Cre8Audio West Pest- a sound demo (no talking, but plenty of captions)

  • A little slow out of the blocks, but I’ve only had this thing 24hrs, and there may be those for whom a run-through of all the oscillator functions is useful.
The fx chain- the Pest’s output is run into the Make Noise Echophon in both wet and dry modes, from there to a lightly-modulated low pass filter (MI Ripples), followed by a bit of reverb from Qu-Bit’s Aurora in FDN mode. As the Pest only has sustain and release knobs, the gate (from Pam’s) is passed through a Doepfer ADSR to take the ‘c’ of the click out of the attack stage. The sequence is a fortuitous grab from the Marbles clone, but the Pest has a very capable arpeggiator/sequencer of its own, and if I can get to grips with that it will appear in an imminent video.
Like and subscribe, good people, spread the word and don’t take any wooden money. My eye op is tomorrow (as I write), so it will be interesting to see if modular synthesis actually needs two eyes…
    Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the wonderful demo. I’ve got a West Pest for a couple weeks now and it seems to prefer to take it to the max in my hands. Now I’ve seen this video I’ll try to keep it on a leash next time and keep it more mellow, because this sounded great.
    Great synth with many faces.

Thank you for your kind words! Yes, it can be a bit of a monster, but if you feed it a pleasant sequence it will behave. Funnily enough, I rewatched this video myself just yesterday for the first time since I posted it- glad it’s still useful!

It’s nice to be early enough with the new gear to make a demo worthwhile!

It’s very fine Dave, and you won’t find another additive synth at this price point… Thanks for watching!

Damn it all wal I was thinking of one of these myself. They sound great. Haven’t done much with the dx yet other than program bell sounds. It’s easy to make great bell sounds. I had a great pluck sound but accidently over wrote the thing.

It’s a good job I demo’d it for you then, eh?
Seriously, I had had my eyes on a Buchla VCO, but it was only £40 less than this, so I though what the hell… Having trouble getting clock out of this to sync with the modular, so I can’t instigate a sequence in this then accompany it with a beat (I think). Excellent piece of kit though…

@@walrtbstudios5430 I saw something that could sort your sync problem recently, but I cant remember where or what it was. Try doing a RUclips search.

Wal, look at Buchla, it’s tough when your primary instruments are east, but it’s a whole different sound, that plays well in both schools.

...Thanks Wal....another interesting sound....can't read the print but I am guessing the lower knobs are for programming the initial sound?....

Not so NYB- the three knobs immediately below the Dynamics Controller three are LFO (rate), Glide and Volume. The sound is determined by the waveform, and how much you fold it.
Thanks for watching! Btw, I still wish I’d used a lower register, but I’m not taking this down now!

I can't decide between a Mavis, East Beast or West Pest, but lack of a wave folder may rule out the East Beast. Thanks for this interesting demo and good luck with the op.

I asked myself whether I wanted yet another subtractive synth or my first piece of additive gear. Phrased like that the question only had one answer, for me at least…
Glad you liked the demo. The op went well, and as soon as I can see half-decently I’ll demo the sequencer, which is a lot of fun!

    Nice introducing!
Astunning what a tiny box is able to spit out
Hope everything went well with your eyes not to say "one day, there will be eight-armed triclopes taking over the world guiding us into synthetic armageddon" ...just joking,
health comes first. All the best, bless you, Wal!

Thanks Nils! Sequencer demo to follow- unfortunately the repaired eye’s useful range starts about 40cm outside the bad eye’s range- and that 40cm is just where you’d put a synth!

Good luck with the eye surgery. You don't need two eyes to synth - but verbal tutorials and text-based user manuals do help. I've got a West Pest. The sequencer/arpeggiator and key transposer are a lot of fun. I feel the "semi modular" branding of the West Pest is a bit misleading. Unlike, say, a 0-coast or the Behringer Crave, there doesn't appear to be much by way of stand alone sound design or patching. I'm guessing the "semi modular" is because they want you to put this in a modular rack and fall down a very deep money pit. On that score, any recommendations for 2-3 modules to complement the WP would be gratefully received.I'm guessing a functions module and then what?

Ooh. Really good question. As I mention elsewhere below the line I’m having trouble syncing the Pest in sequencer mode to the modular (sync, clock in, clock out- none of them connect with my master clock), so if that is truly the case the Pest itself would be your master clock. I’d recommend a filter- variable state or just low pass- a multi-fx module (sadly these do not come cheap) and a function generator. Putting names to those- Mutable Instruments Ripples (or a clone thereof), Happy Nerding FX Aid, Make Noise Maths. Insofar as fx are concerned though- if you’re really keen on (say) just a delay or a reverb those can be had for under £100 if you’re careful/ lucky. But don’t take my word for it. Watch A LOT of videos. Ask around. Got friends with electronic gear? Pool stuff. Oh, and thanks for the kind words re the surgery! And for watching obvs…
