I’ve built a 16 inch in 6mm ARC. Custom Criterion Core barrel. I am not an accomplished longrange shooter, but I was consistently ringing steel at 800 meters. I’m sure someone more skilled can reach 1000 meters plus with a 16” carbine.
Also built a 6mm ARC for a next-gen deer rifle. The most difficult problem is finding the brass which I'm having to make from 6.5 Grendel. I'd only been looking for a year. Finally I have to reload as California only allows Non-toxic ammo, which Hornady does not make.
I think 6mm ARC is the future. Build reliable 25 round mags for it and it's golden. It has more energy at 800 yards than 5.56 has at 500 and is over the 1000 ft LB of energy out to 300 yards which is pretty much a 1 shot drop. Compared to 5.56 only have 1000 ft LB out to 100 yards and you see the 6 ARC is far better
I read an article a little over a year ago where a special ops team had done some testing on barrel lengths. It was somewhere around 10 - 12 inches that the trajectory matched a .308 so they could use a scope marked for distance for .308 but the whole package was a third less in weight.
I'm just finishing a build in a 20" 6mm ARC and I can't wait to take it to the range. So excited to try out this round. I wish it were easier to find the ammo. More companies need to make this round!
This has very similar ballistics to .280 British. I think it's pretty interesting that we ended up in almost the same place in terms of developing intermediate cartridges.
I've been intrigued about this round since hearing so much about it from your shot show videos. Seems like it's going to be an awesome round hopefully it can find it's footing and take off
6mm military trying up grade so deal with armor personal without increase cost much. We went 5.56 cause cost NATO Europe went to it now real body armor fielded and military trying deal with it without to much cost.
Well it doesn't have much advantage over 6.5grendel. Match grade 6.5grendel like federal berger actually have a higher bc bullet .560 vs the best 6arc honady a tip match with bc of 511. And cheap 6.5grendel combined with ammo shortages and hornady being the only manufacturer may hamper its sales
I feel like the grendel was trying to fit too big of bullet in too small of a case. This was addressed to an extent with the 224 valkyrie. The 6mm arc seems similar to the valkyrie, but with the advantage of heavier bullets. It seems like a really good balance.
Not really 6.5grendel federal gold metal match has a bc of .560. The best 6arc hornady a tip match has a bc of .511. They both go subsonic at 1200yds. And grendel is popular in Europe and russia. Unlike 6arc witch is USA only and hornady is the only manufacturer of it. I think it will be hampered by ammo shortages causing people to stay with more standard cartridges over 6.5grendel or 6arc.

Hence a round with a similar BC but gong 200 feet per second faster will be flatter shooting. It's just how it works. I would rather have a rifle in 6mm arc than 6.5 Grendel. I really hope this round takes off. Keeping its velocity above 2200 feet per second at such long distances is why this round shines.
I'm the opposite I prefer grendel. It has better bc. Heavy bullets. Federal Gold Medal Match Berger 6.5grendel has a bc of .560 velocity 2550 Vs the best 6arc with bc of .536 at 2700fps. So higher bc hevier bullet with better ballistics and lethality.
I have two rifle's in 6 ARC now and I love the cartridge. One AR-15 18" barrel and a Uintah Precision UPR-15 upper receiver. My UPR-15 took it's first elk with the Hornady Black 105gr.
I bought a Grendel simply because there has been feeding issues with the 6mm ARC using Grendel magazines. Apparently Geissele has solved that by making proprietary magazines. I would like to hear more about this subject
I had a 6mm arc ar15 and kept having feeding issues very often, using different grendel magazines. Didn't seem to matter which ones. So I gave up on it for now. I love the round though. I really hope the geissele mags fix the problem
I'm staying with the 6.5 Grendel. For my hunting and shooting conditions, it just does everything that I want it to do and does it well. I like the larger frontal area and the 120 grain weight of the bullet. If I want to go smaller, I'll just put the .223 upper on and bang away. Thanks for sharing.
Can someone explain why would,go with 6 mm arc instead of the more readily available 6.5 Grendel especially since the weight and bullet seems identical and 6.5 Grendel is more available?
@@Mithradates_of_Los_Angeles 6 arc is better for long distance shots. with better velocity on paper and whatnot. so people chasing numbers like it. but I find that it defeats the point of an assault rifle. so yeah grendel is just better for the avg consumer.

I built a very nice, completely custom 6.5 Grendel using an Øx Firearms receiver set right before 6mm ARC came on scene. You never know if a new cartridge will take off or not, but now I’m wishing I had waited a while, and chambered it in 6mm ARC… this being said, 6.5 Grendel perfectly suits my needs, as I only plan to shoot out to 1k yards and hunt medium size game with it.

That's great, what's the cost per round compared to 5.56? What's the availability in bulk? Are there designated full time production lines at several manufacturers?
My first thought as well: How much per round since it’s only made by Hornady at the moment? I’m sure if this becomes a popular cartridge we will see more platforms and manufacturers to choose from which will draw down cost.
@@XDWX then respectfully, that's a hard no. It does nothing the 5.56 doesn't already do, and one is never going to get a 1000 meter shot in the deep south. It appears to be flavor of the month, but there is ALWAYS another month. If it's still around in bulk in a decade, maybe.
Great questions. I personally don’t buy into the latest and greatest marketing of new calibers and “improved” ballistics…..when well established calibers are still effective in achieving the objective.
6.5grendel is awesome. Cheap steel cased ammo. Better performance in an ar15. And has great longer range performance. In a lightweight package. Bolt actions. Ak47s and ar15s are chambered for it. Reliable magazines have been developed. And the cmmg powerbolt has done away with bolt issues
Personally.. I don’t need that much distance. 8.6 BLK is around the corner and has shorter package options. 12.5” Subsonic has more energy than 16” 308 WIN.
Personally..I need much more distance. 105mm howitzer is around the corner and has longer package options. Way more energy than 12.5" subsonic. Oh, gee whiz...apples and oranges. ;-)
150 gr going 2600 fps out a 16" = 2251 foot pounds For a subsonic bullet traveling 1100fps it would take an 838 gr bullet to match that muzzle energy. That's literally 1.6 ounces, that means it would weigh significantly more than a standard shotgun slug over 50% more. Lol. You have to have misinterpreted something at some point here because that round doesn't weigh that much lol while Q has not published the bullet weights of the loads they've cooked up yet, that just simply isn't realistic sorry Perhaps you read that the SUPERSONIC loads out of a 12.5" barrel match 16" 308. Lolol
Put my gas 6mm ARC together this winter. Cost me $650, minus scope, using Aero Precision blemished parts on sale. 22" button barrel and maybe upgrade in the future to cut barrel and foo foo trigger. I figure I can always reconfigure for a different caliber or use some parts in a bolt gun if I decide to go that route. Personally, I would never hunt elk with the 6ARC. I have other artillery for that, e.g. 270 Win that consistently put meat on the table. There was a reason the military was looking for a solution for the shortcomings of the 223/5.56, i.e. lethality at an increased range in the AR15 platform. The 6.5 Grendel has the same shortcomings. It may never be adopted by the military overall, but it is still an excellent AR15 round for some needs, perhaps the best yet. Remember there are countless cartridges that have not fit the bill for military use.
6mm-6.5 Grandel, 6mm PPC, 6MM-223 have been around for a long time. There iare no magic cartridges. There are alwsys trade-offs in mass, velocity, BC when limited to AR mag length. Really long, slippery BC bullet designs, seating depth, and the AR mag lenght hit a wall of compatibility. The 6mm is in a sweet spot, as a compromise, but it is a compromise. Personally the 6.5 Grendel is damn hard to beat as a AR hunting cartridge. Having played with 6mm AR wildcats for years, the 6mm is definitely a good projectile, but I would rather give up a little velocity and get a little more lead.
Grendel is better in 2 ways: bullet mass for hunting. And cheap steel fmj. That's it. 6mm has better BC with higher velocities. Its more similar to 224 Valk and 6.5 Creedmoor as far as being high bc, AND flat shooting. The only shortcoming is its still barrel dependant compared with 6.8 spc and 300 blk, but it obliterates both at long range, even from an equivalent barrel.
The cartridge diameter is too large for the AR15 platform, bolts break quick and the mags have bulging and feeding problems. The big green never looked at the Grendel seriously because of those problems and the 6Arc has the same problems.
I was getting ready to pull the trigger on one this week. D#$@ ammo is high and out of stock everywhere. I know its new but D$#@. so I went with 300 winn mag
I can't wait to try my Grendel and Arc and see how different they are in accuracy and velocity. As the Grendel cartridge is literally just a hair longer and the Arc bullet is a little more slender, hmmmmm.....🤔
It seems to be the best new little round contender for effective military use, or all range medium sized game hunting from a petite package with hardly any recoil.
Go 6.5grendel it has cheap ammo. Wolf steel for 7$ a box or ppu brass cased for 12$ a box. It's better for hunting. And has higher bc bullets than 6arc. The cheaper 6arc is 30$ a box. And only hornady makes it.
@@justinlance4174 you can get 7$ steel wolf now? The price shot up much higher. And PPU? I thought they stopped making it. These are prices I was buying both at 7 years ago, certainly not current year. Where are you buying PPU Grendel? I used to love that stuff. Good numbers for the price back in the day.
@@ravissary79 Any cartridge based on the 7.62x39 or 220 Russian will not work for a military cartridge in an AR15. They do not feed well enough and the bolts aren't strong enough. Build a bigger gun and mags to fit like LWRC did with the 6.8 and they'll work. Stick them in an AK and they'll work.
I'm loading my own 6mm ARC, for about .97 cents a round. That's with Hornady 108gr ELD-X'S... That said, I'm having a blast doing ladder tests, and working out loads for my 22" AR platform rifle. I never thought I'd ever be shooting anything but 5.56mm, but here I am. And the neat thing about it, is I'm getting way better results shooting at 300 yards with 6arc than with 5.56. I just picked up a pound of LeveRevolution, so will be at the range this weekend, working up a load that emulates the Hornady factory ammo. This is a lot of fun!!!
I’ve been waiting for 2 years for SanTan to get my upper and lower built so I can get my 6mm ARC finished. I’m also waiting on a carbon wrapped 18” barrel.
My 6.5 Grendel with 12" Faxon Gunner BBL in AR Pistol form hits half-size IPSC targets consistently at 350 yards using Hornady Black 123gr ammo with a 4" group prone with no support (no bipod or bags, just my arms/hands)... I see no reason to change.
I’m a Grendel fan. This is intriguing but how much more different to justify another rifle and round? How far will I shoot to make a difference and with a loss of mass does the velocity gained with the arc make up for it?
6.5grendel is better. Federal berger gold metal match 130grn 6.5grendel has a bc of .560 at 2550. The 6arc best hornady a tip match 108grn has a bc of .536 at 2650fps. Grendel has the higher ballitic coefficient heavy bullet moving almost as fast. Long range u wouldn't see much difference. And 6.5grendel has cheap ammo. And is better for hunting medium game. Both are not ideal past 800 900yds in my opinion anyway
I prefer 6.5 grendel over 6arc. Not much difference between the 2 at longe range using the best loads in both. But 6.5grendel actually has cheap ammo options like wolf steel cased. It sells around 5$ a box pre pandemic
It’s a .243 or 6mm Creedmoor with less juice that can be used with a mini bolt action or fired out of an AR15. All good. The platform options and bullet options make it special. It’s intriguing as many cartridges have been. It isn’t the Holy Grail. Don’t get worked up. It is a cute little cartridge though. Just like the Grendel.
ballistics aside, i'm just glad we still have innovation, and specialization. That's what will keep future generations interested in maintaining this industry.
I would have to see ammo availability and long term barrel characteristics. 6mm tends to have drastically more throat erosion than 5.56 and 7.62. So what is your barrel life expectation with 6mm ARC?
6.5 Grendel does everything I need it to do and then some. But the ACR is looking sweet. Who nows a 6mm ARC upper may one day find itself at my front door 😁
If I had the money when this cartridge was first released, I would have done it, but since the 8.6 BLK announcement, I'm more interested in seeing what that cartridge will do over the 6mm ARC.
Originally I was interested in the .260 Remington. At the counter at the local gun store was in that discussion and the guy next to me said "if your in the boonies and need more ammo will you find the .260 or will you find the .308?" Maybe the 6mm ARC is a hot round but as you noted only one company making it right now.
Finding 6.5 grendel has proven to be difficult at times. I built mine 2 years ago, 6.5 Grendel 18 inch fluted stainless 1-8 twist Aero barrel. Shoots like a dream, double tapped 18 inch plate @ 200 yards, I couldn't ask more from a round. But like I said availability is the down side.
Yup. Important. Super popular cartridges are impossible to find in any crisis situations. Lesser popular calibers tend to be in stock and cheaper for components. I always check brass availability before building a rifle. Many times, I buy the brass 1st (Lapua or Peterson).
It’s awesome to try to hear what you guys are saying when someone starts firing at the time you’re talking!!! Great way to mask everything being said!!! Do I have questions? Absolutely!!! How about refilming the video AWAY from the active HOT range!!! Seriously, you couldn’t go to a more private range or use a range that wasn’t being used by everyone trying out the 6mm ARC on full auto THE ENTIRE TIME YOU WERE FILMING????
Why would I choose 6mm arc over 6.5 grendel? Honestly, the 6.5 grendels extra mass out to 500 or 600 yards, seems like it would be my choice and hit harder.
Actually that extra weight works against you at extended ranges. The ARC has more velocity. If you look at hornadys web site on it they say it has better penetrating power out at 600ish(something like that) yards because it is moving faster.
@@mmardell9262 at extended. Im looking at a hunting cartridge for deer and hogs. 1000 yards is not even in the picture. 300 yards max and in is cool for me. But I hear at 500 to 600 yards, its still close to 1000 in energy. Let's face it, most wont even hit a target consistently past 600 yards
I own / built 3 6mm ARC’s. I have hunted with them and killed quite a few pigs with them . They are a legit hunting and long range accuracy round. Would I replace a 6.5 Grendel rifle with one if I owned that caliber first? No. Not enough difference in my opinion to warrant the cost to replace. If I was a guy on the fence between them, not owning either yet,,, I would lean towards 6mm ARC. The 6mm ARC can do everything the 6.5 Grendel can.. and then some more. Longer range supersonic, flatter shooting, less wind drift. Short range, it’s a wash. Both work equally well.
6mm arc would be a great caliber for my militia. We normally train to fire outside the range of the 5.56, so we normally use 6.5 Grendel, but this might be a decent upgrade.
@@crashdsnowman1 any bolt known to break and any magazine follower known to cause feeding issues should not be considered a choice for combat. There, fixed it for you.
@@theflyingwelshman5338It isn't the follower it is the mags are too narrow for the cartridges to stack correctly, stack them on a table and measure the width then measure the width of the mags inside. We have been dealing with that problem since 2005. The bolts have been open up too far, the rim around the case head is too thin and provides no additional strength to the bolt lugs. Only .139" of the lugs have 100% attachment to the bolt body, Watch the Grendel forums, every few months someone posts about breaking a bolt.
@@theflyingwelshman5338It's the fault of Bill A trying to shove a cartridge that is that big into an AR15, the rifle existed 50 years before the cartridge.
Depends on the use. A Valkyrie shooting 80gr ELDs will shoot flatter than any other AR15 cartridge. If you're shooting long range paper and Varmints the Valkrie may be the better choice. It has stronger bolts and feeds better also.
@@crashdsnowman1 agreed. I have decided to give it another chance. But I will be doing my own reloading and I'll also be changing the barrel to a faster twist. I don't think 1:7.5 is fast enough. BUILDING MINE AS I TYPE. Clint, love ya, but maybe not do an interview, ON the firing line, when people are doing full auto mag dumps of howitzers. Maybe.
Man I wanted one of these when the caliber first hit the market but then ammo disappeared and now that I’ve had time to think about it I really don’t see a big enough performance difference between the 6mm arc and 6.5 Grendel and I’m already all in on Grendel. Been shooting it for 7-8 years now I have a 12” 16” and an 18” Grendel now along with a couple thousand rounds on top of a bunch of reloading supplies for the Grendel. The 6mm arc is definitely better than the 6.5 Grendel I think but just not that much better. I regularly shoot my Grendel’s out to 600yds with no problem and its capable of way more than that. 6 years ago I sold my 270win deer rifle and all I’ve used since is a 6.5 Grendel even taken white tail with the 12” Grendel I have. A 120gn federal fusion is probably my favorite deer round but there’s plenty other good ones. I used the 115gn barnes vor-tx last year and really liked them. Speaking of velocity those fusions are getting down range from my 18” at 2580fps and the 115gn barnes a little over 2600fps. I have some 100gn nosler ballistic tips handloads going almost 2800fps and the American eagle 90gn tnt are going over 2800fps. And there isn’t much drop off with the 12” barrel they average about 2300-2450fps from the 12” depending on what round it is. I think ima eventually build a 6mm arc upper just because this is merica and I can only thing holding me back is when I’ve seen ammo in stock it’s $2 a round. Another plus for the Grendel is they make wolf. The wolf isn’t the most accurate but it’s good for plinking and storing up on.
Yep they always compare low bc grendel vs high bc 6arc. Federal gold medal match Berger 6.5grendel has a bc of .560. 6arc hornady a tip is the highest bc 6arc and its bc is only .511. Both are supersonic to 1200yds. Grendel is better for hunting. 6arc is mayby better at long range. But neither are ideal past 900yds in my opinion anyway. I'll stick with 6.5grendel cause I use mine to hunt medium game.
@@justinlance4174 yep that’s mostly what I use mine for is deer hunting and in south Mississippi I really have no where to shoot any farther than 600yds anyways.
Barrel manufacturers must drool when they look at that round. Edit:throat erosion for those that don't know. It's like tire manufacturers promoting drift racing.
6.8 is the caliber the army's program is focused on. There's essentially 2 competing versions that shoot the same projectile at similar speeds. (Not SPC) The 6mm arc was developed to meet a DOD request for intermediate sized DMR use and the barret rec7 recce rifle, which the DOD ordered over a year ago. It would need to be more powerful to qualify as a competitor to the NGSW. But if they compromised and used it in the m27 IAR, or the m5 I wouldn't complain. It would still improve infantry effectiveness A LOT. 1000 yard capable even from a carbine. Terminally effective to 700-800 from what I've heard. But might not be useful at all for defeating armor past 200 yards or so.
My 6mm arc shoots flatter than my uncle's 6.5 grendel at 1000 yards. Both our rifles have the same scopes and his bottoms out at 1000 where mine still has room for adjustment. And mine is only 20 inches where my uncle's is 24.
On target: let's play around with that round and find the sweet spot ,different new bullet designs barrel threads, but all about the 6mm ,check in later
How does this compare to the 6mm creed? I guess I dont understand why people aren't using the 6mm creed in AR-10s as the round is almost perfect.

I built a very nice, completely custom 6.5 Grendel using an Øx Firearms receiver set right before 6mm ARC came on scene.
I have seen $1.50 -$2.00 per round as of the day this video is out.
From the video, it seems that Hornady is the only manufacturer right now. Costs will be sky high.
Great questions. I personally don’t buy into the latest and greatest marketing of new calibers and “improved” ballistics…..when well established calibers are still effective in achieving the objective.
Great idea but I have to wait & see. There was the .224 valkyre, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 spc all were supposed to be the next best thing.
Funny how the Swedes had it figured out over 100 years ago.
I can attest to mine being a tack driver, plus is very easy to make 1000 yard shots. It also blows coyotes out like a candle. I can't complain.
Only one that’s stuck around is the Grendel
6.5grendel is awesome. Cheap steel cased ammo. Better performance in an ar15. And has great longer range performance. In a lightweight package. Bolt actions. Ak47s and ar15s are chambered for it. Reliable magazines have been developed. And the cmmg powerbolt has done away with bolt issues
All of those choices beat the original 556. I love my Grendel.
Oh, gee whiz...apples and oranges. ;-)
@@OlTrailDog Enjoy your tree mile fantasy shooting. 👍🏼
Apples to oranges. Zero comparison.
150 gr going 2600 fps out a 16" = 2251 foot pounds
For a subsonic bullet traveling 1100fps it would take an 838 gr bullet to match that muzzle energy.
That's literally 1.6 ounces, that means it would weigh significantly more than a standard shotgun slug over 50% more. Lol. You have to have misinterpreted something at some point here because that round doesn't weigh that much lol while Q has not published the bullet weights of the loads they've cooked up yet, that just simply isn't realistic sorry
Perhaps you read that the SUPERSONIC loads out of a 12.5" barrel match 16" 308.
Seems like a really neat combination. But isn't the parent case, the 6.5 Grendel still superior?
According to hornady this cartridge carries more energy down range than the grendel.
@@mmardell9262 6mm Arc holds more accuracy overall especially at longer distances.

I got a 6mm ARC in a CMMG and i love it. It's an amazing round.
This is what the NGSW's 6.8 should have been.
The cartridge diameter is too large for the AR15 platform, bolts break quick and the mags have bulging and feeding problems. The big green never looked at the Grendel seriously because of those problems and the 6Arc has the same problems.
Seals are already using this round...it extends engagement distances well without much tradeoff in weight ..recoil..ect
6mm will shoot flatter, a 95gr SMK hits around 2800 out of an 18" barrel.
We need a 6 ARC VS 6.5 Grendel
Both dumb.

Hornady Optimized the 6mm arc for 18" barrel
Hornady copied the 6mmAR, 243LBC and 6mm Predator that had existed 10 years before they renamed it the 6mm ARC. They didn't optimize anything.
Definitely interested. Of all the newer cartridges to come out, I'd be thr most likely to adopt this one

Been on this cartridge for a little over year reloading, experimenting etc love this round
Looking forward to the 277 fury when it becomes mainstream but this can scratch the itch in the mean time
Yes to the 12.5 6 arc. Would be interested in that
I’m a Grendel fan.
Yes! 6mm Arc is the future for the AR-15 platform.
ballistics aside, i'm just glad we still have innovation, and specialization.
I never seen Clint this excited. A range day to remember
Great content as always!
Exciting news about the 6mm Arc!
I have 6mm ARC and also the 22 ARC. I like the cartridge.
Is a 6mm upper a true swap- out for 5.56 or do you need to fiddle with buffer weights and springs?
Mags are hard to find, bolt face is weird, weak sauce compared to 308
One: has Stag finally staked their castle nut? Two: does it suppress anymore than a 556 that still requires ear pro.
It's 6mm, so you can't use a 556 can. The next option is a .30cal can which would not suppress as well.
I have been trying to get my hands on a 6mm arc rifle for the past year and still no luck

Grendel holds supersonic in a 18" barrel to ~1150 yards but with 20% more weight. 6mm holds supersonic to 1200 with 22" barrel. Its no comp

I would have liked to have seen more full automatic firing from all of you guys.

The 6mm arc was developed to meet a DOD request for intermediate sized DMR use and the barret rec7 recce rifle, which the DOD ordered over a year ago.

How does this compare to the 6mm creed? I guess I dont understand why people aren't using the 6mm creed in AR-10s as the round is almost perfect. Heavier than the 5.56 at almost double and it Flys like a lazer, long and straight with minimal drop & wind drift. People use it in competition so its great at long range
