And let's be real here, if the cpu and gpu of a system are crap, having a ssd isn't going to grab you an extra $ 50 or so. Maybe a max 10 bucks, that's it. And the only reason he upgraded the RAM was because he's already having it for free.
you're not wrong but you also have to consider if it's even worth buying an ssd that's probably cost as much as the whole laptop is worth now. I'm sure if he had a spare SSD he would've upgraded but I guess he didn't
100% agree, if not swapping the thermal paste he could have at least taken an air duster (of which he has) to the cooling system. An SSD would have been a wise upgrade.
@@aleksazunjic9672 I own one of these. It's not a huge waste of money. Putting an SSD in it extended it's useful life by several years. In fact throwing an SSD in old systems is one of the cheapest, biggest, and easiest upgrades you can do to extend the useful life of an old computer.
When alienware laptops were much simpler to upgrade. The last alienware i had you needed to pull the entire motherboard just to change the thermal paste.
I have seen in the inside of a lot of recent Alienware laptops and there are no issues. Even Dell's budget gaming range mostly have instant access to changing thermal paste. What model did you have!

It would have been really better if you had swapped the HDD for a SSD, changed the thermal paste and given it a nice dusting! And maybe a decent mod like a vinyl wrap (carbon fibre touch 🔥)....
Should have saved the money in replacing the keyboard and put it towards an SSD instead. I'd rather have a different region keyboard with an SSD than a region correct keyboard with an old slower HDD. Since SSD's are insanely cheap. Even a 128GB SSD would be around the cost of that keyboard.
I just restored one. It runs perfect all the 360 gen games, is a great laptop in general terms. Still usefull for nornal use and light or retro gaming. Sadly the lack of support of dx11 on the r2, limit the use for fortnite and rocket league. Tested mass effect trilogy, modern warfare trilogy and many other games from that generation and runs great. Love this machine

@@junethefirst Mainly regarding the potential of upgrading the HDD to an SSD. You can get a dirt cheap 128 or 256 GB ssd which would be perfectly adequate for this laptop and transfer all data from the HDD to the SSD using a FREE utility such as HDD Raw Copy to keep all the OG Alienware windows skins and software. Basically any SSD will be faster than a laptop hard drive especially an older and used one. I don't care what anyone says No old laptop HDD will beat any modern entry level SATA SSD.
@@P2PC Not a joke, swapping a system HDD with an SSD makes it much snappier because OSes have a lot of small random reads/writes, which an HDD sucks at, and very noticeable latencies. Even the cheapest, DRAMless SATA ones make a world of difference for system responsiveness.
I would like to see some dusting or light cleaning in these videos. Not only is it somewhat satisfying to watch, but also, it makes things much easier to sell when you can present a clean used prouct.
US Keyboards do have a pound sign. Ironically enough it's in the same location as the UK pound sign, although of course the actual shape of the pound sign looks quite different. Although Gen Z might know the symbol as a hashtag sign instead.

Just throwing in a cheap ssd can make a old laptop feel modern again, at least for desktop/office applications. The sheer annoyance of having to wait for minutes after turning it on, before you could do anything worthwhile, is enough for many people to retire an otherwise perfectly functional device.
We can rag on how crappy this laptop is now for gaming but 2011 me woulda died for one of these. I had a acer laptop with an i3 and 2gbs of ram and a 500gb hard drive. Played league of legends at medium settings but couldn’t do much else gaming wise.
Yeah this laptop was released at a time where everyone was playing on Xbox 360's and ps3's. It's certainly a great choice for portable gaming. I got the r1 used for £200 in 2014 I think.

Waste of money. This is now casual Windows surfing/video/office machine. It is better to have larger HDD then some small SDD. Even changing keyboard was unnecessary, he should have simply gone with pound stickers.

My Alienware M14xR2 had the rubbery stuff all worn down so it was super sticky. Yesterday I spent 2 hours rubbing it down with 100% isopropyl alcohol and now it's paper smooth. Before doing that I tried eucalyptus oil but that just made it more sticky
I think the important difference between the UK and US keyboards is the position of the '@' symbol. If I have a laptop that has defaulted to a US keyboard I keep forgetting the @ symbol is in in the upper case position on the '2' key. I have sometimes heard US Americans calling the '#' symbol the pound symbol.
The # symbol is a hold over from the telephone days, and yeah, we in the US call it the Pound symbol. It is still relevant when dialing some short codes, bit even these are generally deprecated in use.
I actually picked up a box of old ram off of ebay for like $85 and so far I've sold a bunch of ddr3 2gb modules for $30 and found 4 working sticks of ddr4 4gb 2133mhz ram which I gave to a friend for his build. As with the other laptop and desktop ram modules, I have 0 clue what to do with them hahaha. Been trying to make cheap emulation machines with older hardware (was considering the 775 socket but went with 1156 instead).

Not bad - that 2GB of single channel memory was certainly far from optimal! At least you can keep the stick, so you can bump up another machine from 2GB to 4GB. The UK keyboard is a nice touch as well, though I'd have only replaced it if the original US keyboard was actually faulty. Other things I'd have done differently would have been: checking the battery capacity (and replacing it if the capacity was too low), checking the hard drive size and health (and possibly replacing it with an SSD - you can get 250GB SSDs for about £25 these days), and of course, giving the machine a thorough internal clean. That laptop did look a bit grotty inside (isopropyl alcohol or eucalyptus oil would have helped quite nicely), and I'd hate to imagine what the fan, heatsink, and thermal paste would be like. I might have also changed the wireless card to something better, like an Intel AC7260 - although at least the DW1520 supports 5GHz and 802.11n. 802.11a/b/g cards, as well as 2.4GHz only cards, do not belong anywhere near decent laptops in 2021.
In the US, the # on the number 3 key is the pound key. Is also the same on a telephone keypad and has been used as a pound key for way longer than it was as a hashtag.
I had one of these and loved it. I replaced some of the plastics with red to make it look cooler. I kept the name plate from mine when I sold it a couple years later.
Those things hold their value. I saw an old ass desktop replacement style one that still was like $1,000+ in a pawnshop. Made me feel less ripped off for paying like $1,300 for my gaming laptop.

@@siyzerix Yea it's a 9750H but that was newest mobile cpu out when I bought it. It's holding up really well. I had to undervolt the cpu and gpu a little bit but now it has absolutely no throttling or thermal limitations it's a beast. And it came with 16gb of RAM so that was nice.

I remember having a Toshiba laptop that had the predecessor to the M.2 slot, an mSATA slot that i thought was broken because my WWAN card wasnt recognised, but later found that it was speciffically for SSDs. Had i know this was for an SSD i would have upgraded as soon as i got the laptop in, because playing games is OK while on an HDD, general office work is painfully slow from an HDD because you're wating several seconds for each of the dozzen or so program to load, and the more programs you have open, the more latency there is on the HDD

I just spent around $550 on an HP Zbook 17 G2. Well, $250 on the computer, with a 4700mq and 16gb RAM, and another $300 on an mxm gtx 1070

Not bad - that 2GB of single channel memory was certainly far from optimal! At least you can keep the stick, so you can bump up another machine from 2GB to 4GB.
The UK keyboard is a nice touch as well, though I'd have only replaced it if the original US keyboard was actually faulty.
Other things I'd have done differently would have been: checking the battery capacity (and replacing it if the capacity was too low), checking the hard drive size and health (and possibly replacing it with an SSD - you can get 250GB SSDs for about £25 these days), and of course, giving the machine a thorough internal clean. That laptop did look a bit grotty inside (isopropyl alcohol or eucalyptus oil would have helped quite nicely), and I'd hate to imagine what the fan, heatsink, and thermal paste would be like.
I might have also changed the wireless card to something better, like an Intel AC7260 - although at least the DW1520 supports 5GHz and 802.11n. 802.11a/b/g cards, as well as 2.4GHz only cards, do not belong anywhere near decent laptops in 2021.
I 100% agree with you man. He literally has an electric duster as well, he could have at least used that at minimum.
In the US, the # on the number 3 key is the pound key. Is also the same on a telephone keypad and has been used as a pound key for way longer than it was as a hashtag.

I had one of these and loved it. I replaced some of the plastics with red to make it look cooler. I kept the name plate from mine when I sold it a couple years later.

Those things hold their value. I saw an old ass desktop replacement style one that still was like $1,000+ in a pawnshop. Made me feel less ripped off for paying like $1,300 for my gaming laptop.

@@siyzerix RTX 2060 and a I7 6 core 12 thread and a 120hz monitor. I didn't get ripped off bro. You rarely can actually get those specs any cheaper. And it was bought before 3,000 series or 10th gen intel launched.

@@siyzerix Yea it's a 9750H but that was newest mobile cpu out when I bought it. It's holding up really well. I had to undervolt the cpu and gpu a little bit but now it has absolutely no throttling or thermal limitations it's a beast. And it came with 16gb of RAM so that was nice.

I remember having a Toshiba laptop that had the predecessor to the M.2 slot, an mSATA slot that i thought was broken because my WWAN card wasnt recognised, but later found that it was speciffically for SSDs. Had i know this was for an SSD i would have upgraded as soon as i got the laptop in, because playing games is OK while on an HDD, general office work is painfully slow from an HDD because you're wating several seconds for each of the dozzen or so program to load, and the more programs you have open, the more latency there is on the HDD

came down here just to say this! the youngin's never knew it by the pound sign, only the hash sign. i say youngin's, but i'm only 34! it's funny how fast history can be lost on a new generation!

Old vid, but if possible I'd unplug the battery first. Replacing RAM without unplugging it is probably fine, but a good routine to get in is unplugging that battery first
