I always keep a rustler in my collection! I originally started with 2 vintage rustlers, still have them, one has stayed as a rustler, but the other has evolved. Spawning different models. Constant evolution of endless conversions.
The original Rustler is a great, great platform to learn the hobby. Lots of hop up and upgradable parts to learn about and experiment with. Lots of fun. Can’t beat it for a beginner RC
Tried to get to 70+ recently. Got to 74 with this: 1) 76/31 gearing 2) 17mm conversion $40 3) Hoons wheels/tires 4) 3s Traxxas battery Wheelie bar helps, higher C rated battery helps, more weight helps. But these aren’t necessary. I always give a push start, so my rear driveshafts don’t explode! Thanks for the great video Mark!
I bought my first hobby grade RC last September. It was a Rustler XL-5 I was going to keep stock. After putting bearings in it, now it’s pretty much a VX-L... and I’ve added a Stampede 4x4, Slash 4x4 VXL, E-Revo 2.0, X-Maxx and a Hoss to my fleet. It was a very slippery slope from “keeping it stock” to now.
@@verynick Oh yeah! Also another beautifully simple, easy to fix on the fly design, because it's all on top. It's definitely a monster in its own right. It can definitely take a beating. Upgraded A-Arms and hub carriers and its almost indestructible. Very underrated by people for the beast it is. My only complaint would be te stock tires. They just don't do it justice. Same with the Hoss.
What’s ur opinion on the stampede i personality own one it was my first electric RC car and I also have a EREVO and my first ever RC car is a Michael Schumacher F-250 nitro truck it’s 3 speed nitro Idk the actual name of it

Still waiting dude. Please get the rustler sideways. Dont care about top speed or how high it can crash into the ground from. Get it driftin n slidin cheers.
Great video! Once I stepped up to the higher voltage 11.1 volt 3C LiPo batteries this truck became a wheelie monster. At 50 MPH and giving full throttle still yielded a wheelie. It takes a little practice to control the wheelies. If you want to give this beast full throttle using a 3C LiPo forget the stock wheelie bar and go for the longer wheelie bar version. (I would love to see Traxxas come out with a new "short" wheelie bar that can adjust lower to the ground.) Switching to the heavier 9.6 volt NiMh 8C batteries will keep the front wheels on the ground but will yield less speed. For those not looking for the highest speed and a unbelievable responsive truck this is a great option. This truck is amazing with so many speed options and battery combinations! Depending on your servo and the speed you plan on driving the VXL you might want to adjust your multi-function knob on your transmitter all the way clockwise to make the steering a little less sensitive especially for high speed action. The original rear knobby and front ribbed tires that comes with the VXL are way better for off road action and control but if you are looking for speed on asphalt definitely go with the anaconda tires Mark recommended. I tried the anacondas on a golf course and there was no grip on the grass or the sand traps. On turf and off road the original rear knobby/spike tires and ribbed front tires provided the best speed and control for me. Thanks Mark for another great video!
I just got a Rustler VXL 4x4 and I love it! I took it to the dirt track yesterday and it was a blast. I was feathering the throttle most the time. So much power on a 2s.

The original brushed rustler was my first rc car and I beat the heck out of it. 20 something years later i still have it with most of its original parts. I put a leftover xl5 esc and 550 motor in it and my 8 year old nephew is now bashing it. Probably one of the best chassis ever built for just having fun.
The rustler xl5 was my first rc car. Some parts I've upgraded are a 5100kv brushless motor, the Traxxas steel spline constant velocity axles, and the Traxxas wheelie bars. The best upgrades though in my mind are the Hot Racing aluminum transmission case and sealed aluminum differential case. The transmission case alone kept my motor temps way down as I was having troubles with it overheating.
My daughter is 7 and I’m trying to find her an entry level rc. I haven’t been into it in 10 years and I had a traxxis slayer, so I gotta get my feet wet again myself. Videos like this help, thanks!
Put 8 on. Of weight on front bulkhead area top plate you will not have to worry about wheelie. You will get better speed numbers.also Grp tires will improve your top speed .Love your videos
On the 2wd, a very cheap and easy way to strengthen the front bulkhead is to fill every cavity with epoxy, you can also add tire weights to help keep the front end down while driving. On my slash I use 28g weights stuck in the middle of the front bulkhead and 14g or 1/2oz strapped to each of the front a-arms, really makes the difference while driving at any speed and keeps the center of gravity low.
I have one... Rebuilt the transmission 5 times... The car just destroys the differential... Even with hardened steel planet gears, the diff just explodes... I have a hot racing aluminum diff housing, and finally on the 5th rebuild I installed the hot racing locked diff and has been holding up SO FAR... I have a stock stampede VXL and mine does the exact same thing at speed. The gear and battery recommendations (2s with high speed gearing (31/83 for the stampede vxl)) is actually the way I run my stampede VXL and it’s plenty fast and plenty fun and I can go flat out and actually keep the front wheels on the ground. My neighbors Rustler VXL can go faster because his slipper is more worn in so it slips more and it can actually go flat out and keep the wheels on the ground.
I changed the springs to the red ones and put sticky wheel weights on the chassis to keep front down. Also put speed hawks on the rear which helped it stay down.
I'm from Barbados and looking at buying this Rustler vxl 2wd and since we don't have any hobby shops here I'll have to import everything. What extra components would you recommend for an off road racing setup. Thanks
Mark put your handheld speed gun in the now obsolete draw, as the hand held need to be recalibrated regularly the police have to have theirs calibrated no longer than monthly to comply with the law as they often drift off being accurate, I goby the Sky-RC, the Dynamite, the Traxxas system or the Speketrum set up, but mostly the same as the new one you have as being the most accurate as it reads the same as my phone one I use in my offroad buggy as it has no speedometer.
What are the benefits of getting this one compared to the awd one? I know less parts for breakage but other than that. I really do like the black chrome wheels and green/blue body.
Easier and quicker to work on, cheaper repair bills for parts.... and rear wheel power for drifting and power sliding. Needs more gentle and precise control and driving.
We’ve definitely come a long way I remember getting my first digital computer FM radio system in the late 90’s one of the features was ABS I remember thinking using that was cheating because you could still grab full brake on a 2wd truck or buggy without sending it into a spin (you still had to adjust it) that was a high end $300 radio back then now stuff like AVC or TSM comes with RTR’s and relatively inexpensive systems then there’s the speeds 40-50+mph for a RTR 2wd truck or buggy didn’t just happen like it does now it usually required a trip back to the LHS for the hottest motor on the shelf a 7cell NiCad or NiMh battery and a pinion even then it probably got close but didn’t happen
My Bandit does the exact same thing, no matter how much I give it. I’m gonna put a wing on the front to hold the front down and see what happens. Good luck!

Love my rustler Vxl. I’ve got 68 out of mine. Haven’t drove it in a while
Love my rustler vxl!
Do Andaconda wheels matter if you have 4x4 or 2x2 ? Are there different fitment between 4x4 and 2x2? Thanks
No, tires are interchangeable
@@reidisaacson9623 Ok thanks!
@@Ezduztube I mean obviously on a 2wd, only the rear tires are driven but tires arent specific to one vehicle.
@@reidisaacson9623 I have a Rustler Vxl 4x4 wanted to know if I need a specific Anaconda tire wheel combo.
What are the benefits of getting this one compared to the awd one? I know less parts for breakage but other than that. I really do like the black chrome wheels and green/blue body.
2wd = less rotating mass. So technically it can go faster with same power unit
Easier and quicker to work on, cheaper repair bills for parts.... and rear wheel power for drifting and power sliding. Needs more gentle and precise control and driving.
I reckmend the rmp wheel bar.. Tip of the day.😀
We’ve definitely come a long way I remember getting my first digital computer FM radio system in the late 90’s one of the features was ABS I remember thinking using that was cheating because you could still grab full brake on a 2wd truck or buggy without sending it into a spin (you still had to adjust it) that was a high end $300 radio back then now stuff like AVC or TSM comes with RTR’s and relatively inexpensive systems then there’s the speeds 40-50+mph for a RTR 2wd truck or buggy didn’t just happen like it does now it usually required a trip back to the LHS for the hottest motor on the shelf a 7cell NiCad or NiMh battery and a pinion even then it probably got close but didn’t happen
I want to see it break 100! Whatever you gotta do. Maybe try some foam tires and a castle system
Dude… 100 is way harder than it sounds…. Hahaha! That might be what i do.
My Bandit does the exact same thing, no matter how much I give it. I’m gonna put a wing on the front to hold the front down and see what happens. Good luck!
Try loosing the slipper clutch until it slips for a couple feet.
First car I ever had back in 98 I believe along with my clod buster lol. But after seeing this video I think I need to buy another one. Lol
are the anacondas the same height as the slash 4x4 vxl tires
Im about to buy the gree brushless MAXX ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL TRUCK BUT I. GOING TO BUY MY rustler or stampede for. stampede for my sons first rccar which one do you ŕ.slash or rustler which one do yòùrerecòmend0
Hey Mark one more thing how can we get your merch like tees 3xl 4xl because they shrink in the dryer so if I get the 3xl and put it in the dryer it shrinks down to a 2xl so that's why we buy a size bigger then we actually where???
We get a few 4xl but they do sell out quickly. Are you signed up on the msmvlog.com newsletter? We'll def release new merch!
I bought an xl-5 and upgraded to brushless. I can’t keep it from lifting, any suggestions on how to fix that? Should I expect the same speeds as the vxl? Or is there some other parts needed to get it to the same level as vxl?
front end lifts.. you ain't driving no more, your just holding on.
Truth
Lol that's why my rustler got a wheelie bar till that fails
Isnt this the same for any car 4x4 or 2wd
Right i put some weights in the front to help and stiffened the body from flapping when it lifts i bought it brushed and completely upgraded it to a brushless set up from castle the copperhead with a 5700 kv 23t pinion and a 84t spur thing riips wheelie machine aka donut master
And tires i cant keep a normal set on there just too fast i had to stop at a 2s pack if i go to a 3 or 4s the tires just fly apart
You need to try the arrma typhon 3s Mark it is awesome and very strong 👍👍
I love the traxxas rustler my first one was the nitro rustler and then the vxl rustler but I had a Schumacher storm nitro with 3 speed gbox before the vxl rustler the Schumacher storm nitro was crazy fast and I got the hpi firestorm flux 77mph+ they can't keep the front end down even with a bit of weight on the front of all of them I love all of my rc cars but I love the nitro rustler great video they are all crazy fast keep the great videos up
Put a castle 3800 in amd run it on 3s. It will smoke the vxl motor. Been there done that
Hey mark love the vids man but we need more than just traxxas cars maybe losi arrma element redcat team associated etc. but if not I’ll still love you lol keep up the good work buddy
HEY MAN SO HOW IS THE BRUSHED RUSLER OF THAT TRUCK. I WAS THINKING OF GETTING ONE. NOT SO INTO BRUSHLESS.
Good all-round car for the price and if you want more stability install the Proline Pro-trac suspension kit (PRO606200) made a huge difference to mine.Do you think that Traxxas may do an updated version with the new magnum 272r transmission?
They upgraded the rustler and a few others with the 272r. They look better too
Heck yeah!
Whats the difference between normal version and vxl..i have stampede 2wd brushed and today i found some used old one stampede vxl.cant find online whats the difference
Hey Mark, probably a dumb question but can u turn a 2wd into a 4wd?....I know you can turn a 4wd into 2wd.
A very good video. it would be interesting to see it bashed at high speeds off road or at a skate park. That would test its durability.
Hi Mark,
Did you make any changes to the steering system? Any recommendations on that part?
Is it worth to go to aluminum servo arm and aluminum steering subsystem? Any suggestions on servo-saver modifications?
As usual great videos and I also loves my rustler 2wd vxl
POWER HOBBY SERVOS
Gotta get those tires warm
Thats why I have the Hot racing transmission case. The clutch slipped so hard it got hot 🔥 and melted the transmission
Slipper Eliminator
I run my rustler vxl all day with no lifting from the front.. I'm running the ford fiesta rally wheels all the way around.
