Dawn, being a diabetic, I just breathed a sigh of relief as you described how we have to be aware of our blood sugar constantly. Thank you for acknowledging that. It's so true. We try to not let it be a heavy weight, so having less stressors in our home (life) is necessary for a better quality of life. Just like the caregivers out there too. Minimalism helps everyone.
    Keep preaching it, Honey!!!
    You're making a difference ❤

Your idea of seeing all our belongings as inventory is brilliant and causes that "a-ha" moment for anyone struggling with trying to keep a home clean, organized and functional and stressed out chronically because of it, which is probably most people at some point. We all got stuck keeping things that we "might use" and potentially useful and that we like but without thinking about what actually fit reasonably and what we actually use, and that we do not actually have to keep all the extra items-and we SHOULD NOT keep them! I am very grateful to you for this concept!

“Inventory” is the concept that has helped me the most too!! THANK YOU! And the freedom gained from the perspective that I’m NOT just a lazy slob of a bad mom, I’m just trying to manage too much. That’s a motivating realization. It even helps me with calendaring! Thank you, Dawn 😄

My small child getting type 1 doesn’t help me increase anything cognitively because of the amount of mental energy it needs, but it was a huge factor in becoming minimal so I could focus on the diabetes and being ready for an emergency. I can totally relate, I've been diabetic for 40 years this year since I was a child and as you know but others don't/can't realise the 24/7 365 nature of living with this condition as well as dealing with life and all that entails can be debilitatingly (not sure that's a word 🤔) exhausting abd simplifying the things you can really does help 🙂

Thank you for using the diabetes analogy. This video touched my heart this afternoon. One year ago today my youngest of three entered the children's ER in a life threatening situation at the age of fourteen months old. He was diagnosed with type one diabetes and our lives changed forever. The mental load is almost indescribable. Reducing inventory has always helped me, and for the past year, it has literally saved me. Your videos have lifted me up in ways you can't imagine. My house is so beautiful now, and although it is definitely messy and busy and needs maintenance and decor, I can maintain it. Even when my still-breastfeeding highly food allergic type one toddler needs immediate and constant attention. Or my neuroatypical oldest. Or my middle precious girl. My house and possessions are easy to maintain. Your calling to lift others up is extraordinary. Thank you for everything.

I just listened to your podcast yesterday, headed into my special needs son’s room and decluttered two-thirds of his toys. His room is always a disaster, and so I simplified his toys to the ones that I actually see him playing with often. His room feels a lot better now.
I had to get honest about which toys were just sentimental, and which ones weren’t realistic for his developmental level. So it was harder than it seemed like it should be.

Love, love, love this concept of inventory along with stage of life. When i was raising my family of seven children, my stage of life was not so much inventory of toys, but of food. I raised and canned a 2-acre garden, butchered all the meat, milked cows, and raised 100 chicken to sell eggs for spending money. My children never went hungry, but often their toys and clothing were lacking. I would be given hand-me-downs that I would remake into clothing that would work for them. I kept my home relatively clean, but food was my biggest priority and "inventory". I only bought salt and canning lids. I say this for prospective.
Seasons change. Now I am the retired Grandma working on my "Swedish Death Cleaning." Getting rid of the "skapp" 🇸🇪 or 'stuff" 🇺🇲 that I have accumulated in 70 years, is my priority. I am greatful to manage less and less almost daily. My life has been simplified, and I love having a clean home with only my most beloved items around me. Watching you describe the inventory of a drawer, or container, it is so much easier to understand. Not having to decide what to wear because of simplifying is absolugtely a God-señd. Thank you for your bright, cheerful way of articulating the concepts behind minimalism. And I appreciate the genuine care you give to all of your viewers. You truely want what is best for them. Agape ❤

My house just seems messy again and I realize it's time to do a declutter session. My kids have grown a lot since my initial huge purge and without me noticing, we have different things cluttering up our space than before lol. It happens and I think especially when we do get extra busy. This video was timely and as usual you have a way of making me feel ok about letting go of things, which I greatly appreciate. My husband comes from a long line of "tidy hoarders" and he is never on board with getting rid of stuff, BUT I can at least control myself and my kids' inventory. All his mess can stay in his shop 😂. Have a blessed week and thank you! Just watching your video inspired me to go round two on a big declutter. Thanks!

Yes!! I tell others about inventory now too! Life changing for me.
I’m the daughter of a severe hoarder so clutter has always been the enemy, but I never really knew what was and what wasn’t an appropriate amount of stuff to own as an adult. And this thought took up space in my brain everyday in the same way clutter took space in my home. When you taught us about “inventory” suddenly, I thought differently. Inventory not only made decluttering and tidying easier, but it stopped me wondering and trying to figure out what was the right amount of belongings. And tbh the brain space is what I’m most grateful to you for. Thank you! Eternally grateful, Elspeth

I agree completely with your survey and the concept of inventory has made biggest change in my thought process. While watching a video some time back, I heard you refer to your stuff you were decluttering as inventory and I thought on my gosh, inventory, yes! It depersonalizes your stuff so it is easier to part with it, I think. It is no longer “your stuff”, but just inventory. Brilliant. Of all the spins you've put on decluttering I've always thought your verbiage of inventory was your claim to fame. It really changes perspective more than any other trick in my opinion. Now...your fridge and freezer in the video are exactly what I've been working towards. It took years to realize buying new things for my family to try was a waste of money and cluttered up the freezer/fridge so I didn't have room for the items we do eat regularly. I'm gradually purging and being very selective of what gets bought. I think you could do a video again on fridge organization and thoughtful food purchases.

Finally gave up on some craft items that I'll likely never get to. That t-shirt quilt from college shirts, other random things from cool fabric i found, etc. Feels great not to just open up space but also take those items off the to-do list!

This reasoning never even entered my mind. I was starting to worry about medical conditions because my memory is much worse than it used to be. But back then, I didn't have to look after an entire household and my job was much less stressful. I've ditched the job (which comes with its own stress 😅) but once I get settled in I'll definitely look at our inventory. I've been trying to declutter my closet for a while now, but have only managed a few areas due to lack of time

So right you are Dawn; inventory control is a cornerstone of feeling able to care for oneself and one’s home. I have used inventory control as a form of long term Swedish death cleaning to untether myself from the past and greater enjoy daily living.
A very useful post. Thank you for your thoughtful content.

I think my problem with food is that I don’t have a good grasp on what I would need or for how long. I tend to not forget about it. My problem is overly stressing over “making sure” I don’t let anything ruin or go to waste. I think since it’s just me tho, and with not being one who loves cooking, might just be better for me to eat out more than a lot of minimalist prob would. And buy way less groceries. Idk. It’s prob more about my weakness for “mega deals” and my fantasy Betty Crocker self. 😅😅
I pondered why for me eating out, it’s so easy for me to choose food while eating at home it’s a huge struggle. I think for me it’s mostly Bcuz food smell is a huge trigger for me (activating my hunger more) and when you go sit down at a restaurant, they’ve already narrowed down the choices for you and bring you the “printout.” Lol. So all you do is read it while you get to already smell the food cooking. Lol. You don’t need much brain power for that and it saves my mind stress. As a single person tho, I don’t think at least take home take out would cost much more than cooking and eating at home. Also the concept of outsourcing. The things that I don’t have a lot of bandwidth for and how much is my time worth with me prepping and cooking and cleaning it all up etc. It might be worth $20 here and $20 there since at the grocery it’s gonna be $50 here and $50 there anyways. And then it only serves to further chain me to things I don’t enjoy doing…constantly. So ha ha. I’m gonna “meal plan” with a twist (dining out or take out will be a pre arranged line item lol) and see how that goes. And it’s not just the work itself really. It’s the constant difficulty deciding what to eat at home. Well at least until I can find a better way that doesn’t wear my brain out all the time.

I love this video and you Dawn❤️ I do find I am stressed and more anxious when there is clutter. I have done a lot of decluttering since finding your channel. I am currently decluttering my recipe book cabinet. I put it off, because I love recipe books and cooking. I have more to go on that. Because I have decluttered and simplified so many other areas I have the bandwidth to do this. I thank you so much Dawn for all of your help❤️

I don’t collect recipe books, but I recently sorted through my recipe book, my loose recipes, my mom’s recipes, and the recipes and books belonging to my grandma and great aunts. I got everything whittled down to my recipe book (with some of their recipes added), which I created new dividers and tabs for, and just a couple of sentimental cookbooks.

This is so true- I have several very serious illness that are life threatening. I take upwards of 15 medicines each morning and just a few shy of that at night. My oldest son died last April unexpectedly he and I had a very close relationship and to say its been hard is all I can really say. After his death my husband and I had to make all kinds of changes to life insurance ,retirement and several other things. It was about this time that I started looking at minimalism. Something that I had never really heard of in the past. I have never been a hoarder, but simply like alot of different things, At one time I had been thru the collecting of tea sets, then tea cups, then anything miniature , then baskets, not to mention all the sports things my son's got from all their sporting days. well you get the picture. I also loved diy projects, craft projects and so on and on. I have been deciding what crafts I have time foor and which ones I don't have time for. I have given my youngest son and his wife alot of his pictures, and a few pieces of old school work, or cards he created for me, school and sports stuff as well. My husband and I have put pots and pans and some dishes in a time will tell bin. I did a massive closet overhaul . I am on a day to day mission of looking at pieces and making decisions to keep or donate. My whole wardrobe has changed from a working outside the home, to a not working outside the home, to a moving to a tourist town at the beach in the beautiful Gulf Coast of Alabama. Thanks Dawn for helping me through the months following my son's death. And working towards a new me who is learning to take back my house and really think of life in different seasons. What might work in one season, won't work in another season.

My goal for Thursday was to sort through my shoes and reduce the number I have using your rules such as do they "really fit"? When was the last time I wore them? Do they make me smile? I struggled a bit with but they are so cute! Realized that if cute doesn't fit, I'm not going to wear them. I filled a box with around 15 pair of shoes many that I simply avoided wearing because I really wasn't comfortable in them. I cannot explain why I kept them so long! So nice to have them gone! Thank you so much for sharing what you've learned with all of us!

Dawn I want to thank you so much for your videos. I have only been watching for a week and already got rid of 8 bin bags, 4 big bags of paper and 1 1/2 bags of clothes (more to come). I have mental health issues and my house being cluttered has appeared to affect my cognitive load and definitely my memory so here's hoping that getting rid of all this STUFF is going to help. By doing this little bit of decluttering so far, I have found I feel much better and have found I want to get up and clear even more clutter when last week (before finding your videos) I just felt like I couldn't find the motivation to do anything at all and felt I had an elephant sitting on me when I needed the get up to do just a drink. Thank goodness I found your videos, you are amazing 😍 x
