I ran a 4:26 mile this indoor season yet Alan would have finished roughly 40 seconds ahead of me. It's so absurd to think about the gap that would be between us, Congrats to Alan Webb for such an astonishing performance!!!

congratulations Alan Webb!!! I enjoyed watching this awesome run!!! I ran a 4:13 mile in the first leg of a 4 mile relay. We when through in 2:10 for 880 and then I took off and ran a 2:03 for the second two laps and it felt like I was sprinting.
It will happen one day. for sure. Also sub 1:40 800m. Sub 40 400m, etc... Sub 2 hours marathon almost happened. It was a project. not a race. Eliud Kipchoge ran 2:00:25, with pacemakers changeing after every 3 kilometres
The current 1500-10,000 men's records were set in the EPO era, so the answer to your question is "almost certainly not in our lifetime". I think the women's records are suspect too, seeing as how they beat records run by Chinese athletes that were themselves considered suspect at the time.
In many ways it's quite sad. For 1 month, July, 2007, Alan Webb was at the peak of his running career. He won 2 races in Europe (this being one of them) and then never reached this height again nor won any other International races. The following year he didn't even make the USA Olympic team at 1500m for 2008 Olympics. So, for him, this was his Everest. Well done Alan.
I ran a 10:41 mile yesterday and I was probably exhausted as he was. But I'm 250lbs and 54 years old, so I'm only 5:11 mins off of my PR of 5:29 at age 20 and 160 pounds.
Adam Reed that’s a bit harsh of you to say. Maybe he’s just inspired by Alan Webb’s performance, and wanted to share some of his goals on this video. Would that be so bad? No need to criticize people you don’t even know so harshly over the internet.
@From the Futon sweetheart you're the one sitting on a futon. Winners don't own futons. I don't need to share my accolades on a YT channel for my self esteem either, that's for people like you. Do you by chance have a man bun? #mendontownfutons
I grew up with the mile being the focus for middle distance races and this is one of the last times the mile was a focus. Seems runners are not focusing on the mile world record. oh well. I know there are multiple reasons that the 1500 is so important now. I was born in 1952, and Elliott, Snell, Ryun, Walkier, Coe, Ovett, etc are left on a shelf somewhere. It is like other sports such as MLB, older fans see the sport taking away our joy with the changes.
Webb was not a flamboyant kind of athlete, which seems to be what American public likes. Also, the mile is losing its luster to the 1500. I am sure that middle distance fans will find the history of the mile on youtube eventually. Just imagine if this race had been at the Crystal Palace. Maybe Webb would have found a little more in the tank.
I was a distance runner when I was a teenager, and I'm 49 now. I want to run in small meets like this and try to break national records. Where are these things?
Great run. To think that Steve Cram ran 3:34.3 22 years earlier. Shows the class he was in. Sorry, I am British. I think Steve Cram still holds the European mile record. I suppose Cram would have broken the world record today, if he was 25 now.
I thought i was the shit when i ran the mile in 6:40 breaking my highschool record, then i was pissed when i learned we were the only continuation school with a track & field program and now this! no wonder am old & fat & shit
Nope. Funny thing is, if he runs too fast that he collapses at the end of the line, it would mean that he runs at a faster pace that he will blow up in the last few hundred meters and ultimately finishes way slower... Go check all the WR races of all track's mid/long distances. In none of them, the winner collapsed at the end. For a WR performance, a runner finishes strong.
@From the Futon Ask anyone in the general population the question, "Who is Alan Webb", and I can almost assure even guarantee you, that they will look at you like you are crazy. This is the most likely response, "Alan Webb?? Is this some kind of Joke?" Just sayin. You might even hear the same response from the running community unless they are a die-hard track and field fan. Enough for you?
@From the Futon Worthwhile? Are you kiddin me? There are thousands of people that run sub 4 minute miles each year. Even High school boys run sub 4 minute miles. If Webb earned an Olympic medal, then now we are talking. So what medal did Webb Earn? I thought so.
@From the Futon Alan Webb a great American disappointment. The sad truth of American sports is that people will remember Lance Armstrong. Alan Webb who?
@From the Futon Now I didn't know he way gay. And that is not my topic of expertise. I like beautiful women. He being gay comes as a big surprise to me. Another miss I suppose.

That's nothing to be sniffed at. You woulda beat Franko Wanco for second last in the 1896 Greek Olympics.
