Jake all your tuts are great, training new juniors and was literally about to make a video covering exactly this and now I can just link to you're channel instead. Thanks so much man!
"Copy with Property Links" this is really helpful. Was wondering there would be a way to do this and now I got it. This is why I watch your videos even though I know the concept very well (Null Object in this context)! You are insane, Jake. Keep helping us!!
this is great thanks but just still curious -- couldnt we do the same animation with just the redbox layer? instead of null? or will there be a slight difference?
Mannnn. I have got in the habit of watching your videos even if I think I know something about the subject. Global controls on a null! I was using solids, this changes everything. Thanks Jake!
Jake, I find the tool "Link Focus Distance To Layer" useful, but it's only available for two-node cameras. Since I'd like to stick with one-node cameras, is there a workaround to achieve this basically auto-fous tool? Thanks.
Thanks! Nice and clear tutorial! And I have a question, how could you add the Noise HLS around the box? When I added the noise HLS effect, the noises are everywhere inside the box and ground. Thanks a lot!
Hello everybody, I have question about null object. I need to move different layers in my composition. But some layers are previously connected with a null objet. When i create a new null object for the same layers, the old link is break. Question : Can I use two nulls for on layers. Of cours if it's not possible, how can i get around the problem ? Thanks
Great tutorial. Just heard about the multiple null tricks (I've been using one null and doing it all manually). Thankfully you've made an amazing tutorial. Ps. I love your skillshare classes too
He's a tulip, he talks about null objects and explains why its easier to work in null object, but then on 3:03 he starts using the box image to do the graph edit notice the null object was removed by cut off the video and he continued, null no longer visible, tulip 100%
Please can you do video about a rectangle move in a arc there is a video about 12 principles and one of that is arc ... so can you demonstrate how can you make a rectangle move as arc way ?? Thank you
Nice share, thanks! First time opening AE and I just wanted to bring one video/object in to scene with the motion of a different video layer and I stumbled on some skater dudes video with literally millions of subs. This guy taught less in 24 minutes than you accomplished clearly and concisely in the first 2 minutes. Thanks again, I will sub and check out your other content and videos.
Thanks for this tutorial Please am very new in graphics generally please i need some to tutor me all through graphics journey please i need more of you sir thanks.
hey Jake!! this was amazing helpful tutorial. Can you also do a tutorial of shape morphing? Like a cartoon game console changes, transforms to a rocket sort of?
Thanks for this-sheesh-I thought the basic mechanics of the rolling/bouncing box, as you show here, would be the simplest built-in thing in AE. It ain't-but at least I can do it now. Cheers!
Awesome! Does anyone know if there is some keyboard shortcut or some way to temporarily move a null object without moving everything that is pick whipped to it? When I google this I get nothing but intro courses on using null objects, but I just want to know this one thing. I've been working on an animation and want to reposition a null before continuing my work. There are tons of layers pick whipped to it, but not all. So instead of going through and selecting individual layers, un-parenting, moving the null, re-selecting individual layers and re-parenting, I just want to +BOOP+ move the null and that's it. Thanks in advance!
Great video! The term "null object" bothers me, though. It's not really an object; it's a tool that covertly connects and controls things. I'd rather it was called something else, like a fob, or a compound, or a ziptie, or (my fave) a carabiner.
Okay but I can’t curve my graph line?? When I try to click & drag, it removes that keyframe..?? It’s a great video but for little things like that, can you briefly explain what you click so we can actually follow you instead of pausing to see if you explained it or not? Not a hate comment at all! Just something that would be helpful for the future
That's a great question! I've actually created a tutorial on how to make an advanced squash and stretch rig over at School of Motion: ruclips.net/video/aSaN4yEbp7I/видео.html
Here is a Badge called "Respect" from me. :D I thought I knew how to use null objects until I saw this video. I watched it at 1.25 Speed because I'm not an absolute beginner. So, Thank you. I subbed you.
Great krate-throwing ;-) Is there a tutorial about using null-objects to create a simple arm rig? I have 3 layers (upper arm + forearm + hand) and would like to make sort of an ik-rig without duik bassel or rubberhose. Just like a jumping jack?
Help so when I try to do a zoom transition I press s on my Mac for scale and when I do it just says "scale” and it doesn’t show the numbers so basically I can’t zoom in
Well done. Do you know why nulls look different between creating a new null vs. dragging a previously created null from the project panel in to a comp? I realize creating new nulls is very little overhead, but I like to reuse things when I can - and dragging a null from the project panel shows solid, set opacity to 0 to match a created null but the box doesn't show?
I can't believe I didn't know "copy with property links" until now. I've been linking properties one by one. Ugh. Tutorial request: How to make 3 different texture styles using effects.
In the same way. You can just use each null to squash and stretch from those points, or add more nulls wherever you need the squash and stretch to happen.
I can't believe I didn't know about copy property links. actually I totally believe that, I learn something new about After Effects everyday. Still, this tutorial is invaluable and you are great.
Thanks for the Tutorial, I have a question I saw a artwork But i didnt understand how they did test. End Of the artwork the shape goes left and slowly be imvisible, it was similar to 3d. Can I send the artwork to you ? You can look and say to me.
How did you get the grain to go along the edge of the square so well? I tried adding a radial gradient fill, but it is still circular and doesn't exactly match the edge as well as yours. These are great tutorials btw!
THANK YOU SO MUCH BRO! I had some doubts about null objects, but you cleared them up... you're the man. Keep the good content. Subscribed! :D Greetings from Mexico ;)
Thanks, Jake! You are always super thorough and easy to understand. I am trying to do this same sort of animation with a pill-shaped object. Would you use null objects the same way for it to roll on the pill edge or is there a different technique?
Hey Jake, just subscribed. Do you think you could make a future tutorial on Track Mattes. I got the basic understanding of what they are but I still find them a bit confusing and not knowing when/ how to properly use them. Thanks.
Halloo! Urgent questionnnnn, can i use the null objects to place an effect like wiggle in many layers to make them move as one? i've been trying to do it but i can't and haven't seen a video where someone does it.
If you want all the layers to move as if they were one, yes. Just parent all of the layers to the null object and put your wiggle expression on the null's position property.
Please do more tutorials on After effect. I have already watched your courses on Skillshare. You are great.
Your tuts are articulate, concise, and engaging. Well done Jake, you get my subscription!

Ur style of teaching are so good, you take things from mere basics to advance in no time.
this is great thanks but just still curious -- couldnt we do the same animation with just the redbox layer? instead of null? or will there be a slight difference?

Same I can't see it I'm not sure why?
Mannnn. I have got in the habit of watching your videos even if I think I know something about the subject. Global controls on a null! I was using solids, this changes everything. Thanks Jake!
wow, btw dude where are you? , its been a year , you didn't upload any videos :(
Jack your teaching strategy just mind bowing.
You are the best out there! Keep them coming!
How do we know which null to parent with which? I'm asking about the parenting direction.

Nice rolling box Jake!
Can you roll an egg though??!?!?!
Jake can you DEMYSTIFY animation curves in AE (DEEP DIVE) video
I'm so curious about it
I actually have a Skillshare class on that topic exactly: skl.sh/2EMugXE

skillshare and youtube channel awesome
best tutorial ever at 0:33 seconds of the video find the answer!!! where are the null object? thank you
Really Really Great for Sharing Thanks sir!
you got me a bit confused there when you deleted the first null object, I didn't notice until you added the second one but overall thanks
Excellent I love the way you explain things, keep going !
hey Jake!! this was amazing helpful tutorial. Can you also do a tutorial of shape morphing? Like a cartoon game console changes, transforms to a rocket sort of?
My box won't show up when I make a null object.
the best teacher on youtube
This video is change my editing in ae 💖💖💖💖🔥🔥
for a second i was only listening and tought that your voice tone sounds very similar to Andrew Kramer from VideoCopilot. Great tut BTW.
Thanks for this-sheesh-I thought the basic mechanics of the rolling/bouncing box, as you show here, would be the simplest built-in thing in AE. It ain't-but at least I can do it now. Cheers!

Not that I know of, but it would probably be quicker to just make a new null in the new position and then parent the original null to it.
Man if you make video about expression that would be lot's helpful for us , specially for me!🧡❤😀

Hi there, you need to press Alt/Option before dragging
Our wonderful friends the nulls. :)
I love this one ! I have a question how to create squash and strech with expressions ?
That's a great question! I've actually created a tutorial on how to make an advanced squash and stretch rig over at School of Motion: ruclips.net/video/aSaN4yEbp7I/видео.html
Why dosent the square don’t show up?
This Video Is the most perfect one about understanding Null Objects
Here is a Badge called "Respect" from me. :D I thought I knew how to use null objects until I saw this video. I watched it at 1.25 Speed because I'm not an absolute beginner. So, Thank you. I subbed you.

Thank you! Now I understand after many videos of explanations, time and patience of understanding null effects. :))
Hey Jake. Forgive the dumb question, but how did you achieve the ground effect?
why my null object efect my color of my text and why i can't pug glow on the text after it is on the null
Well done. Do you know why nulls look different between creating a new null vs. dragging a previously created null from the project panel in to a comp? Subscribed! Well done - that was great and I learned quite a deal. Keep it up Jake
Amazing explanation about null objects...
When you say "null objects don't render" you mean that... The exportation will be faster?
No, I mean they literally will not show up when you go to export a comp.
@@JakeInMotion ahhh :'v
I get it now, thank you
Can you suggest me about installing element on after effects cc 2015. I tried but failed. Getting error messages.
I can't believe I didn't know "copy with property links" until now. I've been linking properties one by one. Ugh. Tutorial request: How to make 3 different texture styles using effects.
What if you wanted to add squash and stretch as the box hits either side? How would you approach that?
In the same way. You can just use each null to squash and stretch from those points, or add more nulls wherever you need the squash and stretch to happen.
I can't believe I didn't know about copy property links. actually I totally believe that, I learn something new about After Effects everyday. Still, this tutorial is invaluable and you are great.
hi the null object outline isn't there? the outline isn't showing up and idk what to do.
You might have your layer guides disabled. Try pressing CMD+shift+H.
Jake In Motion thank you!
REally Great.Thank alot
Can you do that in premiere
A few years ago this video helped me SOO much! I just watched it again. Very helpful!
superb. Thanks for explaining it!
Thanks
It was awesome. Thank u
I have a question whenever I try to do my null object I cant find the red box in the middle it disappeared mind telling me how to fix that?
What do you mean by the red box? The null object outline?
Such useful and important things to know. Thank you!
very beautiful tutorial and information. thanks alot
Thanks so much. I really enjoy your (skillshare and youtube) classes.
What tha f...k?!!!! Never thought of using nulls like that
Thanks for the Tutorial, I have a question I saw a artwork But i didnt understand how they did test. End Of the artwork the shape goes left and slowly be imvisible, it was similar to 3d. Can I send the artwork to you ? You can look and say to me.
Why didn't I think about using Null objects to control effects on mutliple layers before!!!
So useful thank you.
Thank u! I love your tutorials, u explain the principals of each after effects buttons)!
"It's good!" :) Priceless tutorial, thank you so much, Jake!
Amazing tutorial!! Thanks
Very good one. Made 15 minutes look like 5! What would happen if I haven´t separated dimensions whilst animating?
How can I make the "BOX" precomp size as exact the BOX size?
My BOXprecomp is taking whole size of the compositions. Please help !!!!
Go into the precomp and change the composition dimensions in the composition settings menu.
@@JakeInMotion Can I crop the layer using " region of interest "
Yes!
How did you get the grain to go along the edge of the square so well? I tried adding a radial gradient fill, but it is still circular and doesn't exactly match the edge as well as yours. These are great tutorials btw!
I used an inner shadow layer style. Then I added the noise HLS to add grain, levels to add contrast, and a tint to control the color.
This was fantastic, thanks.
THANK YOU SO MUCH BRO! I had some doubts about null objects, but you cleared them up... you're the man. Keep the good content. Subscribed! :D Greetings from Mexico ;)

1:14 im cc6 its not same how to it in cs6
te amo
really cool, if you hold ctrl while moving the null it snaps to the edges of the cube
ahh, thanks bro
Hey Jake, just subscribed. Do you think you could make a future tutorial on Track Mattes. I got the basic understanding of what they are but I still find them a bit confusing and not knowing when/ how to properly use them. Thanks.

Thanks for explaining! Mystery unmystified

Subbed. Helpful video :) thanks mate
Super helpful
This was so helpful, thanks
Is this now null and Void?
🤌🏻
Your works are really helpful. Keep up with the good work. And thank you very much to share all these useful contents.
thankyou! please do keep sharing such stuffs. thanks
