    I think my version of "box ticking" has been feeling obliged to own a variety of colors and styles. Growing up, wearing the same clothes too often was a reason to be teased. Like it might mean a person was poor and didn't own enough clothes, or was unclean because they were wearing things that had not been washed.
    I don't think it was until my 20's that I really second guessed it. I remember being in a dressing room looking at a shirt I liked and hearing my internal mother's voice saying "well, you already have a black shirt, so you should get it in red instead" and I finally thought back "No! I like black." And I knew if I got it in red, I'd never wear it anyway.
    Wearing some variation of black shirt + cardigan + a skirt or jeans every day is just so much easier...aside from having to unlearn the belief that wearing the same colored shirt 2 days in a row is some kind of social faux pas...

      That’s so interesting! I definitely think it’s tough to unlearn lessons about clothing that were drilled into you while growing up. Good on you for trying to push back against that voice!

      Me too!! I have an odd amount of stripey tops for someone that doesn't actually like them much. And I sort of came to the realization that I literally only buy stripey things because they are my way of trying not to be so 'plain' and 'boring' with my clothes because I got crap for wearing the same stuff all the time as a kid. And of course I wear lots of black too and constantly get told to wear more colour 🤷

    Not a spreadsheet person, so when I was trying to clean out my closet, I used this system: When I do laundry and hang things up (I hang up most everything) I put the newly cleaned clothes on the left and gradually the things I do not wear move right. Every few months I look at the stuff on the right and assess why it is there. It might be I don't like the fit, the way it feels, the color, or it is stained, thinning, and wearing out, or is it more seasonal (they have a place in the closet). I take out those that aren't being used and pass them along. If it is worn, it becomes a cleaning cloth. I also check to see if I need anything and usually head to eBay for what I want. I have been doing this for years and have had fewer and fewer items to pass along.

    • @JO-rx4tk
      @JO-rx4tk 2 года назад +1

      My method is very similar!
      I've been doing Thredup instead of ebay though, because I send them the stuff I don't wear and then use my store credit to buy replacement pieces when stuff wears out/no longer fits/etc.

    I tend to do similar “box checker” purchases, but I’m pretty dang picky about those specific items (shoes are my least predictable “will I wear it” type of box ticker items). I am in the process of making a Chanel-inspired boucle suit for myself, and when picking the fabric swatch I liked most, I gravitated toward the one in my favorite colors. I was a bit concerned about how versatile it would be, but then I held it up to my closet (which was actually mostly full at the time!). When I lost count of outfits I put together in my head, , based on the coordinating pieces I already had and liked, I knew I had the right fabric. I’ve described my closet as a mega-capsule wardrobe, because so much of it mixes and matches together.

    nice. really nice :) it makes me think of the (much simpler) idea of turning all your hangers backwards all at once, and wear everything like normal, turning hangers the right way when you wear something. At the end of the season, look at the hangers you haven't turned around, and if they aren't costume pieces (or, say, your 'best funeral suit' or something), then store, thrift, or give everything else away.
    My closet is a bit like yours, in that virtually every piece is either old (often 10 years+), thrifted, or hand made. i think it could definitely do with a thinning though. thanks for the inspiration!

    • @EmilySnee
      @EmilySnee  2 года назад +1

      Definitely a great way of doing it! If I was only going through it for myself and hadn’t been planning a video, the “turn around all your hangers” system is definitely what I would have gone with.
      But because I wanted to be able to see how many times I wore different pieces and what my most worn items were, the spreadsheet was the best solution I could come up with!
      If you do tackle and wardrobe thinning, then good luck with it 😁

    Well thanks a lot Emily! Now I have to go take a look at my closet and do a really honest evaluation of what I'm wearing on a day to day basis. I suspect more than half of what's in my closet is going to be headed for new homes soon.😄

    • @EmilySnee
      @EmilySnee  2 года назад +3

      I hear that! I’ve put all the “seasonally appropriate” clothes that I didn’t wear to the side and have made some solid decision about what I’m going to be sending to a new home.
      Although I have also put some of them into what I’ve named the *consideration station* because I’m not entirely sure if I’m ready to part with them yet 😅

    I always love your videos filled with various sources and graphs (my BF is working in Data Visualisation so we always love good graphs !)
    This year, I started to change my consuming habits towards clothing. I am the kind of person who always wear the same stuff (black pants or jeans) with plain black tee shirts, short or long sleeved depending on the season and sometimes I feel like my style is lacking of personality... but, because I really struggle finding clothes that fits me since 10 years, shopping is less and less enjoyable so I always shop 1 or 2 times a year, when everything is worn out and that I have no other choice.
    Like many, I have items that I never wore, or maybe 1 or 2 times, because it's too outside of my comfort zone or because it's too small and that I am saving them for "later, when I will be slimmer"... Watching your video about the clothing sizing really helped me and last weekend, I did a big purge and got rid of all the items that doesn't fit my body or that aren't my style and it was really painful to do. This year, I also started to buy clothes second hand rather than new and I really enjoy it (my only exception for the moment are pants... because of my mensurations, it's too complicated to buy online, I really need to try the clothes in shops). And my next step is to learn how to make clothing myself. So I will finally be able to wear pants that fits me perfectly and that are confortable.
    But I still have lots of clothes in my closet, even after my big declutter so I guess, analyzing what clothes I am wearing like you did can be my next step !

    My "closet" is boring and I need to change it, lol. Because I am larger, plus size according to fashion but not in the extreme larger sizes, I tend to want comfort first everything else be damned. Nine basic t-shirts (a specific style but very comfy), about ten to twelve or so over shirts (men's for the same reason), two dark blue jeans and two basic black slacks. I really need to get off my butt and make some nicer over shirts that are fit to me or do some alterations. I have two jackets, I'm warm natured and our winters never last long in the southern US so we layer, but I would really like some vests to wear in the cooler months for layers. Now, jewelry on the other hand, yeah...that's a problem. I love making it and need to do some serious cleaning there! Oh, and by "closet" I mean shelves, cant be bothered to hang things and it's quicker to fold them as they come out of the dryer. And I haven't owned a dress or skirt in over twenty years, don't have a good figure for skirts, and never really liked dresses since I'm short and they just annoy me. Probably because I had to wear them to school until I was nearly 18 and they finally let us start wearing pants. We shall not discuss the polyester phase I went through for way too many years.

    The college wardrobe information was especially enlightening, as young women heading to university in the 1940s would have been fairly well off, for the most part - middle- and upper-middle class.

    This is such a fun project! As someone began (and did not fully complete) a KonMari tidy early-mid 2020, I have definitely "minimized" my closet, but taking that in-depth look by categorizing each item is quite fascinating. I'm hoping to move within the upcoming months, so maybe it's time to tackle a project like this to ascertain which items in my wardrobe can find new loving homes 🤔

    Ohhh, this is fun to watch! :D I started tracking what I wear in April, and plan on continuing until next April, to get a whole year of seasonal clothing.
    I don't think there's a single shirt that I wore more than ten times in two months, simply nessecitated by the fact that there's about eight weeks in two months, and I tend to do laundry once a week, sometimes even less frequently.
    Ah yes, the "I don't like it, but I constantly wear it" things. That's most of what I wear lol.

    I was thinking about having a capsule wardrobe, or at least a small wardrobe, and I felt kinda meh and bored by it. But then I thought- what if I *made* all of them. Boom. Instantly onboard. Because I can put so much care into making every clothing exactly how I want, so I love it to pieces (literally), rather than having lots more factory pieces that I sort of like one or two aspects of and switch out the aspects.

    • @EmilySnee
      @EmilySnee  2 года назад

    Most of my clothes are very similin style and colour. I wear them all year round with only a few items seasonal. I love charity shop shopping or carboots. I buy some clothes from the stores mainly underwear or items on sale. I have had a lot of my clothes for years. Most of all the jobs I have had over the last 30 years I wear a uniform so that cuts down on wear and tear of my clothes. Still need to have a sort out. Some of my clothes are in 3 sizes as my weight goes up and down due to my underactive thyroid

    Ok so is it strange, I have clothing in my closet that have the tags on that, I DO wear? and 50 pieces would be generous. I seem to be incapable of throwing anything away. I prefer to give it to someone who will love it as much or more than I did or give it to a second hand store as I try to thrift as much as I can, given the state of fast fashion being ugly as sin. I feel better buying my brand names at 1/2 price or better, than the ridiculous amounts they want for new.

    • @EmilySnee
      @EmilySnee  2 года назад +1

      I totally understand not wanting to actually throw things away, as in throw them in the rubbish/garbage. With clothes I don’t wear, I either give them to people who will use them, donate them to charity or charity shops, sell them on eBay.
      And I hear you on buying stuff second hand!

      Apparently it does, yeah! Or, at least it does for me - although I doubt other people’s closets would vary dramatically from mine and if the various studies and such that I read when I was doing research are anything to go by, most people’s closets totally match the Pareto Principle 😁
