While I didn't have anything "blatantly retarded", I did have a boatload of money into my kit. It was excellent kit. Surefire/Noveske/Trijicon/etc. It was very good on the square range by myself, or hunting, or whatever, and I liked it a fair bit. I then attended my first class in 2010 with this kit, and it was pretty horrible. I actually wished I had bought nothing, attended the class, paid to rent some kit, and then bought things based off of mine and other's experiences during the class. I would have saved money, skipped the painful (Yes literally, I had a single-point sling) aspect of learning, and been far better off. My problem was that I had a bunch of cool kit, and wanted to learn how to USE it. That's backwards. Learn to use it, and then buy the "cool" kit that fits your use case well. The only thing worse is buying a bunch of cool kit and pretending that you don't need to learn more and NOT attending a class.
*My attendance was at a course other than TNVC/NF, but the advice applies.
