    Great review of the Marauder Expansion guys! The Keepers in Iron are definitely the hardest faction to learn and it will take a few plays to get a good grasp of how to work their puzzle. My advice is
    Build up the retinue ASAP. Bird cards in the first and last columns with suited cards in the second. Don't worry about ruling enough clearings to keep suited cards, just burn them and get the relics and recover them as quickly as you can. Don't be complacent about recovering them, the defensive power is not as good as it seems but it's highly effective on offense since you have 75% chance of taking no hits as attacker. Spread out and leave warriors behind in clearings with empty building slots for easy encamp and recruit, the more spread out you are, the more flexibly you can plop down a waystation and recruit up a big ball of Badgers. Decamp rarely, you want to have as many waystations on the map as possible because cards are super important, let the enemies kill the waystations for you so you can reposition them later.
    There are plenty more tips and tricks in my Keepers in Iron strategy guide on my channel. I made it awhile ago before I had my Marauder expansion so the pieces are stand ins but the content is still good info to get you off the ground. Good luck and don't get discouraged, once you crack the Badgers they are one of the strongest factions in the game.

    For Point Salad, you only use the full deck for 6 players. Otherwise, you have to take out sets of vegetables

      @chuckm1961 Год назад +3

      Ah, that's why they didn't like it. Yes, that would be ABSURD to play through the entire deck in a smaller player count game. YOU GUYS SHOULD TRY THE GAME AS DESIGNED! It's on my Top 30 of All Time shelf. Classic filler game.

    • @larsbeckmann4515

      PS absolutely is a great filler game. Scaling by taking out cards works really well. Tactically, due to the relative sparseness there is a more going on than might think at first. I highly recommend to try PS again.
      PS. Never told you, I love your videos! 😀

    So keen to see your Maruaders Expansion playthrough! When I was first researching Root and deciding whether to get it, I watched all your playthroughs and it really helped me understand the game. Now it's probably my favourite board game. I don't get many opportunities to break out the physical box, but I've sunk many hours into the Switch version. Likewise, I'll be waiting to watch your playthrough before making a decision on Marauders.

    I enjoy your content and the variety in format - enjoy your trip and Essen.
    Two points on the games you covered -
    1) Downtown Farmers Mkt / Point Salad - I recommend "It's Mine!", an older contract/quest in this space, designed by Dr. Knizia. I prefer the tension of the card deck being continually flipped until someone decides to either claim the deck portion already drawn or push their luck and wait to get more cards that might help in satisfying the various scoring criteria.
    2) QE player elimination due to having the least money is similar to "High Society" (yes, I know I live most things Dr K :)

    Thank you for another engaging video.
    1. Downtown Farmers Market- The art reminds me of a sheet of themed clip art. The designer simply used a shot of the sheet then added a layer above to put the game title on top of the clip art. I think Blue/Orange has shifted their offerings to compete more with Gamewright. Battle Sheep, New York 1901, Photosynthesis, Planet, and a series of games like Dr. Eureka was the high point for them about 4 years ago.
    2. Point Salad- This card game has worked very well at family gatherings. Easy to teach and play especially for those who do not play many board games.
    3. Ticket to Ride: San Francisco- We have the Ticket to Ride: London version in our collection. We too have used the original Ticket to Ride as a way to introduce board games. This series makes Ticket to Ride even easier to introduce. The cultural references in this series seem aimed at Boomers. I looked at the shots of the map and did not see any reference to Dirty Harry!
    4. QE- Your description of QE is very close to our experience with the game. Because of QE's uniqueness, we keep this in our collection as a go to auction game along with Furnace. You're right that QE can be very fun with the right group.
    Thank you again and stay safe on your travels.

    Just picked up the Marauders, Clockwork 2, landmarks, and all hirelings which was a hit to my wallet but after playing a three handed game to teach myself the new factions along with the one previous expansion I hadn’t learned yet I am so excited to try this out.
    First impression is that Keepers in Iron feels to me like the Lizard Cult where it’s a little harder but also pretty rewarding if you don’t mind losing most of the time and enjoy the puzzle. Lord of the Hundreds seems like it’d be a great faction to hand to newer players.
    Favorite hireling of the three I tried my first game is the stag, I think it comes in the underworld hireling box. Least favorite was the otter hirelings, but I may have been playing them wrong because something seemed ahem…fishy… about how many cards they handed out. Landmarks are cool but I haven’t tried the more interesting ones yet. I also like the new setup rules.
    I managed to fit all content except hirelings and clockwork in single package by flipping one lid upside down, so even though it’s a lot of content it doesn’t feel overwhelming storing it!

    What i love most about QE is playing with new groups (without established betting habits basically). It's just fun to see people experience the game arc for the first time. For that reason imo it wears out really fast, but imo if you play with different people a lot, there is a lot of fun to be had with it. Also, the mechanism of the player with the most expenses dropping out sounds really bad to a lot of people, which couldn't be further from the truth for me. The big reveal is always fun and the resulting discussion about where it went wrong really gets people talking (especially if people try to be sneaky and bid low on public info, but splurge when they want a tile or just going in guns blazing and getting the first 4 tiles, while everybody is gradually upping their bids. Just so many ways to mess with people's perception in this game) and reevaluating their bidding for the next game(s).

    Definitely check out NitroRev's channel, which has great strategy guides on root factions, including keepers of iron. But yeah, lord of the hundreds does seem strong when opposing players can't easily poop out warriors all around the map to waste their actions.
    Our group broke QE after we figured out the "secret" to victory, still fun to see the face of newer players when they realize they're still bidding in thousands while the rest of the table are bidding in billions... Lol our group is so freaking greedy when playing this game.

      Here is a strategy guide I made awhile back (like a long time ago, before the expansion was available to I used different pieces).
      The expansion was available as Print and Play for a long time so I had already many games with them and the principals I laid out in this guide should still hold up but adaptability is very important. I left another long comment somewhere in this video's comments section where I outlined very basic strategies but it's a really nuanced faction that requires that you internalize some core principals and just practice a lot.

    I'm curious about your Root cubby! Do you keep everything in its original box? I currently have all the factions, boards, and cards piled into one main box, plus a separate Hirelings box and a Clockwork box. Still a lot, but definitely a shelf-saver. But like you, I fear it might not be sustainable forever!

    Are the hirelings only good with 2 or 3 players? I know they were specifically designed for 2 players, but what if you put them into a game of 4 or more?

    • @theSolemnBard
      @theSolemnBard Год назад +1

      Each hireling is double-sided, and one side is less impactful. You always use exactly 3 hirelings (if you use them), but with more players more of them are on the "demoted" side

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev Год назад +2

      The Hirelings work at any player count but the thing about Root is that it was designed as a 4 player game and as a result, the 4 player experience doesn't really need the Hirelings to make the game feel stable and fair though you're certainly welcome to put them in your games if you want to. The 3 player game has always been a bit lacking beca6of how empty the board is and how if 1 player takes an early lead, it can be nearly impossible for just 2 opponents to meaningfully check them. Hirelings solve both of these issues and the 3 player game is now just as satisfying as the 4 player game. Same for the 2 player game though Root is just better with more than 2 in my opinion because the politics are part of what makes the game interesting and that's just absent in a 2 player game.
      Bottom Line, Hirelings work at 4 but the extra rules overhead and things to manage will add complexity that doesn't really need to be there but what Hirelings do for 2 and especially 3 player games is phenomenal.

    Any tips for getting my GF more into Root ? She loves the art and loves Marquise de Cat but did not like the conflict that much. We played with hirelings once. We play Unmatched and Summoner Wars as well and she likes them, maybe trying another faction? Thoughts?

    • @cesarpim
      @cesarpim Год назад

      If she's not much into conflict I suggest she either plays with the Lizards or the Adventurer vagabond. And in case she likes higher complexity and a harder challenge I suggest Riverfolk or Keepers in Iron.

    • @nitrorev
      @nitrorev Год назад

      Root is inherently a conflict-driven game but there are certainly some factions that can participate in the game without being too head-on aggressive. The Woodland Alliance is doing more of a movement puzzle and setting traps for the other players to deal with, while Riverfolk company is more of a merchant class that sells services to the other players and then focuses on crafting.

    • @joep2302
      @joep2302 Год назад

      With the clockwork expansion you can play co-op. It's a nice way for your girlfriend to learn the other factions. Especially when you don't like conflict with other players and don't mind fighting bots. It's fun to plan out how you can work together. Playing different factions also really helps making root click.

    • @cesarpim
      @cesarpim Год назад

      @@joep2302 in my homest opinion i wouldn't advise using bots because they add extra rules and extra work that is only used for bots and increases complexity without preventing conflict. Unless you need bots because of lack of reach. I rather suggest her to pick factions that become stronger when attacked (e.g. Lizards or WA) or factions that make lots of points without fighting (e.g. Adventurer vagabond). But it's just my opinion.

    • @joep2302
      @joep2302 Год назад +1

      @@cesarpim I assumed that he only played root with her at a 2 player count. In that case you will have to use bots (or hirelings) anyway to be able to play a 'peaceful' faction like the lizards or vagabond. Using the bots was actually pretty easy and straightforward for me and my girlfriend. It was what worked for us and made her understand and like root more. But of course this can be different for everyone.
