviews just show close-ups of flowers and slow-mo shots of nature. I feel a lot of these cameras are suitable for indie narrative work and I'm really considering the C200 for an indie feature. Also, love that Space Jam shirt.
I'm not arguing specs. If you want to argue specs, go to another comment. I have always felt that the canon cameras, since the 5d mark ii and the original 7d, have consistently had very cinematic images, even down to the canon t3i and t2i. The shutter feels very much like film, the colors match well with cinema cameras and film, even the noise is very reminiscent of film grain. Even the low light is good if you don't outright starve the sensor, something a lot of people tend to do with cameras that are "bad in low light". The camera seems great, to me, and looks incredibly cinematic. My t3i that I received in 2011 is still serving me extremely well to this day and is still great all around, so I think it's safe to assume this camera will do the same. I think the c200 is a fine camera, and if you disagree, then cool, I can respect that. Everybody has a preference, and I prefer canon cameras.
I don't know why but I got the feeling that most of the C200 shots here were just slightly out of focus. You present some C200 footage and it's soft, then you go back to your studio image and it's sharp. Over and over again.
I don't think it needs prores as much as a good middle codec. If Canon wanted to cannibalize the C300 MKii, they could probably release a firmware update enabling the same 422 10-bit format found in that camera in the C200. This would be such a powerhouse of a camera if they did end up doing that, although I wouldn't be surprised if they don't end up doing that or wait for a while to do it, and you can be sure it'll be a substantial fee to unlock it.
Caleb Owen They'll never do that, or risk losing a shit ton of money on their C300 line. Canon already painted themselves in a corner with their C series cams, so now they have to restrict features to keep things profitable.
Yeah, one can dream though. I just wonder if Sony and Panasonic might force them into a position that they might consider it to claim more market share. The EVA-1 will have a more manageable codec with 422 and 10-bit, although I'm not 100% sure how that will work out in post since the camera isn't even out yet. The FS7/FS7mkii are both quality cameras in a similar range and have a similar codec. If those cameras are beating out the C300mkii and they're making nothing from that line, it could potentially make sense for them to shut down the C300 line entirely and focus on the C200, with maybe a different camera rounding out their lower end instead of the C100. In reality, you are more likely correct but I think it is interesting to speculate on what could happen. Things keeping changing pretty quickly, I'm wondering if the dust will settle anytime soon (probably not lol).
If I could have any camera it would be this one. Amazing color science, skin rendering, auto focus, and dynamic range. Settling for Fuji at the moment.
Can we replace the default monitor with Atmos Ninja V, Then we can record 10 bit 4:2:2 4k,60p recording @Prores LT. Straight input to FCPX for editing ...... Can you please check and make a video about it ?
I love my c200! I have the c100 mk 2 as well its like the younger skinnier brother. But they cut well together as an A and B cam! To anyone considering this cam its amazing feel free to ask questions. It is too heavy to throw on a consumer gimbal though incase anyone cares haha.
Could you do a episode when using the sony fs100? Showing how to get the most out of the camera like dynamic range and make the flattest picture profile for it. That would be awesome! Love your show, thanks!
The crop slow mo on the C300 MK II is still better quality than the full frame slow mo on the C200. You didn't mention the XF-AVC codec though coming in 2018 for this cam. No one really knows if it will be 422/420 10 bit or 8 bit. If this cam gets 422 10 bit then Canon should give us this MP4 codec, including 4k 60p, in the C300 MK II. Fun vid...
One interesting thing is the canon xc10 and xc15 shoot at a whopping 305mbs bitrate and 4:2:2 color space. I think it's underrated. It's and awesome little travel cam. Surprised the internal on the c200 didn't at least match
Soc Seamon it's mainly because of two things: the sensor of the XC cameras is significantly smaller. The fact that they don't have interchangeable lenses makes it so they don't fall in the same line as the eos cinema cameras. C200 has to stay in line with canon's philosophy. Which means it is better than the C100, but should in no way surpass the C300 mark ii. They do this a lot... Sadly
Agreed Soc, I have an XC10 and if the 4k were 10 bit 422 would be killer, it is 8 bit. I talked to Brent Ramsey of Canon at NAB this year and he actually thought the 4k in the XC10/15 was 10 bit and HD 8 bit. I had to show him online that it wasn't and all of it was 8 bit. C200 should at least match it. The coming codec probably will.
Hey Ryan, great episode, Canon is absolutely killing it right now. But, could you talk more about those anamorphic lenses you were using? I'm in love with the look of anamorphic shooting and would love to know more about them!
Emery Mulligan Sony's actually killing it right now, not Canon. They've been crapping on their customers with feature restrictions to protect their higher-end C series.
Hopefully they will update the firmware at some point to fill all the gaps between the minimal mp4 codec and RAW. I'll watch and wait for that before this camera would ever work for me. RAW way beyond what I want to deal with in post.
Best reviews for video on the net...and most entertaining. Still, I can't talk myself into selling my C300 Mk II for this cam. But I'd sure love that touch screen.
Thanks for the review Film Riot! Would love an in depth look at shooting Anamorphic with a Canon cinema camera like C300 mark ii or C100 with the SLR magic glass. Not sure of the process or workflow, but looks awesome!
can you do a review of some really low budget dslrs - say under $500 - and tell us which ones are worth getting for people who want a good camera on a budget
Awesome Ryan! i love your videos i want to update my camera what camera should be good thats new from music video i have a 60d but i need a major update ?
Heyy, which one gives better/prettier image using raw, c200 or c300ii? I hope you have the answer regardless of the features and muscles and other things of both cameras that I don't care about
My roommate had the EVA. Had a lot of sensor issues and power loss issues. bought it brand new. He switched to a c300 after about a month of shooting with it. It actually deleted one of his cards during a shoot once and he took a big loss on it.
I know I've already posted it. but why not tape a "atomos ninja star" to the top handle and record 1080p 10bit proress (supposedly it does 10 bit out in 1080p, not 100% sure if that 's through hdmi or sdi though)
I'm surprised there wasn't a lot of obvious chromatic aberration in the shots with the SLR Magic anamorphic lenses as it usually pops up with most of their stuff. Then again as the sky looks overcast & that probably helped.
Nice review of the camera. Functionally, it seems to tick boxes. Prores would be a great addition if we scream at Canon for a few months. Personally, not a fan of the color space and image from the camera in daylight scenes. However, the intentionally lit studio environment did look appealing showcasing a better dynamic range. Interested to see future shorts on this camera with lighting plans etc rather than available light. 50D filmstock for outside available light/controlled light is still the winner in my box. (Wink Wink nudge nudge)
The target demographic of this camera is someone specific, but as someone who does a lot of wedding, product, and mini-docs, this camera is a dream. Though I've only had it for 2 weeks, I've used it on a variety of shoots and can say I'm really happy with it so far. As everyone has stated, the lack of a middle codec/10-bit option between mp4 and raw is a glaring omission, but the mp4 holds-up surprisingly well in grading (with care) and the raw is rock-solid. If you do broadcast it's an obvious no-go barring a release next spring of an internal 10-bit, but one-man bands who do a lot of online delivery should absolutely look into this. The dual-pixel AF in combo with the touchscreen and tracking is amazing for certain situations. I owned an Ursa Mini and UMP prior to the c200 and though I loved those cameras, I'm glad I made the switch. Canon color science has always been a big bonus, especially with proper grading, and my experience so far with the c200 is no different.
Does C200 also have auto ISO?! I'm just trying to see whether in a quick run and gun documentary situation this camera can use AF and Auto Exposure to shoot something quick like a DSLR in Auto mode but with C-Log on either RAW or its 150mbs modes. Great video and thanks!

ghostpictures that depends on the work you do. For run and gun situations the c200 is a far better camera. But for broadcast and studio work the BUMP is a better camera. Again like any other camera there's not any in this price range thats "better" than another as many people online would make you believe its all about preference and needs
