I need time to learn how to make my own clothes and even then i still need blueprints for clothes (which are expensive) and in the end when i make it what if I don't like how it fits me
Clothes are an excellent expression of our own style, but we must make sure that the style we are portraying actually comes from within us, and not from a marketing ad, which is telling us that we need this piece of clothing to feel good our accepted.
Yes I am a stylist and can go on and on about dressing for yourself. Clothes are tool and extension of your personality and value. That's why we love Audrey Hepburn so much she's an example of that she is what she present herself to be.
this is very true!!i think in terms of fashion, we need to understand who we are, how our bodies are like, to choose our right fits. clothes can defo present our very own accent and personalities!
I couldn't agree more. Lots of people claim they "don't care how they look" or that they just "wear whatever they want." But in actuality, this couldn't be further from the truth. They aren't walking around naked, or in a burlap sack; their fashion choices are very much deliberate and meaningful. If you're a jeans and t-shirt guy, you're messaging with that outfit. When you say you "just wear what's comfortable" you're not being honest with yourself - a toga is comfortable. You just wear what's practical? Why not a jumpsuit? Choosing not to put a lot of thought into what you wear is a choice itself, with it's own implications. It generally means going with whatever your culture says is normal, messaging that you're down to earth and broadcasting a message of commonality with your fellows. Wearing casual clothes signals humility. Wearing shabby clothes signals a disinterest in social status and worldly concerns, implying a focus on other things.
digitalbrentable exactly. Of course there are peopls who put in more thought. But it would be a lie that they don't care at all. Noone would go in stained old clothes to a job interview. And i havent met someone who doesn't find sweatpants or something similar more comfortable than jeans, yet they would not wear it outside. Many women walk around at home without a bra on, because its so much more comfortable, but wouldn't do it outside. Also the guys who just wear a shirt and jeans, cause its comfortable wouldn't wear ridiculous looking clothes just because they are comfortable. Or would wear bright pink jeans even if they were the most comfortable
or shows insecurity and or depression. really, there's so many subconscious reasons going on behind our clothing choices . I just see no reason why either dressing well or not should be ridiculed, both views are extreme. I see a lot of people equating dressing well with low intelligence and I honestly object.
I think I liked this video because it's given me a better insight into something that is pretty common to us all, but that I often get teased for. I generally dress flamboyantly and outlandishly, and I've never really understood why. Contrary to the dismissive 'attention seeking' explanation, which never really struck home, the explanation offered in this video really resonates: dressing strangely is a statement of identity, a message to others that I'm an unusual chap (or, perhaps, that I want them to think so). Anyway, a nice bonus is I now have a proper answer when I'm challenged on my peculiar attire; I can just admit it as a form of social messaging, same as the clothes worn by the person asking.
I think that just shows your'e confident enough to show the world your personality and taste. that's a cool thing. it's better than being pressured by society and being another boring person wearing basics everyday and having no creative sense.
7malmusk ignorant? Assuming that I'm an ignorant person judging by my single comment and my dislike towards the channel is the actual ignorance. You can't label people like that. However I, actually listened what they were saying and couldn't agree. This channel has become unimportant for me and I stated my opinion in this comments section. Ignorant people are dangerous but people who think of themselves as knowledgeable and are actually ignorant are way more dangerous.
Choosing what to wear was such a pain for me when I grew up. I hated all the different choices of colors and how they work together or not. Or thinking about when was the last time I wore this or that. I then started to wear only black clothes and it was such a relief for me not to think about what to wear every morning.
NamelessSalt It disappeared when I looked to see what you were talking about. I just refreshed my notifications and there was the notification that you must be talking about - with a site and LOTS of emojis!! Hopefully RUclips has removed it - I still can't see it.
I have started buying only second hand clothes some months ago. I think these clothes match better to my grunge alternative style and people / animals / the environment doesn't suffer.
that's really cool! you can be just as fashionable even without buying new clothes and i really admire you for doing this. I'm trying to sew my closet myself as much as possible... ^^"
I hate fashion. If everyone would wear same clothes it would make life easier. People would be much more secured about their own appearance, no environmental damage and no money spend. Sounds great for me.
u forgot to mention that its not all about the clothes , its about how people wear them, posture is a big part of fashion that gets overlooked, u can pick a person the perfect outfit, it wont fit him until he wears it with pride
depends. it depend if you want to look "cool" and "stylish" or to get people to like you, or if you want to see yourself in your clothing, all the while looking good, or not.
Yep you should be - unfortunately the world is assessing your wealth, discipline, self image, success, confidence every time you walk out the door - it's an unfair world. Putting yourself together is a basic life skill. If you don't know what you are doing you are not creating the 'like' effect in your audience. We admire and respect people who are well turned out. Clothes have language whether you like it or not.
say66HELLO I think the point is to wear what you like and be proud of who you are, then you attract the people who might share the same interests due to the appreciation of your style. Everybody gets judged, but at the same time everybody also judges. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, just a way to determine who you want to spend your time with. So don't feel self conscious, I'm sure your choice of wardrobe suits you well because it was picked by you. :)
The point of the video is to say that you should indeed waste your time and money for no real self satisfaction. That you should also be consumed by other people's interpretation of your choice of clothing.
As a 6'2'' male with a shaved head, beard and a large, muscular physique (due to over 4 years of bodybuilding), people would assume me to be brutish, intimidating and quite simple. While this is certainly an aspect of my personality, I also happen to be be a very joyful, sarcastic and open individual. I therefore like to convey that by dressing in tops too large for me and wearing skin-tight jeans cuffed up comically high in order to show off my collection of colourfully silly socks. I love this video.
Our clothing choices reflect not only our currect self but what we strive to be, a mixture of traits that are congruent to the current self yet foreshadow our development and progress as human being . How can u show how elevated and above the frail you're ,how your mere existence on the physical plane is nothing more then a role of self-amusement in just a few piece of clothing .One must choose very wisely as such an issue is of grand importance of our selfimage and legacy.
thank you for putting it so well!! it's not about being vain, it's about controlling other people's immediate perceptions and sculpting our own identity
A good indicator is the extent to which a person rejects socially accepted fashion. A teenager wearing exclusively Nike or Adidas, to me suggests conformity, and a sense of self consciousness and/or fear of not fitting in. We see this in all age groups; it's generational adherence. Those who reject this are the ones most comfortable with their own bodies and minds.
I have a pretty conventional style, but I’m very comfortable with myself. However I also don’t follow trends or anything unless I genuinely like it myself.
this channel is such a refuge. When my thoughts are too loud, the intelligence and brilliance and thoughtfulness of these videos always calms the mind down. And although each video leads us further into questions, I think we all just feel so much more understood. thank you school of life, for being a friend.
This is amazing, I never thought of clothes this way, and it makes so much sense now! Now I get why I am so nervous about clothes, especially on the first day of a particular school, meeting a personal music teacher for the first time, performing in a casually dressed performance (which means more options, more terror), and things like that while I dress like a peasant at home. My family doesn't care about how my hair is, or if I'm wearing the sweater I've worn for a week straight, or if I put on tight pants to make my legs more skinny-looking. They don't care, and then I don't care. It makes so much sense now, this is great!
I'm not confident enough to wear the style I like :/ I always find myself thinking when I lose weight I'm gonna wear that, haha but it's a long process
SAME. Every time I'm like wow that's a really cute _____!... but it would look bad on me, so I'll buy it when I lose weight (or what if I buy it, lose weight, then it doesn't fit anymore). What I wear is not even close to the style I love.
Im really thin but I love oversized clothes so yep I got judged for that because I dont show off my body..sick people I just wanted to go unnoticed like a phantom or something 😂
I LOVE THIS!!! in the past six months of so ive realized how happy choosing my outfits makes me. Sometimes people say that i look rather odd, because of how much i like thrift shopping and playing with makeup, but it's fun, it makes me feel creative. I love it.
As much as I love this video, it's important to remember that brands don't matter if you think they don't, and that anything you wear looks great *_if you think it does_*. Clothes are a great way to share yourself, but they're not the only way.
I AM ADDICTED TO THE SCHOOL OF LIFE. I love it. All of it. The Curriculum and all the other films. Since discovering you guys I have become a daily listener. As a writer, I've found the animations and the films and subjects so brilliant and often give me prompts for my writing. THANK YOU
Excellent commentary. How one dresses could be called "personal marketing". My wife & I talk a fair bit about that. She's even writing a thesis about it. -A
i get your point, but IMO this message isn't something that should be emphasised. The fashion industry is out of control. Western nations already waste so much money on clothes - we over consume (often not even wearing everything we buy) due to cultural pressure driven by fast fashion companies at such environmental and ethical cost - and we are none the happier for it. Would it be so wrong if we all wore a uniform and judged each other on the contents of our character instead?
there's def should be more awareness for the damage we do the earth. I think people can be fashionable and express themselves while consuming less. it's just a matter of putting more thought into it. sadly people are not aware and are uninterested. as long as some poor 3rd-world countries will produce the clothes dirt cheap, people would buy them cheaply and won't care about the meaning behind the cheap price tag. in a sense, it might be better to buy a few expensive outfits which are made ethically than a ton of cheap clothes...
Judging people on the content of their character is great, but it takes a lot of time while clothes give you an overview of who the person is, or at least want to be seen as
And if you want ethical cheap clothes you can always go to trift shops, I get most of my clothes there and I often find great clothes amongst the meh clothes, it feels like treasure hunting
Chet Kroon: That sounds nightmarish. I love putting together an outfit and altering my clothes to make them represent myself more. You have no creativity...
I love thrift shopping and wearing vintage Tees or vintage things from the 90’s. I’m short and some of these things make me look even shorter and don’t compliment my height, but I feel happy with what I wear.
I've only ever worn, plain tee's/graphic tee's , track pants/jeans, trainers/skateshoes, generally black, I hadn't put much thought into it throughout my life, but this video got me thinking what it says about me... hmm
Don't worry. Clothes and first impressions are shit. I literally know tons of people who don't give two hoots about what they look like but are the most interesting people I've ever met.
Why Mirrors Matter Hey guys As I was watching this video with my fellow student of life, we started digging a little deeper. Talking about the impact of seeing your reflection during a certain activity we hypothesized that this might have a stimulating effect on our self-image. Imagine playing the guitar or working on an essay and glancing in the mirror. Suddenly you have gained the perspective of an outsider. Might this create a clearer picture of who you are? Love from Antwerp Marius & Thomas
thank you for helping me understand why even getting dressed can cause me anxiety. no one else with anxiety I've spoken to has had the same experience and I thought I was just being ridiculous. now I understand myself better
I stopped caring about what I should wear in my late 20s when it got too tiresome to sift through various combinations of colors and patters. A couple more years and i'll be the guy in the bath robe haunting the local supermarkets
I completely agree that others judge us imperfectly based on the clothes we wear. On my channel, I've posted videos relating to how clothing affects interpersonal communication and I think it ties in perfectly with what you mention here about fashion choices being a meaningful exercise. In my own experience, I've seen how others have viewed me as snobbish or spoiled based on where I come from and what that enabled me to wear. It's a sad reality but one that can be easily fixed through awareness of these things. Great video!
One of the many best things I have done was learn how to dress. Learn the difference between style and fashion. As Yves Saint Laurent said " Fashions fade, style is eternal". Once you learn to dress with style you will be amazed at how many compliments you receive and even on how much better service you get when you go out, not to mention the extra amount of attention you get from the ladies. It's an easy thing to learn that pays big rewards and it's also fun. They amount of men you see walking around that dress like absolute slops is really sad. Even poor people in the 30's and 40's dressed very elegant.
it depends if your conception of style aligns with what the general population thinks is stylish. A tailored suit for example is stylish if you ask 99% of people, while I might think a weird looking avant garde japanese outfit is, and other people don't. i agree with the quote you wrote, but the rest doesn't apply to every other form of style.
Every School of Life video is a clinic in how to put together a great short-format video. The animation is engaging yet still always supports the writing in a way that allows it to say more. Required watching for anyone who wants to tell compelling stories with motion graphics and voiceover. Keep up the great work!
I shop at thrift shops and sometimes only at thrift shops and discount stores if they have special days like $1 clothing or half off tagged items. It takes patience on my part but so far I've replaced 80% of my old teenage wardrobe with clothes I'm proud to see myself in now which is more androgynous. I have always been aware of how I'm percieved in my clothing because I saw forst hand how my family were treated. My sister wore revealing clothing at a young age, had an eye for high fashion but stuck to things like Baby phat and G unit. She would get treated differently than I would. My grandma would dress me and tell me "I need to dress you like the Americanos so you can go far. You'll thank me one day." I didn't understand at the time but what she meant was that she was purposely dressing me to not look my culture. While other kids in my neighborhood wore tight apple bottom jeans, bandanas, crop tops, spaghetti string tops, things with hispanic flags printed on them with jordans, I was wearing Gap jeans, pastel button downs, and sketchers. I got into many summer activities and felt like an odd one out because no one else was like me. Now that I've grown up a bit, my style means alot. An interview, we dress to impress. A date is the same way. But my style isnt to hide who I am anymore. It's to embrace it.
Clothes don't matter to my husband. T shirts and jeans is enough as long as he doesn't need to waste too much mental energy in covering up for society. After 15 years of marriage, I'm finally delving into how much technical knowledge is in his mind and I'm awe inspired by it. I love his self confidence in knowing who he is and what his priorities are. He'd much rather let what he does speak for himself. He did get an expensive Rolex from Tourneau in NYC a while ago because he values functionality and something well made. Walked into the shop with holes in his t-shirt and jeans... and flip flops. Service people there were very courteous and sold him a watch. If they were judgey, they'd lose out on a sale... their lost. I have came to organize his outfits with days of the week hanger to make sure he wears clean clothes every day... hygienes matter... but they are always neutral colored shirts and khakis for work and jeans for home. We are happy with our lives and attracts only genuine people because we don't want to waste energy and resources on those who don't matter. I admire so much about my husband and won't change a thing.
I have a clothes hamper full of shorts and t-shirts and the 3 things I put any thought into are what design I want to wear on that t-shirt, how comfortable the shorts are, and making sure they aren't the same color, but I only do that last one because of my mom.
"You are what you wear" is a school of old thought. I know many people who close from head to toe and have horrible attitude and the other way round. Apparels are a choice not an indicator of our character.
@@zippy3253 it is not. However we may behave a certain way if we dress a certain way. Clothes, fabric and colour can impact us (emocionally/mentally/physically). But clothes are a form of communication. A great one at that!! I'm a piano player, my style /my true style is Rock/romantic goth, however when i had to teach music to little children, i had to adapt my clothing choices. Most of the people who i work with has no idea of my "true to heart" style. I'm a very eclectic reader: classics (greeks: Plato, Omer, etc.etc.), medicine, pathology, sci-fi, romances, psychology, steampunk, herbalism, gardening, cooking, BD/ comics, XVII/XVIII literature and whatnot. Oh,i'm currently finnishing my masters degree in clinical psychology. So... My tailored pants and white shirt dont say anything about me when i'm teaching. Anything about my tastes, what i do with my "free time", or where do i came from. That goes for ALOT of people. And yes, K.A. Sharmella is right!! its not a character indicater. However, fashion can help you express yourself (if you can do it), in personal marketing, or in building your own personal brand (because they influence how people perceive you, even if they know you already) ;)
Good video. Very insightful, but one thing that seems to be missing from these types of videos is a discussion on the why. Why do certain items mean certain things and is that really necessary. Who decides? It is easy to point out how it is wrong to judge others based on how they dress, but what is often missed is the fact that we use the same kinds of judgments in making choices for ourselves (seriousness, modesty, gender roles, status, etc.). The part on the artist's choice of painting himself kind of touches on this. That choice, however, can be easily dismissed as an artist being a quirky, eccentric artist. The big question remains: How should we dress, and why?
i hate when people judge cause my clothes aren't from a recognized store or something...... i just want something i fell comfortable i dont care about where it come fron or who nade it...
as long as you have your own style that you like I don't think brands matter. no one impresses me by just following trends and buying whats in store. I'd be impressed thought of a cool color combo, a diffrent way of an item being worn or just some cool pattern or cut of the clothing. I honestly don't care about the price tag.
But you still would reject some clothing items even if they were the most comfortable and practical on the planet. If you are guy and you find bright pink pants that are the most comfortable and water resistant and just overall super pants, would you wear them? I don't think so. But yeah i do think we judge people to much of their clothes. But claiming we don't care at all is a lie
"Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy." _-Albert Einstein_ Ever since I first heard that, I've had the same simple and somewhat fitting clothing as my wardobe.
It's good to see people who have made an effort with their appearance . They don't have to wear anything expensive of particularly bold but it shows they have some pride in themselves and can reflect individuality. They are more at one with themselves.
I love this video! It is soo amazing to see this topic being discussed. I am studying Fashion Design and one of the main topic discussions we talk about is how we are so conditioned to seeing clothing as superficial and meaningless. When on the contrary, it is one of the greatest mediums to communicate our beliefs like providing care, tenderness and self-expression. Like it was said, "acting like artist painting a self-portrait ". Our clothing provide a visual of our habitual practice. I find not many people see the beauty of its craft and valuable deeper history because of how often mainstream media presents it. So, seeing this video makes me super happy :)!
Love this video, couldn't agree more! I hope others express themselves through their clothes too but remember you are more than just your clothes, your clothes don't make you, you make your clothes!
But what happens when someone doesn't value clothes at all? When they only care about a person's actions, and not their appearance? I don't care what I wear. As long as it's comfortable and covers all the important areas, I don't care what it looks like.
This video needs to talk about the effect of colours in clothing too, and how different colours affect not only the people viewing them, but the wearer themselves. Red projects confidence and assertiveness, blue is calming and thoughtful, black is neutral, white is clean and fresh, etc. I have found since changing my wardrobe from boring old grey and black t shirts that I am more confident and happier in what I wear
You don't understand the importance of genuine leather. It's not about how it looks or feels. If that was the case, golden jewelery could be made out of endless other substitutes that would resemble gold almost perfectly. The value is not in the outward appearance but the inward feeling it gives. Somewhere in the deep subconsciousness of you mind, an instinctual craving is nourished. In all humans there is a pleasure that comes from inflicting pain. The price to obtain, and difficulty required to obtain an object only further our contentment with that object. In conclusion we enjoy when our pleasure comes at the cost of anothers suffering, whether we like it or not. It is instinctual. We love to hunt, to kill.
@@quantumleap4023 A simple Jean and a t-shirt does the job. I like sol's videos but this was pure bs. What matters is what you do wearing those clothes and how comfortable you are while doing it. A leather jacket won't make you solve a calculus problem faster .smh.
Quantum Leap You’re fucking wild. People like leather because it’s good quality and most forget that an animal was killed to get that leather item. Nobody buys it to bring them satisfaction that an animal was killed to Make that item. That’s just you, bud
I do not understand people who want to keep everything simple. I want everything to look nice. I find this a logical thing to do. People often say things are beautiful when they see them on pictures, photos and movies. Yet in reality they never do anything to make their surrounding to look like a picture.
I live in a college town and I always see countless copycat people. Everyone here seems to have this hardcore conformity going on, the girls all wear the same crap (sometimes literally side by side or in groups, like the same outfit or just variations of the same outfit) and guys here, same thing, brand-name t-shirts, khaki shorts & pants. For shoes (guys & girls) it's all converse shoes or Adidas shoes (those ones with the 3 black stripes) - EVERYONE here wears one or the other (not me).My obvious gripe is that it doesn't reveal much about individuals if they're all wearing the same crap, other than the crap they're wearing is usually expensive and i guess makes them all vague consumerist, capitalist, type people. Eh? But mostly douchey basic guys & basic bitchy girls. It's quite sad in a sort of existential way. In fact, my own coworkers have remarked out I stand out so much here because I for example wear unique things like green-colored jeans or a black corduroy coat or just stuff like that. My shoes are not Converse or Adidas either, The thing is I'm not trying to stand out, everyone is so similar here, that a pair of boots or a blank colored t-shit or a sweater even, just blows their minds.
Video Insights I’m from a small town/City in Mexico and everyone dresses like you said, all the rich kids (boys or girls) wear skinny jeans and show the ankle, those horrible white shoes (converse or adidas) and a plain shirt or t-shirt. But in Mexico we have fun names for them haha, we call them “buchones, paps, mirreyes” etc, they’re basically the rich kids who only care about traveling, parties and dating or they are the sons of drug lords.
I can see your point here, and very much agree about a lot of people following trends....but, objectively, we have to consider that perhaps some people may just like to dance to the beat everyone else is dancing to, not because they're forced. And, for the same reason, some might enjoy taking part in fashion trends as if they're seasons or chapters. They may not feel a need to express individuality so strongly through their clothing. Or maybe they're using clothing as their 'badge', as a way to project how they want to be seen (even if it is incongruous with who they actually seem to be). Or, yes, they may be just following the pack because of insecurities and social dynamics. One can't know when it comes to every person. And that's the thing - by passing judgment based on visuals alone, you too are falling in the trap of believing that you understand the person - their intention or their 'weakness' to influences - from only their clothing style. Simply by noticing them, affecting you in any way (by causing an opinion to form)...it betrays a heightened awareness in your own projection; an insecurity. It's a human thing though, to have these insecurities. We all do, to a point, about many thing. But we have to accept ourselves first - and only then we can accept others (including their perceived 'flaws' or what we may perceive to be 'lessor' traits).
@@timgeoghegan7458 interesting response. My experience is that the ones that "choose" to wear a "uniform" ( I mean totally go with the flow to blend in), are often more judgemental, hostile and threatened by the "nonconformists". Their "currency" is to evaluate by an external "price tag" and you see the "bar codes being scanned" and a reassuring "ka-ching" of the price register and comfort that they feel that you are in the "right price bracket", and relief that you don't have "more" than them. Being non conformist and denying them bar codes to scan gets them hyper and uncomfortable at being unable to qualify and quantify. Sad.
Wow! This is why a Bpder in my life gets very anxious and "splits" with any delays clothes shopping, or any deviation from her "perfect" fashion choice. I cottoned on a delay was not helpful, now I know more. Every little helps. Thanks
This is both true and bullshit at the same time. "You are what you consume" should not be normalized. This is not something to be proud of. What this video could have concluded is that much is lost in this desperate struggle to "look ourselves" and that it's not worth the fight, instead of catering to the tendency to judge people by their appearances.
Why does wearing tee shirts and hoodies makes me less of a woman ? It seems like every person I meet thinks that I'm a tomboy or a lesbian, but I'm straight, I just don't understand the concept of being "sexy" and wearing things to appeal or appease other people like men ... I just wear what I like, even if it seems misgendered ...
What's worse is when a professor calls you out, saying. "I think that pink blue sweater is burning my eyes. Find something to wear," as an "example" of not taking things personally. And the whole class went quiet. Luckily one of my classmates stood up that he felt personally attack by the way our professor was demonstrating. 🤷
Most of the wealthiest and most successful people I've met dress like homeless bums. What does that mean? They have no need to impress you with fancy clothes.
jjmarz1001 Absolutely right. The wealthiest of wealthy always dress like this. You'd never know in a million years they were wealthy and usually they don't want you to know, as they don't make a point of showing off.
jjmarz1001 so they also make a statement with their clothes: "i am so rich and influencal i don't need to impress you with my clothes" . There's no escape😂😂
Rafaela Scheiwiller I've known extremely wealthy people that dress very sloppy, similar to bums and have been made fun of for it in the street. Not all wealthy people dressing this way are happy people nor are they thinking about whether they're impressing people or not. Ah, the complexities of life. :)
So true!! I meet women all the time who look like they haven't showered in weeks but they pull out a black card to buy their stuff. You cannot judge a book by the cover.
fashion absolutely overwhelms me and stresses me out. i feel like that i have to have my own style but still follow the trends. when i wear my unique pieces of clothing i feel confident but sometimes I feel like I have too many of those pieces and i feel left behind when i don't follow the trends (which some of them i do like by the way). and i feel like i am lacking something and feeling insufficient in my wardrobe when i don't have these trendy pieces and i feel like i always end up spending too much money on clothes because i purchase the trendy pieces when I already have plenty in my closet. even though i know that i have more than enough, i still feel like i am not 'pretty' enough or 'cool enough' when i don't have a particular item that is in style (e.g. a pair of duck boots or something of a certain color -- i have a bit of an obsession of rose gold and i own nothing of that color because i was obsessed with gray a few months ago). i feel that my wardrobe is incomplete, that i am incomplete. i have pretty high standards for myself and it is hard for me to keep up with and meet my goal of being fashionable and aesthetically pleasing while still having my own twist in my style.
Does that mean, that the younger generation which has started to wear very similar clothes all in all is trying to disguise their lack of self-being, because they are not particularly good at anything, or at least they think so/ havent discovered it yet. Lets discuss that...
now if only i had the budget for my fashion sense

Rowan McMullan Now if I only had the body for my fashion sense.

EazyLate hi
Clothes are an excellent expression of our own style, but we must make sure that the style we are portraying actually comes from within us, and not from a marketing ad, which is telling us that we need this piece of clothing to feel good our accepted.
110%!
Yes I am a stylist and can go on and on about dressing for yourself. Clothes are tool and extension of your personality and value. That's why we love Audrey Hepburn so much she's an example of that she is what she present herself to be.
But even in this way (buying clothes only because they are in the fashion spotlight) says a lot about the person too.
Well what is marketing and what is your style? You got your inspiration from somewhere.
this is very true!!i think in terms of fashion, we need to understand who we are, how our bodies are like, to choose our right fits. clothes can defo present our very own accent and personalities!
Do you have any idea how hard it is for me to find a burlap sack that fits?
Choosing among clothes got so complicated that now I just wear a thong and body glitter.
David Maxfield must be quite cold in the winter.
Why not just glitter?
Lol
Ah, a gentlemen of class.
I think you're winning at life with those choices
This channel is very important
Jordan King agreed it talks about stuff that everyone wants to ignore
Jordan King not after promoting adultery
hahahhaa adultery doesnt need to be promoted ... it happens no matter how ambitiously its being avoided. xD
ignorant people wont like the channel :)
SunlessDawn My thoughts exactly. Life is so much easier when all of our clothes are black! Your username is very fitting too btw, I like it! :)
aww I love color XD
I'm trying to reduce black from my closet as much as possible.
well everyone to their own I guess.
I love colors too. But I don't like to wear them ;)
NamelessSalt It disappeared when I looked to see what you were talking about. I just refreshed my notifications and there was the notification that you must be talking about - with a site and LOTS of emojis!! Hopefully RUclips has removed it - I still can't see it.
SunlessDawn true all black is best in my opinion
I have started buying only second hand clothes some months ago. I think these clothes match better to my grunge alternative style and people / animals / the environment doesn't suffer.
Alex Kryptonite how does the environment suffer from buying new clothes?
that's really cool!
you can be just as fashionable even without buying new clothes and i really admire you for doing this.
I'm trying to sew my closet myself as much as possible... ^^"
princeasle damn.... I didn't know that
I hate fashion. If everyone would wear same clothes it would make life easier. People would be much more secured about their own appearance, no environmental damage and no money spend. Sounds great for me.
Valeri Ševtšenko
that would also make us all extremely boring.
as long as people have any sort of ego, they are gonna try to be different.
u forgot to mention that its not all about the clothes , its about how people wear them, posture is a big part of fashion that gets overlooked, u can pick a person the perfect outfit, it wont fit him until he wears it with pride
"Our wardrobes contain some of our most carefully written lines of our autobiography."
Beautiful.
Clothes are not who we are, they're who we want to be.
Not always, only when you have the confidence and economy I'd say.
no, clothes reflect who we are
@@engr.enciso not really though
@@munchen7986 then what do you think? 😊
depends.
it depend if you want to look "cool" and "stylish" or to get people to like you, or if you want to see yourself in your clothing, all the while looking good, or not.
Crap, now I'm self-conscious about my clothes...
Don't be. You are already naturally wearing who you are. However also don't be afraid to change now that you know that you can.
Lynne Pearce ...so your point is that i have to make other people like me because of my look?
say66HELLO I think the point is to wear what you like and be proud of who you are, then you attract the people who might share the same interests due to the appreciation of your style.
I have the impression that a lot of people dismiss opinions that come from people who dress in a different and radical way. That pisses me off...
My favourite is "how can you take someone seriously if they have red hair?"
RYBATUGA I tend to think that this is much more telling of the individual who possesses this tendency.
RYBATUGA human sadness :)
RYBATUGA indeed
Reinaldo Mancero Amazing song from an amazing album :)

subject to availability though.

You sound amazing
Be my friend
Luc I would love to see photograph of you that description was great 😍
I would only be interested in how much you are able to befriend people who have less than you. Your clothes would mean absolutely nothing to me.
I love that idea, you’re awesome 😂
you seem like a cool dude
Our clothing choices reflect not only our currect self but what we strive to be, a mixture of traits that are congruent to the current self yet foreshadow our development and progress as human being . How can u show how elevated and above the frail you're ,how your mere existence on the physical plane is nothing more then a role of self-amusement in just a few piece of clothing .One must choose very wisely as such an issue is of grand importance of our selfimage and legacy.
Superb!
Areté wow, I think you put more effort in writing this comment than people are putting in their style. 😃
It was beautiful *tear drops
Areté no its not it's what we wear
I feel like y’all are putting way too much importance into clothes… or this is just a shitpost and I’ve been had lol
thank you for putting it so well!! it's not about being vain, it's about controlling other people's immediate perceptions and sculpting our own identity
A good indicator is the extent to which a person rejects socially accepted fashion. A teenager wearing exclusively Nike or Adidas, to me suggests conformity, and a sense of self consciousness and/or fear of not fitting in. We see this in all age groups; it's generational adherence. Those who reject this are the ones most comfortable with their own bodies and minds.
i deliberately don't dress like everyone else in my school but i'm super fucking self concious.
And the ones who reject trends that don't necessarily look bad and make it known to everybody that they "hate" it are pretentious attention-seekers
I don’t follow trends just because I like the more timeless style. I’m still afraid of not fitting in.
I have a pretty conventional style, but I’m very comfortable with myself. However I also don’t follow trends or anything unless I genuinely like it myself.
I don't like the trending stuff so I go with what i like.
😊😊😊
this channel is such a refuge.
Michelle omg I do the exact same thing 😂😂
Mariana Are you 5.5 and 75kg ?No? Than there's no point of trying to loose weight .
Mariana if you aren't confident then try to be confident for just 1 day and see what happens.
I love it.
As always, these videos perfectly translate abstract ideas that we all think but cannot articulate to words.
I wear the same thing everyday. Very meaningful. It says it doesn't really matter what I wear, as long as I don't look like an idiot.
Yo, the person brushing a sleeve onto herself was the most satisfying thing I’ve seen all week.
As much as I love this video, it's important to remember that brands don't matter if you think they don't, and that anything you wear looks great *_if you think it does_*. Clothes are a great way to share yourself, but they're not the only way.
My clothing says, "I'm confident and have my life together," when in reality, I'm a complete mess and have nothing figured out.
I AM ADDICTED TO THE SCHOOL OF LIFE. I love it. All of it. The Curriculum and all the other films. Since discovering you guys I have become a daily listener. As a writer, I've found the animations and the films and subjects so brilliant and often give me prompts for my writing. THANK YOU

How does it work? This might mean you like simplicity and you are more interested in how things work - surprise - rather than how they look.
Elif you might just be right..
As in communication theory - you cannot not communicate.
Segor97 well that depends who I'm communicating with ..
The color nuances, the textures and the fit of this, as simple as it sounds, can change everything
Reality about appearance
10% what you wear
90% how you carry that on you
i agree
Sure. But first you need confidence and clothes can bring you that inner confidence
Chet Kroon thank you
Judging people on the content of their character is great, but it takes a lot of time while clothes give you an overview of who the person is, or at least want to be seen as
And if you want ethical cheap clothes you can always go to trift shops, I get most of my clothes there and I often find great clothes amongst the meh clothes, it feels like treasure hunting
Chet Kroon: That sounds nightmarish. I love putting together an outfit and altering my clothes to make them represent myself more. You have no creativity...
No matter how one don’t want to be perceived as materialistic, this video speaks volume.
I love thrift shopping and wearing vintage Tees or vintage things from the 90’s. I’m short and some of these things make me look even shorter and don’t compliment my height, but I feel happy with what I wear.
Thank you School of Life for teaching me what my parents cannot!
I wear all black
Black/grey/white
Grey, black, blue, orange, and red is my overall main color scheme.
that's not good. it's easier to get hit by a car at night. people should wear bright colours at night to steer clear of accidents

Never considered that viewpoint. Thanks!
This made me feel anxious for some reason.
Do you have some underlying issues/trauma with clothing and/or clothing choice?
I've only ever worn, plain tee's/graphic tee's , track pants/jeans, trainers/skateshoes, generally black, I hadn't put much thought into it throughout my life, but this video got me thinking what it says about me... hmm
2 cups of coffee later...me too
Don't worry. Clothes and first impressions are shit. I literally know tons of people who don't give two hoots about what they look like but are the most interesting people I've ever met.

Why Mirrors Matter
Hey guys
As I was watching this video with my fellow student of life, we started digging a little deeper.
Love from Antwerp
Marius & Thomas
Thank you for the point of wiew it’s absolutely right!
Fashion is creative communication, which is to say - ART! :)
Used clothing
Recycling can do wonders for your budget!
thank you for helping me understand why even getting dressed can cause me anxiety. no one else with anxiety I've spoken to has had the same experience and I thought I was just being ridiculous. now I understand myself better
As long as you feel happy in your style of dress and your clothes are clean wear whatever you like
Your clothes is a strong reflection, of your state of mind and a image of self love or hate
The majority of my clothes are from older relatives who are grown ahahah
My clothes tells i am poor ahah
2 MILLION subscribers!!! This is amazing! Congrats!!
Too much people care about what to wear and do not worry about what they doing.
Why clothes don’t matter: it’s about the ENERGY of the individual WEARING the clothes ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Such creativity in the animation. Well done ye!
The outside is a reflection of the inside. There might be a few exceptions to this but it's mostly true.
Never thought of clothes as an effective mean of communication. Thanks for the idea!!
I always wondered why ppl misunderstood my personality
i'm addicted to his voice.
This resonates so much with me as someone who's only recently taking their fashion seriously; thank you.
I honestly don't judge what a person wears but if I see where they're coming from with an outfit, I notice and evaluate.
My clothes say I'm broke and haven't bought a new outfit since high school.
My advice would be to get yourself a tailor. Tailoring the clothes I already own was life changing.
i hate when people judge cause my clothes aren't from a recognized store or something...... i just want something i fell comfortable i dont care about where it come fron or who nade it...
Eduardo yea especially when sheeps think because they have designer clothes that you rank lower than them.
+Aunt Jemima Sheep-minded folks suck
as long as you have your own style that you like I don't think brands matter.
no one impresses me by just following trends and buying whats in store.
I can relate but you do actually need to know where your clothes come from. You know, to avoid supporting child labor and stuff.
I feel like clothing is a topic that is often overlooked quite a lot. I wish people my age especially would take more time to consider what they wear
"Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy."
_-Albert Einstein_
Ever since I first heard that, I've had the same simple and somewhat fitting clothing as my wardobe.
They are generally judged regardless of what they wear., people assume that the choice of clothing is their actions.
I dress like grunge trash. I once bought a leather jacket believing that it would instantly improve my life.
I was 100% correct (sorry, vegetarians).
pleather jackets have the same effect ;)
Quantum Leap You are a dark soul. Wtf that is not true or a normal train of thought for most people.

You’re fucking wild. People like leather because it’s good quality and most forget that an animal was killed to get that leather item. Nobody buys it to bring them satisfaction that an animal was killed to
Make that item. That’s just you, bud
I love the way this video has been put together! Complex pastiche yet deeply accessible 👌🏻 (+ beautiful aesthetic balance too!)
I do not understand people who want to keep everything simple. I want everything to look nice. I find this a logical thing to do. People often say things are beautiful when they see them on pictures, photos and movies. Yet in reality they never do anything to make their surrounding to look like a picture.
Thank you for the enlightening videos! Use them a lot in class, my students love you!
My shoes are not Converse or Adidas either, The thing is I'm not trying to stand out, everyone is so similar here, that a pair of boots or a blank colored t-shit or a sweater even, just blows their minds.
it always impresses people when i take a T-shit
Sad.
You judge a lot
It's so interesting how differently people look at you and judge you, solely by the different styles of clothing you wear
I wish I could dress completely neutral :(
black jeans navy top white shoes
regular jeans grey top black shoes
Quasiker boring
Loser
Clothing is one of my favorite things !
This video actually mean," Everything matter", We just need to know our priorities.Work with it.
Wow! This is why a Bpder in my life gets very anxious and "splits" with any delays clothes shopping, or any deviation from her "perfect" fashion choice. I cottoned on a delay was not helpful, now I know more. Every little helps. Thanks
I always feel like wearing heavy boots to make me look stronger and more powerful
What a wonderful ode to clothes :)
YOU'RE NOT HELPING ME WITH MY SHOPPING ADDICTION!
His voice is everything.
You can choose whatever you want to wear and it still reflects what you are. The only pressure is the pressure you put on yourself.
I was scrolling the comments trying to find someone who also has this thought. Thank you
Should have gotten dressed before watching this... Now what to wear has become a real tough question!
Ikr. My college classmate was judging me by the way I dress with his eyes signalling his friend like this😒🙄🙂.
So much work has gone into this! Well done to all involved 🙌🙌🙌
Could you do a video on why people get tattoos and what do they mean and represent? :)
I love the ideas, AND the graphics! They complete each other in the perfect way.
I guess there are rich people on both sides. But definitely not "most". I could actually argue is the other way around but hey :)
So true!! I meet women all the time who look like they haven't showered in weeks but they pull out a black card to buy their stuff. You cannot judge a book by the cover.
This was so pleasurable to watch
my clothes would portray my personality so much better if i didn't have a budget issue.
fashion absolutely overwhelms me and stresses me out. i feel like that i have to have my own style but still follow the trends. when i wear my unique pieces of clothing i feel confident but sometimes I feel like I have too many of those pieces and i feel left behind when i don't follow the trends (which some of them i do like by the way). and i feel like i am lacking something and feeling insufficient in my wardrobe when i don't have these trendy pieces and i feel like i always end up spending too much money on clothes because i purchase the trendy pieces when I already have plenty in my closet. even though i know that i have more than enough, i still feel like i am not 'pretty' enough or 'cool enough' when i don't have a particular item that is in style (e.g. a pair of duck boots or something of a certain color -- i have a bit of an obsession of rose gold and i own nothing of that color because i was obsessed with gray a few months ago). i feel that my wardrobe is incomplete, that i am incomplete. i have pretty high standards for myself and it is hard for me to keep up with and meet my goal of being fashionable and aesthetically pleasing while still having my own twist in my style.
Does that mean, that the younger generation which has started to wear very similar clothes all in all is trying to disguise their lack of self-being, because they are not particularly good at anything, or at least they think so/ havent discovered it yet. Lets discuss that...
This explains why when I stopped caring what others thought of me, I literally have zero desire to buy clothes or even to think about what to wear.
