I'd not be surprised, enron is exactly what I thought about when this story started cropping up. Disney has to maintain it's image as a juggernaut that can seemingly make no financial mistakes. It would not surprise me in the slightest if they are fudging their numbers in various ways. With the way they have expanded into a media titan, the revenue needed to keep that gravy train going must be quite mind blowing. If they are indeed being a bit shady, it won't be long before it gets out. There is always gonna be a mistreated employee or just someone near the company with an axe to grind, or even just someone who makes just enough of a mistake to get the snowball rolling downhill. I'll be eagerly watching with popcorn in hand, Disney needs to be knocked down a peg. I don't hold any particular ill will against them, but a reduced presence from them in the media arena would be good for the entertainment industry as a whole.
I know movie theaters would breathe a little easier, what with having to pay disney 70 cents on the dollar per ticket sold just to show their films. It's not like they can refuse to show the films if they want to stay in business, and almost every fricken thing that comes out these days has Disney's fingerprints on it.

Disney bought up loads of tickets in cinemas. this did not bother them as they just gave the tickets to charity groups and could claim them back on tax so it cost them nothing. thats why you get loads of theatres empty on web. it was a complete fail. but Disney got their pr ops do the shit, alita was a much better movie. yet Disney went out of there way to shit on it. also why has seth mcfarleine now moved the orville away from disney and gone to hula? i suggest Disney is dispersing up its own ass and no real creative person wants anything to do with the woke bullshit. i want to watch real scifi not woke shit

I remember when it came out, "Avatar" was as big as "Titanic" was in 1997, people wouldn't shut up about it. Of course this was entirely due to "Avatar's" 3D spectacle, since the story was crap. The hype was definitely real for "Avatar", because even "normies" (non-nerds) saw it 2 or 3 times. Once it left theaters, the hype died down quickly, and it's only in hindsight that we question its popularity, because it hasn't been popular since (lol).

Disney can very well go from King of entertainment to the king of ashes! It would be both sad and hilarious if they spent all this effort and time to own it all. And is worth nothing. A quote that would be fitting for a lich King. You can be king of all the world. but the world must die!! For the living and free are tyrants.. and doom the Earth. And if it happens. Disney would not just destroyed themselves. Warner Brothers. Sony. Columbia pictures. And so many others will die! And from the ashes Independence creators will slowly grow. I'm personally not on board with this inflated tickets theory it just seems a bit too wild. Disney/Marvel went fucking bonkers with marketing for Captain Marvel - my 10 year old son who never asks to go to movies was desperate to see it because of the marketing and the peer pressure from his friends who were all going to see it. From my own small window on the world it was successful not because it was good, but because it had a massive marketing budget and people are sheep. I don't know what Disney are reporting the marketing budget to be, but to me it appeared to get more exposure than Endgame did, so it wouldn't surprise me if the marketing bill was higher than Endgames.

@@christiancinnabars1402 Yeah I'm skeptical about those reports too - no real evidence there just claims. The screening I took my son to was a week after is opened, on a Tuesday night - it wasn't anywhere near full but it was a lot busier than you'd normally see for most films at that theatre on a week night - of course that's just an anecdote so not evidence either.
I suspect it really did take in a bunch of box-office receipts - but I also suspect the marketing budget was higher than the production budget, maybe $200,000,000 or more? Possibly making it one of the least profitable Marvel films despite the massive reported takings - Disney marketed the crap out of it because they knew it had to be super-hyped due to the coming Marvel character apocalypse as all the old leads leave the franchise & are replaced with newer woker versions.

"Aladdin" (2019) at least had morbid curiosity going for it, after the weird-ass blue Will Smith genie photo dropped. And "Captain Marvel" _was_ an MCU film, after all, positioned between two "Avengers" films, so I could see people going to see that, even if they were duped into doing so. At a stretch, I could buy them _maybe_ making a billion each _eventually_ during their theater runs. But "The Lion King"? That's the smoking gun. It looked dull and unappealing, there was zero audience interest in it, it got bad reviews, everything about it screamed "flop!" and yet _somehow_ it made _a billion dollars?_ Definitely something fishy there.

Just from the caption, an Eddie Izzard-ish "NO, SURELY NOT!" Disney? That unshakable bastion, that foundational gleaming pillar of ethics and fair business practices, the stalwart guardian of righteousness and value, the living example of excellence to which all American businesses futilely aspire - do you mean to say they engaged in *dishonest accounting practices*? Hand to my forehead, I am shocked. SHOCKED.

It's VERY possible Disney pre-purchased tickets. Once upon a time in the music business, when people were actually buying albums, labels would buy the first 500k-1million for certain artists to make it look like a hit. No reason why it would be different in the movie business.

i'm from Australia and I sat in a 250+ seat cinema during the second week screening by my self. I know the manager of the cinema complex and she told me it was costing them money by not selling food and having to show it in their largest cinema.
She was happy to see someone buying popcorn and a drink.
I didn't pay for the ticket it was a freebie with my cinema membership, I still think i payed too much.

Disney padding box office results for Captain Marvel is the only way that it could save executive face regarding the PR and release debacle surrounding that poorly recieved addition to the MCU. The movie's actuals revealed by CFO Christine McCarthy comptroller sumarized the gross world wide ticket sales at $600 million with an amortized cost of just over $700 million including an additional $300 million for miscellaneous marketing.
Also the proposed re- release of Endgame with the additional 20 plus minutes of Captain Marvel featured footage was tabled as it might draw more attention to the previous fraud.

The 3D in Avatar was 3D done right and completely different to any 3D movies that had come before. Like Star Wars it was the right movie at the right time and was an experience. One that the audience had to share with family and friends.

Well with interest rates still very low. Disney was probably doing their own version of stock buy backs. Instead of stocks, they may have been buying tickets to theaters. THAT'S IF those reports you read are indeed true.

  • @Beer_Dad1975

Yeah, timing is everything here - it'll be so they can over-value shares used as payments for buy-outs like Marvel - where they are paying x-amount in cash and y-amount in shares, they can artificially inflate the share values and so pay less cash. Disney aren't the first to do this, they aren't even the first to be caught doing this, and they won't be the last.

May not be a "directed" conspiracy, but a large group of people inflating the figures to make their Disney stock go up and get bigger bonuses is within the realm of possibility. The inflated box office numbers had definite high level direction.

Sounds to me like someone who was fired for doing their job.
I had friends at Disney and the things they me was disgusting, two were princesses and they told me several times up till they were fired
they were told to sleep with certain guests and when they reported it Disney did a "investigation", and found the report to be false.
But they were not fired, nor were charges ever made against my friends.
And what normally happens is the police do a investigation and when it is a false accusation the polices file a charge against the person to
    appear in court.
Nothing like that happened, the police were never involved in the "investigation".
Then I had another friend who was also a Disney princess who was fired that told me the exact same thing and she was hired AFTER my other friend
had left Florida so she never even meet her.
Then there was my friend who was a artist the things he told me were horrible, like Disney considers that if you are a artist working for them that even
if you draw or paint on your own time they own the art work.
Disney is defiantly a company that should be investigated for both their revenue and how they treat their employees.

DeadFishFactory I personally thought the movie was atrocious. I saw a 30 second trailer, wrote down exactly what would occur in the movie and made some bets with friends and family. Much money was made that day.
The visuals? Good, but bad. Story? Bad and horribly telegraphed. Ah well, it was entertaining to the kids so I guess it did what it was supposed to.
