@@bronwenhabberley5985 Yeah having watched all of the 80s GNs here on youtube (something to fill an evening in lockdown), I do feel for Greasepaint. Clearly, one of the greatest Aintree horses never to win it. Another would be Suny Bay in the 90s...

Some real old favourites on show here. What a wonderful National horse Corbiere was, 3rd here and again in 1985 having won in 1983.....Wonderful memories...:-)

MEECHIO I was 9 when he won, and I picked him😁😁. I was already a big Grand National fan, Corbiere made me a fanatic. To this day, his win makes me tear up, and I love watching all these replays.

Jenny Pitman was one hell of a trainer. Her record in the big races is superb. In 1991, when Garrison Savannah came so close to completing the Gold Cup and Grand National double, she reckoned her son Mark needed one more week to recover from the car accident he sustained, he just was not quite fit enough. She ran a very tight yard and her horses were always beautifully turned out. Her biggest tragedy was losing Smith's Band in the 1997 Monday National. He would not have beaten Lord Gyllene but had been jumping so well he would have finished. His terrible fall at the 20th showed he died in the air and collapsed dead on the ground. She was distraught as it was he pictured with her at the stables in lockdown the day before.

The courage of these horses and riders boggle my mind. Glad to see that there are no comments from the animal rights crowd. Although it is heartbreaking when a horse gets hurt or killed it is something that comes with testing the limits of courage and endurance. My heart is more broken for animals that have been dragged into idiotic human wars. Cavalry horses, bunker dogs etc.

I bet the winner that day the first of only three occasions when I have done so! Back in the day when the National really was the National and not the watered down version we now have.

With 141 horses entered (a record at the time and surpassed only once since I think) and 79 horses left in at the 5-day decs this is arguably one of the best national fields assembled. So many at their prime even given the easing of the fences and more lenient weighting since. 23 finishers is still a record reflected the tough but fair fences. Good to see the post race welfare has improved and was long overdue.

  • @quae5tor

Corbiere was absolutely flying at the finish, he must've made up nearly 100 yards on the leaders from the 3rd last fence.

This was the year of the gradual change to the fences, fences from Valentines to the 12th were noticeable softer and I think that everyone who was in the know knew that as well. Please note Burnt Oak ploughing through the 12th and the condition of those fences as the horses arrive on the second circuit. With also the drying ground there was a record amount of finishes which I believe will never be broken due to now less runners.

Very true mate we have searched enough for any and BBC told me not a chance of gaining any footage that they do have of a particular race as nobody can view it without permission. Permission means you need a shit load of company paperwork costing thousands.

RIP Earthstopper, ran his heart out to finish 5th. He looked a contender until he tired with about 6 furlongs to go. With some decent training could have been a real contender in 85. Great quality race. Greasepaint, Hello Dandy and Corbiere again in the top 4. A lot of very good horses in this one.
