Folder-week? Absolutely! Holga-paradox: the worlds smallest box of concentrated, multiple issues, but often unexpected great results! The cheapest way to confirm that it's not the gear what makes the difference, but the photographer. How to double the value of a Holga? Loading a roll of Fomapan 100. 😊
Hi Roger, I have been watching your videos for awhile and never commented before, but I felt like I had to today. I have a Holga 120N and I love it. Light leaks, soft focus, multiple exposures are all just some of the things that make it fun. That's what photography is supposed to be. I have been known to mount my Holga 120N onto a Manfrotto travel tripod and the cost of the tripod would pay for four Holgas! I ven went to the extra option of buying a Holga 60mm lens with a Canon EF mount and added it to a Canon APS-C camera. No light leaks on a digital camera, but everything else was the same. Expired film is always interesting on a Holga 120N because you never know how the film is going to act. Keep up the great, inspiring work fella!
I took basic black and white photography in 2000 at my local jr. college. Even though I've been doing black and white photography since 1980, I took classes because I've never had formal training. I got lucky and had for my instructor Annette Fournet. She took her photos with just a Diana camera. A toy camera from the 60s, which is like a Holga. Bad lens, light leaks, all plastic. So, in time, our class went out and bought Diana and Holga cameras. Fun cameras no doubt.
I guess by Annette using just a Diana camera just went to show the class that it wasn't all about gear and more about chasing the light and subjects. A great idea for teaching black and white photography!
I have three Holgas (GCFN, Holga 120 Pan and the 135 BC). The GCFN is great, especially with Foma or Kentmere 400 and multiple exposures. I didn't have much luck with the PAN and the 135 BC was dead on arrival (defective film transport). I also have a Diana F+ which is also fun to use.
To answer the question, I've not jumped into the Holga bandwagon. That said, good photographs are good photographs, especially when they take advantage of the inherent characteristics of the equipment used. That's just a wordy way of saying "Cool!" I've been happy with results from a variety of Brownies. Folding cameras give great results too, and are available in bigger than 6x6. Thanks for another fun video!
I love Holga photography, I have a love/hate relationship withy camera thought. I hate it being so unpredictable, and yet love it, when a photo or two come out magical
I've just dug mine out and had a bash with it today for #holgaweek. 😂 You make some great images with your holga. I've tried and tried and tried again with a Holga. I've never had an image that l've liked. I know for a fact that today I’ve double exposed a shot too. I'm deving the film tonight - fingers crossed. Also, I like the vignette tip with the circular dodge too. Great tip.
Yep, I could walk around with thousands of pounds of top quality cameras and lenses in my bag and the pictures I end up liking the most come from the plastic fantastic Holga. Go figure! Folders Week sounds great!!
I just added a 3rd holga to my collection (135BC). One of my most memorable photos is shot with my Holga 120s and Cinestill 400 D. Soft and ethereal; it really takes me back to the place and time that I shot it.
One of your videos convinced me to buy a Holga last year and it's so much fun. There are 3D printed shutter cable release adapters available for cheap, which I use in bulb mode so I can actually control the shutter speed. Love taking the Holga along with me with my Nikon on long exposure nights, getting alternate versions of similar compositions with the Holga, which have a mood of its own, which sometimes is preferable. End results in B&W almost look like an old silent film.
The holga has a certain charm that's for sure. But it's a great test for your composition skill. There are a load of Holga groups over on flickr, some fantastic, atmospheric pictures on there.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss oh yes, sometimes I just go with the 6x12 but sometimes I just take the middle of the frame. I really like 6x9 and wish there was a 6x9 Holga :-)
Thanks Erich. There are plenty of boats here moored up. Mostly it's all "private" club member pontoons with "Private" signs if you want to get close. But I'm sure no one minds a bit of trespassing for a photo! I'm enjoying the boats lately.
Found your channel after picking up the Holga book for £1 in a used bookshop and being fascinated, and now have one on its way this week with a few rolls of film. Haven't shot film for >20 years but have always wished I could develop and print my own pictures after watching my dad do it in his loft darkroom in the 80's! Maybe the Holga will be the start of at least developing some negs and I also dug out my old Canon EOS 500N from a box in the cupboard and discovered it had a new unexposed roll of XP4 in there from 20 years ago 🤣
Don’t have a Holga, but at todays high film prices my favorite camera is my home made 4X5 shooting B&W paper negatives and sporting a 100mm f8.8 triplet from an old Kodak Tourist folder. Camera, 6 film holders, and my compact tripod are trivial to carry and the slow, sometimes several second exposures and slow pace to expose 12 frames is fun, and the darkroom work to develop and contact print can all be done under a red safelight.
Hey, there was one image shot on the Delta 400 of a boat moored, it was a very low key looking image for ASA 400. You didn't do a featured print of it just a digital scan. How did you manage too get such a low key photograph with only one shutter speed and two apertures? Did you perhaps use a ND filter over the lens? Compared to the other images, it was noticeably darker. That one's my favorite! Cheers
I know the one you mean. At that point I knew it was a gamble as the light wasn't great in that area. The video showed it as better light as it was on Auto and boosted the light. I used f8 on that shot. It turned out nice.
Folder Week, what a cracking idea, they're awesome things. I have a few, and just this week fixed a Voigtlander Bessa 1, which now has film in it, if only it would stop raining.....
That sounds familiar - I always admire other photographers rain photos and promise myself that I'll shoot some of my own as soon as I get the chance.........then complain bitterly every time it rains!!!
really like my holga as you say it is what it is i use kentmere 400 in it and have got some good shots i think the best bit is your outdoors walking around looking for shots to take a lot better then sitting in front of the tv or computer.
As much as I enjoyed this video, the lovely images are only a testament of Roger's talent. I really don't get the idea of Holgas. 😞 Roger inspired me to try cheap folding cameras and I ended up shooting quite a lot with an Ikonta I picked up for 30 Euros. This camera performs like it is nobody's business and at the same price of a Holga. But I still like, that Holgas have such a following because it is something different. And since we film shooters are kind of crazy anyway, more power to them. Greetings from Austria!
Thanks Robert. In short every time I shoot the Holga I know the negs will be something different to any other camera and if I get a good neg worth printing I add it to my Holga print collection. Same with pinhole too! I kind of see both of those cameras in the same bowl. You never know what you're going to get. Nice to read you're enjoying the folders!
I have a couple Holgas and a few other types of Plastic Craptastic cameras. They are quite fun. If Michael Kenna can have books and gallery shows of his Holga images then they are ok by me too.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Don't know how it happened 🤣 a lot of them are old like me and need repairing some I have fixed. it is amazing how many you collet over the years
I used an Holga exclusively for a period of time with a +10 close up filter attached. The results where quite impressive. Since then I have had several versions of the 120 N model but non have been as reliable as my original unit. I believe the the original manufacturer end production some time ago and the current versions manufactured by other companies (such as SunRise) which may account for this. I also have the the 6x12 version but have never had the same success with this version as my original model. Great video as always... 😊
I’ve got a few Holga and “Holga-like” cameras, with my favorite being a Diana. I never paid more than $5 USD for any of them. Two were just included in the boxes with other eBay purchases years ago. Personally, I think they’re often the best to use with long expired film. I always expect the worst results when I use a little plastic box with a plastic lens. I haven’t had my darkroom or enlarger set up for a couple of decades now, so I don’t make any prints.. yet.
I have never enjoyed shooting a Holga. But I know photographers that do and they made same great photos. Some better than I have made with more able cameras. Most importantly if you have fun then that is super!
I have a Holga 120N. It has no light leaks-the only things I tape are the clips that hold on the back. The one thing I really do have problems with is loading the film. It is just so tight trying to get the thing in and out of the camera. But I find that every film has a shot that thrills me, that I couldn’t have got with any of my other cameras.
I have looked at Holgas and even been tempted but never given in. My reason - I have old box cameras that do much the same job but without the focussing or the choice of exposures. I guess that they give me much the same pleasure I would get out of a Holga (except perhaps the pinhole version) without the light leaks.
Hi Roger. Great video, as always. I have two Holga 120S and a 120N. i prefer the pictures I get from the 120S cameras. I think the aperture is smaller. I sold a Holgamods 120N from Randy because I didn't like the B-N rod slipping in and out. Also sold on with the flash. It felt too heavy and need batteries. Dianas are ok but there are more controls to fiddle with. I've made some nice pictures with the FPP Debonair. The lens would seem to be the same as on a Holga, but there are only three distance icons. Of course it is only 6x4.5 and vertical orientation.
There is a company in Hong Kong called "Holgon" They modify the 120N with shutter speeds. That is interesting as you can get more creative. On the other hand it kind of takes away what Holga is. Still fun though.
Some of my favorite photos I've taken have been with a Holga, but I think the secret is to use good film. I tried some Lomography something or other and the pictures were garbage, but with Delta 100 they look SO much better. The better film stock allows the quirks of the camera to come out.
I should clarify. I'm not saying Lomo's film is no good, I'm just saying that some of their stocks are deliberately low-fi, and using them in a Holga or something similar compounds that. If that's what you're looking for, great, but it wasn't for me.
For a regular shooting, I use Foma 400 and for infrared I use CatLABS 320Pro. They are great films and even better have very easy numbers to see on the backing paper. I have Leicas and a Hasselblad, but if I only could take one camera with me, it would be a Holga.
Roger awesome ,,, thank you for following through to final print..with a nail biting finish to the final print was thinking other five seconds to the sky or another ten .. was going to nominate The Great Wall ..but thats old hat now ..and yes I do have a couple of folders ..was wondering if you did a shot at f11 to see if vignette reduced ..cheers
I shoot my Holga about once a year. It's ok. I don't hate it but I don't love it. It's certainly a camera that I go out with when I don't really care if I get a usable image at the end of the day. I say that because sometime my shutter sticks open and other times it doesn't even open. Both are due to a crap shutter button that has a mind of its own. I have made a few photos with it that I really like, but they are few and far between.
Great video as usual. Thanks for that. I bought a Holga 120N ten years ago and I dig it but I don't shoot with it very often. Inspired by Holga Week, I loaded it up with Fomapan 100 last Thursday and went about running errands. Developed the film in Rodinal 1+50 and it turned out pretty marvelous.
A holga is as technologically advanced as a showel, but it is also a fantastic tool for the creative photographer, which sadly excludes me. If you don't believe me, ask Micheal Kenna. Happy Holga week mate.
I'm a real can of the holga, usually have one in the car and one in the bag. Nothing is cheaper. Never bothered to much about the leaks. I always tape over the clips, so not to have the back call off mix role. I quite like the diana, but it's a bit less robust in its construction. Although it does give more options, like pinhole. Holgas are ripe for experimentation, like putting 35 mms through them, or glueing things in front of the film, like micro soldier's. I never pay more than £35 for them. Avoid the flash editions and the so called limited edition.
Thanks Andrew! I have a mount for my DSLR and M42 Screw fit lenses. None of which are as quirky as a Holga but fun to shoot. In video mode some of them are awesome! Especially a Chinon 135mm f2.8. In strong light at night I get fantastic flares.
I have a lot of versions of it (looking for a last one I can't find...) and I absolutely love them! Surprisingly, none of them have lightleaks, but with Holga, you know everything can happen. It is clearly not for everyone. The one I use the most has a very blurry lens, except for the every center, so I know how I have to compose my shots to take advantage of that.
Try and get yourself a Brownie Six 20 Flash model. Its all metal and shoots huge I think 6x9 images lol. After a service and cleaning there was zero light leaks (probably because its metal) and its got that same kind of low fi vintage look but in a much better enclosure and larger negs :).
I prefer a Kodak Cresta... quality made in the UK 60 plus years ago, and just as good as ever. I've had a Holga, just to see if the hype was true. Sorry, it's just hype. Try a Cresta! I think you will be a fan.
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Dianas the original toy camera in the 60s- Diana F and the Diana 151. Then Lomography found out about them and produced the Diana F+ and all the other iterations- 35mm, Diana Instax etc
Nice video. Everybody tells me how cheap this camera is, but film and development cost money too. That's the problem here. I like the Holga look though.
The GCFN has a glass lens so you can get some pretty decent shots. I had one and shot a good bit with it. Even with a glass lens though the results just aren't consistent enough to justify the cost of film and developing these days. I ended up getting a Sony mirrorless so I could afford to take a bunch of bad photos so I could improve my skills.
Someone else had a cure for wasting expensive film in a Holga. Shoot a cheap film! Made me chuckle. Yes I also took a digital camera with me for a few shots that afternoon. I think I took about 6 photos on it!
Yes, I own a HOLGA. Yes, the images are soft and the most needed assessory is tape. However, I'm curious to see what this crappy camera does with my images. 🙂
Always shoot with what is fun to shoot with. The Holga is not really my thing, I prefer to shoot with old janky soviet cameras when I want to go low tech. I do love some of the stuff people have managed to get a Holga to capture, I do see why people like it.
Hm yes. I wouldn't get a Holga 120. But I do have a Holga tlr 135. It's the mood. The blurry edges and vignetting feels like you're in a fleeting dream. Also I bring it to the sea spray and in the rain. I won't do that with my OM1.
I suppose it's about charm; there's plenty of really "so bad it's good" media for example. There are plenty of worse cameras out there that are just frustrating to use without a cult following.

For a regular shooting, I use Foma 400 and for infrared I use CatLABS 320Pro. They are great films and even better have very easy numbers to see on the backing paper. I have Leicas and a Hasselblad, but if I only could take one camera with me, it would be a Holga.
I’ve a roll of 35mm film in my 120N at the moment. The results will be interesting! 😅
With a 35mm attachment! Nice. I have those but not used it yet. Hope they look funky!
Call me crazy, but I love those images. I have one, but I haven't used it yet.
Stick some film in it! Enjoy!
I’m all for box camera week one shutter speed + B and no more than two aperture options.
I shoot Hasselblad, Yashica, Linhof, Graflex, the lot. But the camera I shoot most is my Holga.
Amazing! Why do you shoot that the most?
5:02 personal ethos: when in doubt, just shoot again. I’d rather have a potentially interesting double exposure than an unused frame.
I never thought of that Nick! If the aperture changes the vignette. Most of them were vignette though and I shot a few at f8.
Nice!! It's nice someone came out with the idea. Gives some a reason to get it out and shoot
Never had a Holga but I also use electrical tape on some of my vintage cameras just in case. Light seals not so good on a couple of them 🙄 👍📸
A holga is as technologically advanced as a showel, but it is also a fantastic tool for the creative photographer, which sadly excludes me. If you don't believe me, ask Micheal Kenna. Happy Holga week mate.
I've learned Michael Kenna takes one out with him every time. I will have to check him out!
I shot advertising ads on a Holga. I keep one in the camera case next to my Hasselblad cameras. Seriously.
Got mine for a tenner 😂
Result!
Try and get yourself a Brownie Six 20 Flash model. Its all metal and shoots huge I think 6x9 images lol. After a service and cleaning there was zero light leaks (probably because its metal) and its got that same kind of low fi vintage look but in a much better enclosure and larger negs :).
The prints look good! But my money would be on the lc120 for “cheap” “new” 120 camera
I have a Holga, why not?
I prefer a Kodak Cresta... quality made in the UK 60 plus years ago, and just as good as ever. I've had a Holga, just to see if the hype was true. Sorry, it's just hype. Try a Cresta! I think you will be a fan.
You have actual apertures? Mine has the switch but neither has an actual aperture stop in in. Maybe I'll 3D print one for it.
Hi Roger, You recommend holga 120N (basic Model) or 120 Other models? I see You shooting 120N On RUclips.
I have Holgas and Dianas- prefer the Dianas😂 I want a Diana week
me too Diana
I've never seen one!
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss Dianas the original toy camera in the 60s- Diana F and the Diana 151. Then Lomography found out about them and produced the Diana F+ and all the other iterations- 35mm, Diana Instax etc
@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss I got one recently at a flea market. It's tiny but best aperture is f/11
Great stuff! And sign me up for folder week.
It has to be done. I can't see a Folder week anywhere.
I’m using my 120WPC, botched the first roll by having the wrong red window selected… oops I’m all for a folder week 😊
Easy mistake! Tip. Tape it up inside, the one you don't use. I have done mine (Forgot to mention it)
Oh shit Roger, you make me want to go out and shoot my holga 🤣🤣🤣
Cheers mate 👍😅
i'I think Roger is ambassador for Holga cameras
ha ha go on Peds!
Yes, I own a HOLGA. Yes, the images are soft and the most needed assessory is tape. However, I'm curious to see what this crappy camera does with my images. 🙂
I use 1/4” black chartpak tape from Amazon works fantastic
I think thats the beauty of it. You never know if it will deliver something great or something bad.
Great video Roger. I shoot some of my fine art nudes on a Holga 120N. Get some great results!
I know you do mate. You should get a book out of your Holga nudes. Great work as always 👍
Always shoot with what is fun to shoot with. The Holga is not really my thing, I prefer to shoot with old janky soviet cameras when I want to go low tech. I do love some of the stuff people have managed to get a Holga to capture, I do see why people like it.
I would hesitate wasting expensive film on that thing.
Then waste some cheap film
Brilliant! 😂
I don't use it enough but I have some very nice prints from it.
"Holga" sounds like the name for a mean middle school teacher who picks on you for no real reason
The Holga is funn, the price of a roll of film is not...
True!
I own a Holga and like the results I get but don't use it as much a I will like to
I like my Holga....its basic
Holga👍
Strange how something so bad could be so popular.
It's the lo-fi aesthetic- just shoot and don't worry about a thing😂
Hm yes. I wouldn't get a Holga 120. But I do have a Holga tlr 135. It's the mood. The blurry edges and vignetting feels like you're in a fleeting dream.
Also I bring it to the sea spray and in the rain. I won't do that with my OM1.
There is a lot of expensive crap really popular..
I suppose it's about charm; there's plenty of really "so bad it's good" media for example. There are plenty of worse cameras out there that are just frustrating to use without a cult following.
I've never tried a 35mm Holga, nice one!
I have a Holga, she’s my girlfriend, lol
...that's Helga
@@largophoto says Holga on her birth certificate 🙂
@@HaakonOdinsson ..ah you have a real Holga 😎 ..way prettier than the camera ...
@@largophoto yes she is prettier, more expensive and she doesn’t require tape for any leaks 😂
@@largophoto that came out a bit wrong, sorry
