I'm seeing this comment on the wrong video somehow. That, or someone pinned a comment on someone else's video. And people are talking about Majora's Mask on a video of Donkey Kong Country 2 music.
I feel that this is brushed aside a lot but the Hero of Time Link seems to be the most depressing out of all the Links. Despite his heroic actions in Hyrule and Termina, barely anyone took notice which made him a forgotten hero somewhat. And the fact the Hero's Spirit in Twilight Princess laments on not being remembered as a hero truly makes this Link one of the most tragic.
Pretty human flaw too, the greedy history of the land cost him his parents and in return he's forced to fight for it but receives no acknowledgement of it because none of it happened in the end. He takes the role of a healer and guardian in MM but who was there to heal him?
@@dr.metroid6119 yeah like after link saved the world she didn't think to give link a new purpose in life but instead link was in a cycle of depression shown in majora's mask with now with no purpose link thinks its the end of his world hints why that world has 3 days to live.

One thing that I always liked is that the game seems to be hinting at the 5 stages of grief with the different areas you explore. The whole game seems to be set up as the passage of grief from link because of the loss of Navi. I’ve also seen theories say that link died in the forest while looking for Navi and Majora’s Mask is him coming to terms with his fate, as he appears later in twilight princess in a similar fashion to the enemies you fight in ocarina in the woods. Not sure how much I buy that theory as canon but it’s really fun to think about!
I actually realized that EVERY Zelda game outside of age of calamity is a depressing story. No matter what you do, everyone ends up getting slain at the hands of an evil that doesn't die.... Link and zelda are cursed to forever repeat the endless cycle of fighting Ganon and whatever else the malice uses, and thousands of innocents will lose their lives each time. A fate as inevitable as that scary ass moon crashing into clock town.....

I truly understand that every theory about MM is important to make the game a bit more of an artistic expression than a full children's game. "You have a lot of friends, how many of these friends consider you a friend?" made me cry when I read it for the first time. But hey, important facts: 1 - japanese culture is very specific when it comes to dealing with death, relationships, being thankful, etc. They've also normally find amusement in very depressive subjects. 2 - the time constraints explain a lot of "holes" in the story. One of the best games I have ever played
I just wanted to comment on how much love I have for this game! When my little brother and I were young we always go to our neighbours who were a couple years older and they had a N64 and a GameCube! We played lots of Zelda while we watched which was amazing when you are young. I clearly remember we couldn't defeat Gyorg and we didn't knew how to obtain the Song of Storms. So we had to wait for a family birthday at my neighbours, when an much older nephew of them helped us while we were watching in awe. Amazing memories. Also playing a lot of Mario 64, Mario Kart Double Dash and of course Super Smash!
During the development of Majora's mask there was suppose to be a mask to make Link an adult and there are even screen captures with said mask. But the idea of making Link an adult was discarded, but not at all since later that mask became the Fierce Deity's mask.
Found your channel at random with the algorithm, you deserve a sub. Appreciate the hard work and passion you put in. I listen to RUclips videos while I work and while I can't watch I do listen and am now on a second video, enjoying your channel, thank you
I remember this being my first LoZ game I played when I was 5 and I got my GameCube. There was just something about it on the LoZ collection that released on the GC that got my attention. I never really beat it till years later because I could never figure out what to do after the first day but it always stuck in the back of my mind and it still does now. It’s my favorite LoZ game and the only one that came close was Twilight Princess but it still didn’t hit the same notes. I still play MM at least once a year in fall. Gonna start up my next play through soon
I don't know how but I've never heard that theory about the Skull Kid going to Hyrule after being bannished. Pretty satisfying explanation as I always thought that story Gramma tells about him and the giants odd.
I think I understand the answer referring to the fierce. D mask, what he's saying is that we Essentially turn into the metaphysical representation of the hero that saved all the people within termina Even though our deeds are forgotten we aren't really forgotten to history itself. And I believe that's what the mask is meant to represent a forgotten hero.
I love Mentok's storytelling! How you use you those audio clips & video clips at just the right time for maximum comedy. That's why I had to subscribe. A true Nintendologist who knows his stuff. Salute, brother.
Interesting how someone can make a video that seems good with zero substance. Don’t be fooled. This review is what is depressing. If MM depresses you it’s because you are asleep.
This video is SO good omg. I LOVE the way you use lore about all of the Zelda games and go into so much detail. This video is a 10/10 and needs WAY more views. Have you ever played PHANTOM HOURGLASS? I think he finds Navi again after she figured out that she is the spirit of courage or something like that. Can you do a video about the lore of all the games that might be connected or maybe a timeline? I would love to see that ❤
Solid video, you were, iirc saying Tael’s name wrong tho. They should’ve just spelled it Tale and been done with it, because his and Tatl’s names are a play on words of the phrase “tattle tale”. I could be wrong on the pronunciation too I guess tho.
Link's Awakening was about a dream world that Link was pulled into, and the Boss was actually trying to keep the Wind Fish asleep so everyone wouldn't die. But the dream had to end and if you do it without dying, Marin, the dream incarnation of Malon and the inspiration for her for the designers for her in Ocarina of Time, will suddenly appear with wings so she can fly as she always wanted. I am entirely able to believe that Termina was created by the mask and it is incredibly sad to consider that once again all those we became attached to are about to vanish.
This is one of my favorite Zelda games ever, but I could never 100% it. I still planned to do it for a while, but last week i opened it and didnt know anything anymore. Think i need to star again
What an absolute masterpiece of a story! In just ONE year. Then you have them working on TotK for 6 or 7 years and a poorly done BotW reboot is all that comes out... So disappointing
"Kafei and Anju, the only sidequest that will take the entire three day cycle to complete" nah but you're forgetting the Postman's mask! That takes the whole 3 days as well, technically, because it's parallel with Anju and Kafei's quest.
I guess this represents the madness of knowing the future and conflict of to change or not to change and the reason he doesn't have his faery is because she is probably stuck in the future waiting for link to catch up...Zelda sent link back to the past but not Navi...link has 7 years or more to wait imagine all the choices he has to decide on and funny thing is he actually talks to the witches and helps them... the question is what new reality happened?
a lil fact: if you just play the song of healing, you will actually begin to run down through your bad memories and regrets As low keys, notes and registers makes us more emotional contrary to high notes that makes us cheerful, the song itself its very psychologically therapeutical for that sole reason You can come to terms with yourself hearing the song itself, its up to you to accept what happened, and how you process it
I struggled to play this one as a kid because all the narrative devices went over my head and I just wanted to be Adult Link exploring new temples and getting new items. Looking back I respect the makers for trying to turn what was essentially a money grab into a passion project. . . But I still have a hard time recognizing it as the legitimate follow up to Ocarina
What if the "imp" mentioned wasn't Skull Kid, but majora itself? What if the "friend" was majora, and it's angry at being alone and banished for so long? Skull Kid, having been Majora's host, saw some of those memories and thought they were his own. And Link, when given the Fierce Deity masks, now has the potential to become an entity similar to majora and the 4 guardians.
i've had that same dream about the moon falling to the earth but i don't know where my brain picked up the idea could be this game could be an old movie who knows, it's a messed up dream tho
Interesting that the origin of the name was Mu-Jura. Japanese has sounds and symbols for Ma(マ), Jo(ジョ),and Ra(ラ), so I’m surprised it wouldn’t just be spelled out that way instead of Mujura (ムジュラ)
That passage in the encyclopedia shows how it can't be trusted as a canon source, anyone who's played the game knows that there are two cut scenes that immediately debunks the 'it was a glorified fever dream' theory, Termina absolutely existed long before Skullkid ever became a victim of Majora's Mask!
Very well made video, absolutely love this game. Doing a photography project sort of inspired by the masks of the game so I wanted to revisit the world through video essays and found this, loved it. Keep up the great work.

I was shocked, I didn't understand what was happening but the tune was depressing me, it was like as if I found a lost piece of my soul
I opened the comments and saw the legendary words 'Legend of Zelda' and immediately remebered the game
I started to tear up and cry, as I remembered everything.
What i love so much about this Game is that the World feels so alive . So much emotions
A true Masterpiece and my favorite Game of all Time ❤
During the development of Majora's mask there was suppose to be a mask to make Link an adult and there are even screen captures with said mask. But the idea of making Link an adult was discarded, but not at all since later that mask became the Fierce Deity's mask.
Found your channel at random with the algorithm, you deserve a sub. Appreciate the hard work and passion you put in. I listen to RUclips videos while I work and while I can't watch I do listen and am now on a second video, enjoying your channel, thank you
I love how Tatl and Tael’s names sound like “tattletale” it’s such a neat pun
I remember when I was six and my dad got me the Zelda collection on GameCube and I spend like an hour trying to stop the moon was falling 😭😭😭😭😭
Truly one of the games of all time ♥
Great review! I thoroughly enjoyed it.. and love this game .
Does anyone realize the part with the father and daughter is because he was gone so long she didnt recognize him?
I think I understand the answer referring to the fierce. D mask, what he's saying is that we Essentially turn into the metaphysical representation of the hero that saved all the people within termina
Even though our deeds are forgotten we aren't really forgotten to history itself.
Navi going missing becomes Links spiritual navigator, the chase to be the hero makes him become a much bigger hero.
When I was a kid I’d just put on all the different masks and make up my own story! The zora mask was my favorite
Always got freaked out at the transformation scenes…..glad I could skip them. A lot of this game was on mute for me as a kid bc I kept getting scared
This game is so well thought out by the creators. Such a masterpiece.
I like to not believe in what the Encyclopedia says.
We see Skill kid playing with the fairies in the field in a cutscenes without Majora's Mask
Wasn’t even born when this game came out and he says I should feel old
Link's Awakening was about a dream world that Link was pulled into, and the Boss was actually trying to keep the Wind Fish asleep so everyone wouldn't die.
I could see Termina being a representation of Skull Kid's trauma.
I like the theory that the game is about link dying and being in limbo
Majora's Mask and Skyward Sword have the best stories
This is one of my favorite Zelda games ever, but I could never 100% it. I still planned to do it for a while, but last week i opened it and didnt know anything anymore.
Think i need to star again
Should of talked about where the design choice for the aliens. It's rather interesting.
Played this masterpiece on my 3DS when I was 8, loved it since
Playing it again on my phone. Then MM. It still 🔥
I’ve always wanted to go back to Termina. I just played this again on my Switch. 100% game completion in the first run.
The best asset flip to ever exist
I never liked majors mask when I was a kid but love it now when I got older
What an absolute masterpiece of a story! In just ONE year. Then you have them working on TotK for 6 or 7 years and a poorly done BotW reboot is all that comes out... So disappointing
"Kafei and Anju, the only sidequest that will take the entire three day cycle to complete" nah but you're forgetting the Postman's mask! That takes the whole 3 days as well, technically, because it's parallel with Anju and Kafei's quest.
We need to talk about how well made this video is
I guess this represents the madness of knowing the future and conflict of to change or not to change and the reason he doesn't have his faery is because she is probably stuck in the future waiting for link to catch up...Zelda sent link back to the past but not Navi...link has 7 years or more to wait imagine all the choices he has to decide on and funny thing is he actually talks to the witches and helps them... the question is what new reality happened?
I wish they could bring MM 3DS to the Switch as they streamlined a lot of issues i had from the 64 version
Is it just me, or did other people notice that the fairies are essentially named Tattle and Tale.
Most of us noticed it. You must be a new Majoras mask player lol
That’s kinda the point of naming them that lol
Congratulations, you cracked the code
a lil fact: if you just play the song of healing, you will actually begin to run down through your bad memories and regrets
As low keys, notes and registers makes us more emotional contrary to high notes that makes us cheerful, the song itself its very psychologically therapeutical for that sole reason
You can come to terms with yourself hearing the song itself, its up to you to accept what happened, and how you process it
My mind thought that the toilet with the hand was the pre-evolution of skibbi toilet or the og skibbi toilet.
Its been 23 years since this game came out and you should feel old.
Me: >:( Damn whipper snapper
Pamela’s story makes me cry. I miss my father😢
i've had that same dream about the moon falling to the earth but i don't know where my brain picked up the idea could be this game could be an old movie who knows, it's a messed up dream tho
For anyone interested in a Hans Zimmer like feel to MMs music, you must hear ROZEN. You will not be disappointed.
Interesting that the origin of the name was Mu-Jura. Japanese has sounds and symbols for Ma(マ), Jo(ジョ),and Ra(ラ), so I’m surprised it wouldn’t just be spelled out that way instead of Mujura (ムジュラ)
This video slaps, great channel
I love you’re edits lmao but great ass video man
Majora's Mask is byfar my favorite Zelda game
Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance= Majora's 5 areas
One of the best games ❤
Im still waiting to see that happy mask salesman he said we will see him again
That passage in the encyclopedia shows how it can't be trusted as a canon source, anyone who's played the game knows that there are two cut scenes that immediately debunks the 'it was a glorified fever dream' theory, Termina absolutely existed long before Skullkid ever became a victim of Majora's Mask!
could you imagine the ocarina of time and majoras mask in an serie , anime or movie serie
Very well made video, absolutely love this game. Doing a photography project sort of inspired by the masks of the game so I wanted to revisit the world through video essays and found this, loved it. Keep up the great work.
I miss the old Nintendo, not afraid to break our heart in order to make us feel, think and reflect....
Piece of art… the game as well as this video
Great video, thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I cried at the end when i beat this game
I'll always love how to this day, RUclipsrs will continue to misunderstand and mischaracterize the story and point of Majoras mask.
That said I suppose calling it depressing isn't the worst offense considering it's themes of panic and how people deal with impending doom as well as mourning.
Tael’s name is pronounced tale. Tattletale. As in telling on someone. Both tatl and Tael flip on the skull kid and tell you how to go against him.
Awesome Video!!! Been anxiously waiting for it since you wrapped up your great Ocarina of Time video!!!
Love Majora’s Mask, one of my favorite games and it’s definitely a real tear jerker
I am glad I am not the only one who thought that Link becomes a super Saiyan when donning the Fierce deity mask.
The unsung hero who became the hero shade
This game was just amazing!
