Food, Logistics and Hiker Support for the Grampians Peaks Trail

- This is a brief video on logistics, hiker support and food I packed for the Grampians Peaks Trail which I hiked back in September 2022.
If you’re looking to book this hike with Parks Victoria, prior to booking the camp sites I’d strongly suggest checking the following first -
That you can get to Halls Gap prior to hike commencement date.
Check accommodation availability within Halls Gap
Check hiker support availability (if you choose to employ the services of one)
Travelling from the Gold Coast I found it a mission getting to Halls Gap.
Being a regional town, transport is limited regarding Bus and Train services to and from Melbourne City.
I had to get a flight into Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine)
Shuttle bus into the city (Spencer Street Station)
V-Line train out to Ararat
Bus to Stawell
Taxi to Halls Gap
Accommodation - Halls Gap is a popular town with many people visiting over weekends, school holidays and long weekends; therefore it's important to make sure accommodation is available as there will be at least one night there on arrival, another on day 4 of the hike when you make your way into Halls Gap Before taking off again on day 5 and another night at the end of the hike when arriving back from Dunkeld.
Hiker Support - we employed the services of Grampians Peaks Walking Co for lifts to the Northern Trail Head and pick up from Dunkeld back to Halls Gap on day 13.
We also employed their services for food drops - one at Halls Gap and another on day 9 at Jimmy Creek Road.
We met the staff a day prior to our hike so we could fill the food containers.
Food drops are containers which we filled with food prepacked and any other items including gas canister. Part of their service is taking out any rubbish you have, just place it in the tub and when collected they will dispose of the rubbish.
Halls Gap - there are several good cafés and restaurants as well as Grocery Store/general store in case you need any extra food along the way.
There is a hiking supplies shop there as well, Absolute Outdoors, which is very well stocked with all types of hiking equipment.
We also pre ordered gas canisters to collect there prior to our hike as you are unable to carry them on the airplane.

Hi Joe, how did you store your foos bag at night? Did you see any mice or rats?
Hi Carole, I always had my food bag right next to me at night and made sure everything was sealed within. Food scraps were kept in a seperate resealable freezer bag in the front pocket of my backpack. Thankfully I didn’t see any rats or possums at night near the tent or in the communal shelters.
