For example - buying Z4 for 16K might be good, but at 31k? maybe something better at that price... you get it

I am a big Miata fan. Mine was the most reliable car I've ever owned. My latest purchase was its Italian cousin the Fiat 124 Spider Lusso model in red with tan leather and a six speed manual. I live in the NY finger lakes area near Watkins glen. Back roads galore here through through vinyards, farmland, forest, hills and valleys all that give way to a gorgeous view of one of our lakes. Long live the roadster.
So glad Kennan finally got to enjoy a tidy NA MX-5/Miata. I’ve had one for half my life now, it was my second ever car, and I’m still not bored of the level of fun it delivers *despite* a 0-60 time of ‘eventually’. I have to break every conceivable motoring law to have the same fun in my daily driver (FL5 Type R).
I love the miata too but decided to but the Honda s2000 instead about 5 years ago. Very analogue , extremely reliable, the 6 speed is among the best, not the fastest but so much fun to drive!!! If anybody is looking for a fun and reliable 2 seats cabriolet, the s200 is the one!

If I lived in the US I'd do everything in my power to win it in auction. You never see NAs for sale in half as good of a condition and the number of miles is unheard of

@@jacobladd5245the S2K is my favorite car I’ve ever owned and driven. I’m 6’1” so I also don’t feel that i fit in a Miata. The S2K was totally manageable for someone my size. I recently put in a lowered seat bracket that lowered the seat bottom 20mm and it made the position perfect. I’m now comfortable and have plenty of room and my head doesn’t stick out the top. I would highly recommend an S2K. The C5 was a blast but the S2K in my opinion is leagues more fun to drive, on public roads at least.
C5 was always my favorite. Bought a new manual Challenger instead, mostly for the comfort, but C5 is still a race car IMO. (Also had an NB manual with Nardo wheel. Most fun in a car. )
I like when Kennan talks about specific technical pros of vehicles (BMW Z4 ITBs and stiffness) and their common reliability issues. These can be hard bits of info to dig out from enthusiast forums, especially without bias.
Kennan you nailed the difference between the Z4M and the 987.1. I have owned both and honestly can’t decide between the two. 987 is technically the better car but the Z4M had tremendous charm and a better engine. And thanks for the shirt and mug. Hope to see you next year at MCW!
Personally I liked the Saturn Sky styling better (at least the front fascia), but both were quite good for what they were. Definitely had a cheaper feel, steering wasn't as engaging, and had weird power bands. But if you just wanted to get out for a leisurely drive, solid choices.
The Pontiac Solstice and the Saturn variant were way too heavy with poor steering feel to be considered sports cars. They were basically highway cruisers
Great variation Kennan. Few years back I picked an AW11 MR2 T-Top, but also test drove an NA and NB Miata right before. They're all great cars - lightweight, high-revving, open roof, super tossable. Shout out to the S2000 as well, along with the Z4 that you mentioned. My friend's dad bought a 2004 red Z4 convertible brand new back then, its styling has held up pretty well over the years in my opinion 🙂
I love S2k's but the price is simply too much for the stock performance. If everything else was the same and they had an aluminum unibody they would be worth every penny and more. Honda needs to bring exactly that to the market and they will sell out at 65-80k

I had a 92 NA Miata with a supercharger and just switched over to a 07 S2000, I definitely miss the Miata but the S2000 is a much better car in my opinion
If you haven’t driven the Z4 M (Roadster or Coupe), they truly are criminally underrated. Small, light, short gears, screaming s54 engine, manual and RWD only … it’s the perfect sports car. Best BMW ever and one of the best sports cars ever.
Lol I'm 27 and have been fortunate enough to own (finance) many cars since I was 18. I have a Fiesta ST I bought for just under 10k before 2020. Best car I've ever owned. Reliable, cheap, 45+ mpg on the highway, 6 speed, VERY light weight. More fun than the BMW 135i N54, 370z, 350z, Volvo S60 R m66, etc that I've owned and driven extensively. For probably 8-15k you can get a Fiesta ST and thats MUCH cheaper than most of these cars and offers a LOT, especially for younger drivers. It isn't all about power folks! My 500hp 135i was very fun, but driving a street legal go-kart (Fiesta ST) is way more fun.
Bought a 450whp hci C5Z for under $18k a couple years ago. It's an incredible usable and shockingly comfortable sports car. Great on track and mountain roads too.
I've owned three NA Miatas and I miss them all. I've had way more fun on the streets in a Miata than my current sports car S2000. Up next is a 978 Cayman S.
Glad to see the Cayman om the list, had a 2023 911(992) GTS last year and it was a bit too heavy and not the kind of Sunday cruiser I wanted when going to the same Welsh countryside and enjoying the fabulous driving roads there. So I did part exchange it for a Cayman GT and I don't regret anything. Will keep that which is fully loaded to the day l can't drive anymore. But it's not apt for or as daily in the UK, so have an 2024 RS6 as a smloker and its fast, very well designed, comfortable it has almost everything you can want from a scar, but not then X factor and driving balance as the GT4 has in spades. I honestly prefer the mach-1 to the gt350. Unpopular opinion but the gen3 coyote is just better to own than the voodoo. Just way more usable. Easier to maintain. Parts are plenty and easy to find. Easier to work on at home.

For anyone looking at a 987.1, they are cheaper than the 987.2 for a reason. If driving around town and spirited backroads are your thing, they are great. But be careful and expect to replace the engine if you're tracking them, especially the S. The 9A1 introduced in 2009 is not immune but doesn't have nearly the same failure rate as the 987.1 engines. The PDK may be rare for the 987.2s but Porsche alleges that they sold 90% PDKs and 10% manuals in the 987.2 generation, so the manuals are even harder to find. The PDKs were brand new for 2009 going forward and people wanted them because they were so much better than the outgoing automatic transmissions.
I think you are greatly exaggerating the issues with the engines. First off, these cars don’t have the IMS bearing issues that Kennan mentioned, so Kennan should not spread that mis-information. The engines from late 99 to late 05 in 911s and Boxsters that have the IMS issue affect around 9-10% of engines. Any engine with a fair amount of miles (over 100k) on it is fine, and a fix for the IMS is well documented. The later engines from 06-09 have IMS bearings that have a less than 1% failure rate according to the company that created the IMS solution. What those engines actually suffer from is bore scoring, but a simple check of the piston walls during a PPI will show you the state of this issue. Research has shown that cold weather use and poor oil management are the biggest culprits to bore scoring, as is track use where sustained high-G turns can keep oil from where it needs to be. But again…hardly a “you are going to replace your engine” scenario as not all Porsche Cayman’s fall into “stored outside in winter snow” or “flogged on a race track.” Let’s face it, most Caymans are stored in garages and used for nice weekend drives. The dot2 cars don’t have the bore coating that causes the bore scoring issues so pervasively, and this issue is basically non-existent on non-S cars.
I spent about $10,000 at the beginning of last summer on a 94 manual corvette with only 42,000 miles. Yeah, the interior is cheap and crappy, but I really can’t think of anything else I don’t love about it. It looks great, it’s a blast to drive, it’s comfortable, and it’s been dead reliable.
Glad to see the BMW Z made it to the list! I bought a 1997 Z3 a couple years ago and it’s such a fantastic sports car! Picked it up with 80k miles for $5k and it’s been very reliable for me believe it or not!

I drive 2.0L mx-5 nd with the soft top. At 24 it’s all I can ask for in a car. So much fun and amazing handling through the twisty Dutch roads nearby.

I spent about $10,000 at the beginning of last summer on a 94 manual corvette with only 42,000 miles. Yeah, the interior is cheap and crappy, but I really can’t think of anything else I don’t love about it. It looks great, it’s a blast to drive, it’s comfortable, and it’s been dead reliable.

Glad to see the BMW Z made it to the list! I bought a 1997 Z3 a couple years ago and it’s such a fantastic sports car! Picked it up with 80k miles for $5k and it’s been very reliable for me believe it or not!
