I dislike it when they review devices that are Dbrand sponsored because the video ends up not showing how the device looks in its default state. I wouldn't mind them extending the video showing them applying the skin themselves though (would also be hilarious probably).
I thought the phone was super ugly, and that Samsung had just really screwed up the design and gone with some one-off charcoal finish. Then halfway through I realized it was some awful D-brands skin. So, I don't even know what the device looks like. And at this point, I'm so sick of seeing D-brands products on channels like JerryRig everything and LTT that I'm going to go out of my way to never buy them.
Wahots I totally agree with you. In a phone review I want to see what the, you know, actual phone looks like and not the D brand skin that's on it. I get that they sponsor the videos but there has to be a better way then covering up all of the review products with the skins so that we can even see what they actually look like in the review itself.
I do not even know how the phone looks like since you always put dbrand skins on it... I have nothing against dbrand, but can you keep the skins only on the ads and not on the review?
He prob a iphone user and is hating on androids. But you know what, I think samsung is more advance in my opinion then a iphone. And the Samsung galaxy S8 is very gorgeous phone. Dont be fooled by the cases. lol
That skin is awful. I won't be able to think of that phone without picturing the nightmare that was that tragically poor choice of skin texture. Good way to drive people away from dbrand I guess.

In my opinion the ad spot is much more fitting after the intro. Just my thoughts. It feels much better to have it after the intro and not before it because then you aren't jumping from one thing to another.
Juho Leiniö They're trying to fake us out. I was in the habit of hitting the L key to skip 10 seconds as soon as the intro was done. Now they're managing to sneak the brand name in just before I can skip, but it WON'T throw me off for long!
I feel the intro and outro is better now simply because how they didn't have to do two separate takes to integrate an advert. Never thought how unnatural it was to fade into an ad.
Anyone else had enough of dbrand on what seems like nearly every phone review on RUclips? I'd actually like to see the native unblemished phone for once.
I think there are some less popular reviewers that show that. I know there's "The Daily Note" (based in South Korea, specific to Galaxy Note devices), and a few reviewers based in India. However, I don't know of any in North America that aren't sponsored by Dbrand.
Yea man, i always say that They don't even have that many choices for skins. There are so many better companies out there, but they pay the big RUclipsrs to use then, so we are stuck. I just support the smaller tech Channels now.
fucking exactly. I mean i love dbrand sponsoring youtubers i like, but jesus christ, I want to see the unskinned phone for most of the video, not a skinned, customised phone. I mean sure, i can just go on the Samsung website, but I can't see all the angles they pull in on these. It's just stupid annoying now.
I don't get the front skins it just draws more attention to the bezel as it takes the glossy black look of the phone away which blends nicely when the display is off
I want a switchable battery a lot more for the possibility that the battery goes bad then I can just replace it. It adds to the longevity of the phone because over time batteries don't hold charges like if they were new too.
You need to do an update video because November 2017 they released the S8 active for T-Mobile and it has none of the problems that you talk about. it's awesome.
I've never had problems with crashes Linus mentions here. After a year of usage, i'm still in love with this phone. I'm furious that Samsung didn't make S9, S10 or S20 Active.
Linus, I understand that you have to show off that dbrand skin for the sweet sweet sponsorship money. However could you please show how the phones you review look without a skin applied? Maybe 50 percent of the video with the skin and 50 percent without it?
That's really odd about the crashing and locking up. I've had mine from the day it released and have not seen any of that. It's been rock solid. The battery life was a big seller, and the phone is damn near indestructible. I'd fully recommend it to anyone who wants a more sturdy phone...
I've had s4 s5 s6 s7 and now the s8 active this is by far the best Samsung I've ever had. I hated bixby at first but now I'm starting to like it. I recommend this phone
In the future can you please not showcase a phone with a dbrand skin on it? How are we supposed to know what the phone actually looks like? It's like filming/reviewing a phone while it's in some ugly, cheap case the whole time. Really annoying.
Come on Erik, this is a phone review. The commenters are far too entitled to care about that. They think money grows on trees in the shape of their parents. I mean, who cares about its features, its battery life, its operating system, its hardware...nah, you don't buy a new phone for what it can do, you buy it to be super fab.
At 1:13 I thought the start of the song was the USB device disconnected sound in windows, which scared me because I'm currently running a stress test on the computer next to me.
As far as I know, the Gorilla Glass 3 is more scratch resistant, while the Gorilla glass 5 is more shatter resistant. That should explain why newer devices have more scratches than older devices that have the Gorilla Glass 3.
The only phone I can work overnight with and do whatever I need without worrying about charging. Playing games, watching videos, texting phone calls, all night and come home with 40% easy. Standby time is crazy. Went to sleep in 💯% off the charger for about 6 hours, woke up on 💯%. 5 days standby time is ridiculously good. Best phone I ever had
Got my S8 active by accident, and it sort of grew on me, like a boil. Yes screen scratches are too easy, but I just put a screen protector on it all good. It has never crashed. I would like to do more with it so there goes my life watching RUclips videos. Very entertaining video.
It's literally unacceptable that gorilla glass has taken steps back on the quality. I mean, shatter-proof over scratch-proof? That's idiotic. I am ok with my screen braking when dropped, but hell no am I ok with my phone scratching with careful usage.
Man they can make it super scratch-proof but it is going to break super easy unless they cover the edges of the glass. That is their weak spot.I see what are they trying to do but i is not going to work. When i look the people around me 20-30% of the phones are with broken glass and that is the problem(not for samsung tho, becouse people buy a new phone after they break their old one)
Then be careful. I had a similar phone to an active, and that was the galaxy xcover 3 value edition. It had a plastic screen too, and it Never scratched because I simply never put it in the same pocket as my keys, and that's coming from a guy that doesn't even step outside the door without a key. And it survived 3 years until in high school someone wanted to play 'anger management'and failed, so he took it and slammed it against pure concrete with force.
Problem is also that they make the glass thinner every time. I had an old and chunky phone back in the days and the only time it got a (very small) crack was when I was mountainbiking and it dropped from around 1.5 metres on the stones. It got almost no scratches though. However, looking at the current phones, 1mm of glass would be way too much for them and I'm sure curved displays wouldn't be possible either.
With s8 and other curved screen protectors, that's not bullet-proof either. Due to the curved nature some dirt may get under the protector and cause similar damage. My s6 survived 9 months in the army with no screen protector, through multiple weeks in the woods and with no damage on the back or the front. And yes, there definitely was dirt and sand that got on the phone. So my point is, I'd take a harder more scratch-proof screen over shatter-proof due to the fact that there's no real way to avoid scratching, yet shattering is all about how clumsy you are.
I picked up a Galaxy S8 Active a week after my local ATT store got it in stock. This was in August and after using it for two months as my daily driver I can say that I have never once experience an unexpected reboot, screen has froze but very uncommon and not noticably more than my Galaxy S7, and the only app that I experience crashes with is Snapchat, which has happened to me on every Android phone I have used. I really do think the issues you mentioned are isolated to your device. I suggest that you try another S8 Active and see if the issues go away.
I've had my S8 active since the week after release and I've never had any issues with the screen freezing or random reboots or the screen not functioning when trying to unlock. I'd guess some sort of app could be causing some of these issues as I only play mobile mobas and use chrome/facebook/instagram, and music apps.
Just got my new S8 Active, which I got for cheap as a "parts only" for $68 and got a new screen from china for $197 after shipping and handling and it is an obviously big improvement from my J3 that I had! Definitely keeping this phone for a minimum of 5 yrs (or until it dies on me)
Gorilla Glass 3 is the most resistant, as far as I know. Didn't they need to make the glass a bit softer with 4 and onward because they needed to get those curved edges?
I've now had this phone since it's release. I upgraded to a note 10 plus I'm August and gave my 2 year old daughter this phone because it's INDESTRUCTIBLE!! I've thrown it into lake Erie, and into the Aegean sea and it worked perfectly fine. I've literally thrown the phone at walls and at a cast iron engine block with full force as well as drop it off a 3rd floor window on to concrete. Yeah it has micro scratches but mine never crashed and still works to this day. If it were to ever break or battery were to eventually go I'll buy a refurbished one off Amazon. I'd recommend getting a wireless charger as my charger port did short circuit, so I can only wireless charge BUT still a great phone if you work construction or have a kid that can be destructive and you don't wanna spend money on a tablet, this is the way to go.
Your reviews make so much sense. I agree with you so much. I do wish Samsung would appeal more to both tech groups and average consumers and allow bootloader unlocking for performance and UI tweaking while keeping security intact for those that care that much about it.
I would rather Corning focus their gorilla glass products on scratch resistance than on shatter resistance to be honest. Scratches are way way more common then full shattering of the screen.
I use custom software on my droids, and the issues you experienced with samsung ux are similar to what ive faced. ive always believed that Samsung's havent had enough ram since android 5.1/galaxy s6 and later. 4GB of ram for samsung just isnt enough for their bloated software anymore.
I was wondering if you would still recommend this phone now that it is nearly 2 yrs old. My wife has the S6 version and likes it but its starting to show signs of age.
Makes me even more glad that when it was time to upgrade from my AMAZING NOTE 5, that I took a chance and tried the iPhone 8Plus instead of settling on ANY of Samsung’s compromised devices. My wife had the S8 Plus, and nothing but problems!
I think you're right about the glass. It seems to be more shatter resistant, however, is softer and less scratch resistant. Take plexiglass for example, super shatter resistant but scratches super easy.
Do you really have to put a Dbrand on it, idk maybe we would like to see how the phone looks? Get your AD money, but don't rub the AD in our faces, thank you.
Gorilla Glass 3 was more scratch proof than Gorilla Glass 5. With 4 & 5 they began focusing on shatter proofing and thinning/lightening the glass. So the number no longer defines superiority when going from 3 -> 4 -> 5. Personally Scratch Proof > Shatter proof for me any day, since the shatter proofing largely doesnt work, but the scratch proof would eliminate the need for a screen protector.
rolanie3 I bought a note3 when it got released. Still have it. The screen with no screen protector ever Stil is perfect. My s8 got almost instantly micro scratches.
Still rockin my s8 active in 2020... it's still a beast..phone size not too small or too big, rugged, great camera, perfect screen size, etc...alot of new phones since this one have come out, including iphones... but I haven't been intrigued enough to give this beast up...
i think that scratching part depends on Oleophobic coating used. It does not strengtheners the glass but it makes it scratch resistant by not allowing materials to get to easily stretchable glass ...
The coating that makes it shatter resistant is probably plastic. Which is soft. Microscratches will be present, but wont shatter. Why cant all phones have 4000 mA batteries?
Wistbacka Because people are concerned about style, so if it's too big that's not the style. Bigger battery = bigger phone. But yeah I'm into more practicality
they review pretty much every major flagship phone. The only way they would review more is if there were more good phone manufacturers like Samsung, Google, and the joke that is apple.
Love my S8 active. Dropped it off my roof yesterday (Halloween decoration mishap) onto concrete. Cracked the screen protector, phone has a little scuff on the rubber corner on the top. Why can't they just make rugged flagships a common thing?
the s8 has a super chunky plastic screen protector applied by the factory, thats why it scratches super easy. I can report it can be removed and replaced. I took it off, applies a tempered glass screen protector, then applied an iq sheild self healing plastic screen protector on top of the tempered glass for what is in my opinion the ultimate combo in screen protection. no chips or scratches in the tempered glass combined with the amazing impact protection of tempered glass, not to mention that by removing the stock screen protector it exposed a not-insignificant lip made by the phone frame, which actually protected the tempered glass edges, which in my experience are the most prone to chipping
I'm with you all these comments say note 8 is work version or same as active. note has the curved glass. I never broke a screen until the curved. I hate curved phones
My S7 active ia simply amazing. No problems, no crashes, no freeze. My gripe is the polymer they use on the gorrila glass 5. This coating Keeps the screen from shattering. But it scratches so easily, that I hate. I work outdoors all day and any dirt that makes it in my pocket , will scratch. Beyond that, I love it.
I have a bunch of those crashing issues on my s6 active. Also, this only really happens under 30%, but sometimes my phone decides to just restart in the middle of me doing something
If you're having software problems at 4% battery they can likely be put down to extreme power saving at that level. That's what that screenshot suggested to me.
For anyone wondering why the Gorilla Glass screen on the S8 Active, or on any other Gorilla Glass phone, scratches to easily let me explain. Gorilla Glass is extremely strong and resistant to hard materials that would otherwise cause light and deep scratches. However it is quite fragile when it comes to blunt force. Phone manufacturers (e.g. Samsung) compensate for this by applying a thick shock resistant plastic layer on the top surface. This creates a strong rigid screen that won't crack but unfortunately it does scratch easy. My advice is to get a screen protector, any cheap sub $5 one will do since if it gets damaged you can just peel it off and apply another el-cheapo screen protector. I for one ended up putting a tempered glass screen protector on my S7 Active. I call it Gorilla Glass Sandwich Technology.
I think whatever bloatware or tracking AT&T put on the phone is ruining it. I hope this isn't affecting users of the normal S8/+ on AT&T. I've got the + on Sprint and after some apps got updated (snapchat) it never freezes or crashes. My fingerprint scanner also takes me directly to the homescreen or w/e app i was using last. I never have to swipe out of the lock screen after... very strange indeed.
Also saying the word "Pee" with the new RUclips Censor Bot roaming around. We all know for a fact Linus isn't getting paid for this video. Welcome to 2017.
this video came at the perfect time. both middle-aged clumsy parents are finally looking to upgrade to smartphones but they're being put off by battery lives. i didn't even know the active line existed.
Those crashes sound like my current phone. The samsung galaxy s3. Think they accidentally gave the firmware from the S3 to the S8 Active then. Cuz I always notice that when your device gets older every firmware they seem to "accidentally" add bugs that make your phone unusable.
I been using the s8 active for a month and I never experience crashes or have to reset it. Never had a problem with the always on clock. But I did have problems with the finger scanner, it would not lock the phone and let anyone swipe to unlock it. I was able to fix it by changing it to "Immediately lock phone". But other then that there nothing bad I can say about this one. I used a few cases and didn't have issues (to test the sensitivity of the screen) compared to the s7 edge and s7 active. The battery is insane, i can go to sleep with out charging it at 100% and wake up to 90% and use it until 8 pm without a charge.
I loved the physical buttons on my s7 active, that is until my back button came off which of course happened after warranties were up. Add to that being a disabled veteran and single father of a slightly autistic son meant I wasn't exactly financially wealthy. I've been using sticks, stripped cutips, and occasionally the blade of my knive to fit through the tiny hole so I can go back. Hearing about no physical buttons on the 8 active is the single largest selling point. Finally after over 2 years of sticking it I can stop.

So my point is, I'd take a harder more scratch-proof screen over shatter-proof due to the fact that there's no real way to avoid scratching, yet shattering is all about how clumsy you are.

Driving with a broken windshield is illegal, bud.
Potencially dangerous, too.
really ive had one on my car all the way across the center for almost 6 years
RobSellsTacos I know you can have a cracked windshield in Iowa if it doesn't hinder the drivers view, don't know about other states though
hes in canada
Blame Canada!

Must be the dBrand sticker
Think I'll upgrade, using the S7 Active right now, and it's amazing
Just got my new S8 Active, which I got for cheap as a "parts only" for $68 and got a new screen from china for $197 after shipping and handling and it is an obviously big improvement from my J3 that I had! Definitely keeping this phone for a minimum of 5 yrs (or until it dies on me)
Please put the product name in the title for the love of god
Ugly Sisters need love too :)
These phones look similar in design. Twins?
HomeAutomationX Woooo We do love ugly sisters too.
Remember everyone, when you don't have talent Just use bodyparts to gain views.
^ lmao someone is throwing shade
HomeAutomationX well maybe you come to my place and we can figure somthin' out
Gorilla Glass 3 is the most resistant, as far as I know. Didn't they need to make the glass a bit softer with 4 and onward because they needed to get those curved edges?
That's true, but not for the active series, as they don't have edge displays.
I have a Note 3 with gorilla glass 3. It's on the 5th battery already. Never used any screen protection. And have ZERO scratches!
Rogerio Luis s4 mini coming up on 5 years of use, not a single scratch. we're going backwards here.
Scratches are way way more common then full shattering of the screen.
my s8 active has never crashed something is wrong with yours
blaze fox its because you never owned a s8 active
He isnt lying, even the previous gen S7 Active has the same issues
Silent Prototype Yeah tons of problems with my s6 active
My s8 active has none of these issues except the screen one which is why I put a protector on right away
If I had the s8 active, I would only use it for the 4000mAh.
I use custom software on my droids, and the issues you experienced with samsung ux are similar to what ive faced. ive always believed that Samsung's havent had enough ram since android 5.1/galaxy s6 and later. 4GB of ram for samsung just isnt enough for their bloated software anymore.
im using the S6 now and im considering upgrading to this when i can
2023 and I still use my s8 active. Bixby disabled because its stupid.
Still got my S6 edge , works perfectly fine.. going to switch to 9 next year
Saketh Kurapati I got my galaxy s8 lol
Good call
Wind Blade just switch to the iPhone X C is cheaper and better
Consumer 999
Nah definitely stick with Samsung there's just way better and actually innovative stuff coming from them
I think that my S6 Edge will stay with me for like another 3-5 years but I am still excited about the new S9 :-D
I was wondering if you would still recommend this phone now that it is nearly 2 yrs old. My wife has the S6 version and likes it but its starting to show signs of age.
i have this phone, its amazing
Get the s9 and get a case. It's way too cheap
S6 Active and S8 Active here and love them both.
Was there a challenge to make every video you did this week about cell phones?
Makes me even more glad that when it was time to upgrade from my AMAZING NOTE 5, that I took a chance and tried the iPhone 8Plus instead of settling on ANY of Samsung’s compromised devices. My wife had the S8 Plus, and nothing but problems!
I'm more disappointed by that disgusting DBrand advertisement
Might want to get that highly illegally cracked windscreen replaced soon Linus.
He dropped his car
Is it not possible that linus simply got a bad test unit? I havent had a single crash on my Note 8 in almost 3 months of use.
This is s8 active not note 8
I think you're right about the glass. It seems to be more shatter resistant, however, is softer and less scratch resistant. Take plexiglass for example, super shatter resistant but scratches super easy.
The reason of the scratches is the coating. It is made by a material quite similar to plastic... So, it is expected to have some scratches.
This is the best phone I know, for my purposes. Just stick a tempered glass on the screen to protect from scratching.
Nikita Dubrovskih thanks, I think I'm gonna get it
Do you really have to put a Dbrand on it, idk maybe we would like to see how the phone looks? Get your AD money, but don't rub the AD in our faces, thank you.
Un-Joshed you're*
It's most likely not ltts fault, dbrand most likely made them put the skin on for the whole video.
DBrand sent them the phone with the skin on it.
Thats how sponsorships work lol
@@p0s3s3sD And my Nokia 7 Plus got very many micro scratches, so I put an another screen protector.
Which is why I want the Oukitel k10000 max
so is it ok to just keep using my s6 active or should i need to upgrade? i love this phone too much too much, the durability is topnotch
I wish you guys did more phone reviews.
they review pretty much every major flagship phone.
Put a stylus with it and I'm sold. You had me at flat screen.
Overdrive buy a note 8 same phone and has a stylus
Kristi Ballard different phone. Have you seen the video?
Note 8 is kind of a work version of the s8
LG Stylo 4
I'm with you all these comments say note 8 is work version or same as active. note has the curved glass. I never broke a screen until the curved. I hate curved phones
What's the song in the background that starts around 6:37?
Should probably get that windshield crack repaired...
Yeah, windscreens aren't mobile screens. It's not OK to have cracks running along their length.
That let's you know this wasn't filmed at NASA
would have to replace entire windscreen for that, also that type of crack will not fail MOT most of the time
ah that crack isn't really obscuring the drivers view, so it doesn't matter.
S8 Active looks like an LG G6
LG G6 looks like the old note 5
@@azexy21
I own a 2016 LG K8.
I had the G6 I think its one of the sexiest phones ever imo.
Frankieare gray or black?
Titanium Labs black
Can't you review the phone without a skin? ffs.
idkthetime The skin maker is a sponsor.
idkthetime they get them from dbrand
idkthetime its 1:51 AM
Interspect was my
Making an S8 Active review whilst wearing an Apple Watch.
If you're having software problems at 4% battery they can likely be put down to extreme power saving at that level. That's what that screenshot suggested to me.
Whoa! Never noticed how gigantic that windshield crack was at 4:51!!
My HTC 10 has lately begun freezing just alike...
The active should never have a infinity display
7th gen still?
Awesome to finally see an active with top tier specs!
I never have to swipe out of the lock screen after... very strange indeed.
probably right
Assuming the phones gender.... its 2017 Linus you should know better
But it has female port...
You'd think that would be enough to say the phone's female... but then again, it's 2017 hahahah
On many "gender all the things" languages phones are male.
Also saying the word "Pee" with the new RUclips Censor Bot roaming around. We all know for a fact Linus isn't getting paid for this video. Welcome to 2017.
4:28 "illustrative purposes"
Don't be such a Lie-nus!
this video came at the perfect time. both middle-aged clumsy parents are finally looking to upgrade to smartphones but they're being put off by battery lives. i didn't even know the active line existed.
Those crashes sound like my current phone. The samsung galaxy s3. Think they accidentally gave the firmware from the S3 to the S8 Active then. Cuz I always notice that when your device gets older every firmware they seem to "accidentally" add bugs that make your phone unusable.
Please stop reviewing phones with skins or cases on them.
Manuel Auer Tweet dbrand. They're responsible for this. (Sponsorship, duh)
Sry for bad hi

You know english because you know the short form of sorry. You are a liar
real minecraft play no kidding
Or becuz of his bad English he spelt it wrong
Those freezes are resource issues.
